After a few days of not drinking, it seems about the right time to put down some random Brooklyn memories: -
1 frozen margarita. By the pint. 2 spilling drinks on a random guy - I was carrying 4 pints in each hand. An apology and a beer later - we are famous friends. 3 Said guy turning out be a Professor and his partner also Professor. Explained that i had never met 2 professors within the same hour. Those 2 professors are coming to London in March. 4 Champagne - from a can, at Lake St. I did not inspect the label, but it was clearly not Vintage Dom Perignon. 5 Meeting Rob Sheffield for the first time - what an absolute star. Managed not to say," You are really tall" as I'm sure he is sick of being told something he has known for many years. 6. Talking to Frank Turner at Lake St. Also very tall. 7. Thanking Frank Turner for insisting that on the tourbus when Franz supported FT, they watch the box set of Shooting Stars. Still love the fact that Franz was mystified about the whole Shooting Stars thing. 8 Making a snow angel in the confetti on the stage after all the bands gear had been removed on the Saturday night. I could see the outline in one of Rich's photos on these boards. 9. almost everyone seemed to know almost every word to every song. 10. the quality of the openers. 11. the amount of hipsters in Williamsburg - as an English person looking the wrong way when crossing the road, nearly being wiped out by middle aged men on skateboards in the road. 12 Mosh Pit Josh refusing a beer from me (he took it in the end). Mosh Pit Josh in fine form on stage. 13 Camie's confetti. 14 watching the Vikings win at Atlanta - they look like the real deal. (though I have been warned that they are likely impostors, so as to help manage my expectations). 15 the kindness, honestly and friendliness of everyone I met. 16 As I've said before it is a total honour and a pleasure to travel so far from home, yet be made so welcome and to thus feel so much at home. 17 the band were on fire throughout. Can' t help agree with CF saying that this is the best line-up ever. Clearly they have the best material avaialable too. 18 Banging Camp to open a show. 19 the OP holding a lighter aloft during Discouraged. Not old, just old school.

As ever, Craig nails it on his facebook post:-
It’s a wrap! Actually, we finished Saturday night but I’m still licking my wounds a bit….. Massive Nights was an incredible success. We couldn’t be happier with how it went. People came from all over the world to take part in four of the best Hold Steady shows ever. I met a ton of cool people and we were honored by the support and connection. Each night the room felt electric, and each night seemed to ramp up just a little bit. My head is still swirling, but I’ll try to walk through it all to the best of my memory. First off, a week ago we dropped two new songs, our first new music in quite a while. “Entitlement Crew” and “A Snake In The Shower” were a surprise to the fans and were only recorded a few weeks earlier. It was fun to turn something around so quickly. Also, it gave us two new songs to play each night, which felt cool. We also had a beer just for the event from Hanging Hills Brewing Company, the Massive Nights IPA. It got a lot of compliments from people I talked to who had tried it. IPAs aren’t perfect show beers for a singer, so I’ll have to catch up this week as I know they are serving it at Lake Street in Greenpoint. While we were making the set lists for the shows I came upon an idea: if we play 21 songs (a bit longer than normal) and then a four song encore (again, a bit longer), then we will play 25 songs a night for four nights= 100 songs over all the shows. It felt like a nice round number and a good goal…. Wednesday night we kicked things off with our friend Patterson Hood, who turned in a killer set and joined us for an AC/DC cover “Ride On”. One of my favorite things was when a good part of the crowd was chanting “D B T! -D B T!” which underscored the relationship we have with the Drive By Truckers. DBT was truly a big influence on the early THS long before we had met them, so to have Patterson open this up (and count him as a good friend) was really special. The show went perfect, we opened with “Positive Jam”, gotta start it the only way we know how... And of course the set featured the live debut of “Entitlement” and “Snake”. Thursday we were treated to a performance by Cayetana who made big fans out of the THS guys as well as the crowd. They were so good! I’ve been listening to their record “New Kind of Normal” non-stop in last few weeks and I suggest you do the same. We had another great set and threw “History Lesson Pt. II” by the Minutemen into the encore. I really like that song in that it speaks to their own legend in a cool way, and how bands take what they look up to, combine it with what they know, and go forth to put that out into the world. It always gives me chills a bit to hear it, and it’s inclusion at the end of the show is meant to remind us of that phenomenon. Friday brought in The Whigs, our old friends and tour mates, doing their ONLY show of 2017. I was wondering if they would be out of practice but they were every bit as tight as they ever are. PLUS they played all our favorite songs including my favorite “Right Hand on My Heart”. It was glorious. And not lost on us what it means that they did this for their only show this year. Love those guys. Our show was again really great, it felt like the weekend had arrived as people seemed to be in party mode. No covers but another 25 songs that flew by and a great audience. On Saturday afternoon, the cat got let out of the bag. Frank Turner was the final night surprise opener. Frank flew FROM LONDON TO NYC AND BACK in about as little time as possible just to do the show. He is a hero for doing so, and also for turning in a set that can only be described as transcendent. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one guy with an acoustic guitar grab the audience by the throat like that. I can’t thank him enough for his contribution to the final Massive Night. And being kind of a tall guy, it was fun to look out at the crowd and see him out there amongst all the people singing along during our set. Saturday night felt like a culmination, we started with “Stuck Between Stations” and blazed through the set. Somewhere in there Frank joined us for Constructive, which was awesome. And of course our friend Mosh Pit Josh came out and destroyed “Stay Positive’ with us for the encore. Eventually we got to “Killer Parties” one more time - the 100th song of the weekend. Right now, I can barely talk. My body aches. These four shows took a lot out of me, and I’m sure all of us. But I’ve never felt so good as I did at Massive Nights this year. I said it every night- this six piece lineup of THS is the best lineup we’ve ever had and it’s an honor to stand onstage with my bandmates. The good people at the Brooklyn Bowl worked tirelessly with us all year to put this together and were fantastic hosts again. But mostly, it’s so amazing to see the community that has sprung up in the audience, something that continues to be awe inspiring. I am so proud to be a part of this. And I’m so glad you are a part of it as well. We couldn’t have ever done this if it wasn’t for you. In short, THAT WAS MASSIVE. So…..let’s do it again next year? Thanks for listening! Thanks for understanding! Stay Positive! cf THE HOLD STEADY

Rich - superb photos as ever.
Great to see you and everyone.
Amazing experiences to see the band on fire as usual.
Still not fully recovered even though safely back in England.

Totally awesome news.
Clearly, in for both nights.
Matt - I share your paranoia about pre sale codes, not least as i have changed my emails a few times.
Going to see if I can persuade Ben g to come down too.

Sadly, I have to confirm that no one has asked me if the band can come play at my house again. (although the answer will always be yes of course).
I think rich' is as on the money as ever when setting out the tough economics of the music business.
Only consolation - as Sterling is managing to put up a fight against the Dollar, it may ease the financial pain (a tiny bit) of travelling to the States to see what will doubtless be some special stuff.

This is of course a wonderful thing.
Very, very exciting to think that there will be the prospect of more THS gigs - still nothing quite like them live.
Will be great to see everyone out again.

Craig played for about 75 minutes and there was a real mix of stuff including: · Mission Viejo – from his lifter puller days. Craig said that it was one of his favourite lifter puller songs; · Modesto – sounded lovely on acoustic guitar; · Certain Songs – for me that was the high point of the night; A brand new song (which Craig was actually changing as he was playing it) by way of encore. That was called, “Dark Days for a Cocksman” which tells a story about David Coverdale being stuck in a hotel at the airport in Minneapolis. It came directly from a conversation which Craig had with Michael Hann of The Guardian and writing the attached article: www.theguardian.com/music/2015/apr/22/david-coverdale-whitesnake-the-purple-album-deep-purple Craig had loads of chat and banter in between songs. He made a lot of reference about the fact that his new album contains references to lots of woman’s names. He said that the woman in, “Christine” is perhaps one step too reckless whilst the narrator is probably one step too careful. He said that makes for a nice mix.

NYE for me too. Brilliant shows as ever on 30 and 31 Dec. Loved that confetti cannon on NYE - particualrly when the shout was "Reload". Loved Camie's confetti too (and Camie herself).
Has to be said that the SoSo Glos are a wonderful band (and people).
A great highlight was the February 2014 double header at MHOW (longest set I've ever seen them play) and the incredible scene people for the Jersey mike gig in h'burg - truly epic and so glad someone recorded it.
PS - still trying to claim last confetti (from H'burg - still stuck to my boots - beer appears to from a potent glue if you let the confetti dry out).

Dear all,
Me again with further apologies.
Whilst I had been very busy with family, work and other stuff (including a great gig or two) I had hit a roadblock in terms of sourcing the shirt design (unsure who had the copyright).
Anyway, the usual great people from these boards have come to my aid. I'm thus hopeful we can move this forward.
Thank you for your continued patience - I still have all your details and this will be sorted..
Very best,
H

Dear all,
Humble apologies as work has completely overtaken me these last few weeks and I've not had time to chase through an alternative supplier for the shirts nor send the designs to them.
I'll only start this next week, bu rest assured I will sort it.
Best
Howard

Golly - a couple of SosoGlo gigs (and several beers) plus a heavy workload and it looks like I've missed some stuff on this thread.
I wanted to do something positive, given the usual great times that the band brought to the UK (and Paris) where I was privileged to see them recently. You only have to read the PMs I've received to know that this is a positive thing - your kind words in those PMs have made me smile and be proud in equal measure.
I'll do the round of shirts as I said; I'll revisit my list and will email once I know timescales and to confirm order, number, etc.
There is a small problem at present caused by the online t-shirt company ignoring my emails. It looks like I'll have to find another supplier (which may be a nuisance and cause a delay, whilst I get the images to them, explain what is required, etc). I'm also off to Minneapolis this weekend - to see the vikngs - so may not make much progress until I'm back next Wednesday.
And then I'll be booking flights to NYC for NYE...

The link took me to a fan club page then onto ticket-master which is telling me that pre-sale starts in a few hours.
Is this a UK glitch I wonder?
Any constructive suggestions gratefully received.
Re Edit - I've now see n the clock on the ticket master ticking down to the American Express pre-sale tomorrow.
Looks like the Bash tickets are indeed sold out and GA only remain.
I can't find the link to the NYE show on the band's web-site only for Horseshoe tavern (which does not work in tandem with a Vikes game)

Of course, some people from the UK will be there - I can think of at least 3 UK Scenesters going off the top of my head.
(Unsure about taking a cake across the Atlantic for Galen though)

Dear all,
That did not take long - this round is now full and my list closed.
Surprising how many lurkers and newbies there are on and adjacent to these boards, but all most welcome.
I still need an email address for Stringer, and the others requested in my last post, but do now have one for Nelg.
I've emailed the online store for prices, logistics, etc - suspect I'll have a reply in the next couple of days. I'd then hope to put a timescale on this.
I then intend to send an email to everyone who is on my list - apologies that I can't PM you all now, but violent red visions was the last one and everyone above that in this thread should be included.
More than a few of you have not gone to the Wiki and chosen an available number, nor given a size. My email to you all will have a reminder to do that - please can I also suggest you take the time to read the US wiki link above in full.
More, by email, this week.

Dear all,
Many thanks for your PMs. Your offers of help are much appreciated even if unnecessary.
I've pretty much hit the quota limit - only 1 left as of 2100 UK time Saturday.
I'll be sending a mass email in the next few days, as there are a number of gaps in some of the PMs.
Please can I ask Stringer, Nelg, Barlight and orzelc to each PM me your email address.
Cheers
Howard

I was lucky enough to meet you,Andrew - and Paul - after the gig in Manchester (wearing my beer stained Minnesota Vikings shirt)- lovely people.
I did not know the story and was metaphorically picking my jaw off the floor.
It is totally inspiring stuff - hope that all goes well.
Very best.

The clapping was in full force last night in Newcastle during First night.
The version of First Night minus strings is absolutely wonderful and one of my favourite things from this tour when they played it first up in Paris 2 weeks ago

Dear all,
As of just now, I have 9 PMs so I assume that is 9 shirts gone, plus one for Selvidge and Noah. I think there are going to be 3 van juras so I'm already up to 14.
A few points arise :-
1 I'm going to have to resort to a mass email once I have the orders, so if you are unhappy that the other shirt recipients will know your email, best cancel your order.
2 I forgot to ask you to specify a size (though a number of you have done so and thanks for that) - please do so, if you have not done so.
3 barlight and beer - the shirts won't have your name on them, just a number - that is the wiki list. it would be great if someone can update the wiki list after this round.
4 I make no promises about how long this will take - I have a day job and family. The last batch I did took around a couple of months I think, but we will see.
5 A few of you have offered to help out on the costs, which offers are gratefully received, but probably unnecessary. The issue is likely to be postage and admin, but I may be able to get some help in that direction.
I'm going to call , say next Wednesday as a cut off and will begin the process at that stage with the orders I have then (though I suspect I may well be at 25 before that).
If anyone is able to change the heading of this thread to "Next round of shirts - apply here" or similar, that might be sensible.
Also, if any of you are in florida this weekend, the band are on brilliant form.

Dear all
I have just had another astonishing night courtesy of ths and will do a round of shirts since it has been far too long.
This will be a round of 25shirts and first come first served save that nowah gets two shirts and Selvidge another so22 left. Plus a couple of van juras now I think about it
Check the wiki for numbers and you will need to pm your emails.
I may need to lean on eg Brendan Camie for where the design is at.
Happy to fund but any offers of admin help welcome.
As the man said, stay positive

That was another brilliant night out. Great to see so many of you all again.
As ever, the band were brilliant - quite delighted to see them play banging camp and American music (latter for the second time this week.
I thought I recognised Frank Turner down the front - but it was pretty lively and a few cold drinks had been taken.
It was also great to go to quinns again - the Guinness was quite excellent. Fantastic to see the bands manager Dave Gottlieb - love the fact he made the effort to come out and talk to the fans in the pub, when he could no doubt have been doing a million other things.
