1. Morally blackmailing the band into doing Milkcrate Mosh at Thursday's soundcheck event, despite the fact three of them either couldn't remember it or didn't know it in the first place. Tad seemed to be telling Steve the chord changes as they went along. 2. Howard forcing so many pints of frozen margaritas on me at Thursday's show that I woke up the following morning both hungover and still drunk. 3. Hearing Knuckles live for the first time in I don't know how many dozen shows. 4. Going into the pit for the first time in decades on Friday and Saturday. 5. Craig admonishing the "bro asshole" on Saturday when - at the first THS show with an all-woman front row - this guy thought he could get to the front by elbowing women out of the way. 6. The woman at Friday's soundcheck who, realising I was English, asked if I was Howard. No. "Then you must be the other one!" The other one? "The one whose wife doesn't like the Hold Steady!" No, she likes them, just not enough to come over for four consecutive shows. "Oh. Who are *you* then?" You know there are more than two people in England, right? 7. Meeting Camie and others of the people who've followed this band around for years, as I have. I normally keep myself to myself and just talk to the people I already know. Coming alone to this gave me the impetus to talk to others. I'm glad I did. 8. When very drunk, on Saturday, talking to one bearded and bald fan and insisting he was Michael Stipe. Someone (Camie?) then said: You know he wanted to talk to you because he adores your writing? "Why didn't someone say? I love being adored!" 9. Spending a load of time with the people I do know, and enjoying every minute of it. 10. Tad and Steve thinking it hilarious that when Rob Sheffield and I met for the first time, we both declined all compliments from the other.
Those were four amazing nights. I was so tired when I got back that I was woken up on Tuesday morning by a publicist asking why I hadn't turned up to my interview with Glen Campbell's daughter … Whoops.

Wait, they did milkcrate mosh at the Thursday soundcheck!? They did. The background to this is that years ago I got the surviving members of Led Zeppelin to autograph a copy of IV for Tad when I interviewed them. In return he promised to play a song of my choosing at a show. That song was Milkcrate Mosh. It never got played. While hosting the Thursday Q&A I reminded him of that, on stage. When they finished the soundcheck, Craig said, "Right, shall we do Milkcrate Mosh, then?" And there we go.

My random highlights:
* Entering Brooklyn Bowl, and realizing it was pretty close to the best venue I've ever been to. The hardwood floors, the lights, the bar, the entire feeling of the room - and then the sound was amazing from the first note as well. * Drinking a Hold Steady beer at a Hold Steady show. It was really good too. * Patterson Hood doing What It Means * Quickly discover the sing-a-long power of these crowds. I know there were a lot of fans there, but that SO many people would loudly scream along to SO many parts of SO many songs, was a pleasant surprise. * Meeting up with skepticatfirst before the Thursday show, eating tacos and drinking beer before the show, and enjoying the show itself so much that he decided to try to get into the Friday show as well. He succeded. * HIstory Lesson pt. II. A lovely song perfectly executed, and a song who carries a lot of personal meaning to me as well. * Hanging out at Lake Street Bar, both thursday afternoon and after the shows on a couple of the nights. * How Steve and Franz fistbumped and hugged each other when Craig doing his speech on the six piece being ace. * Banging Camp as a fucking opener on friday * Knuckles and Certain Songs making it to the setlists * In general, hearing the piano again in songs like Stevie Nix, Sequestered, First Night and plenty more. I had been looking so much forward to see Hold Steady again that I almost forgot it was my first Franz shows since fall 2009 till I saw him on stage. * Frank Turner. Wow. * Frank Turner doing Make America Great Again * The entire Frank Turner set * Frank Turner being crazy energetic on Constructive Summer * Spending Saturday all the way at the back - after three nights of jumping and fist pumping, it was surprisingly nice to just stand at the back, enjoy the music-as-music, and look out over the crowd who was going ballistic. I felt like I could do one night as a pure spectator, and it was allright. * Williamsburg and Greenpoint in general. I really like those parts of the city.
Lots of other highlights, and I think I need to wrap them up in norwegian somewhere.
Thanks to all of you for making those nights so special. We've talked so much about a unified scene, and if I wasn't already convinced on the genuinity of it, those four nights were the final proof. Love the Hold Steady. Love the Unified Scene. Hopefully, I'll be back in 2018.

After a few days of not drinking, it seems about the right time to put down some random Brooklyn memories: -
1 frozen margarita. By the pint. 2 spilling drinks on a random guy - I was carrying 4 pints in each hand. An apology and a beer later - we are famous friends. 3 Said guy turning out be a Professor and his partner also Professor. Explained that i had never met 2 professors within the same hour. Those 2 professors are coming to London in March. 4 Champagne - from a can, at Lake St. I did not inspect the label, but it was clearly not Vintage Dom Perignon. 5 Meeting Rob Sheffield for the first time - what an absolute star. Managed not to say," You are really tall" as I'm sure he is sick of being told something he has known for many years. 6. Talking to Frank Turner at Lake St. Also very tall. 7. Thanking Frank Turner for insisting that on the tourbus when Franz supported FT, they watch the box set of Shooting Stars. Still love the fact that Franz was mystified about the whole Shooting Stars thing. 8 Making a snow angel in the confetti on the stage after all the bands gear had been removed on the Saturday night. I could see the outline in one of Rich's photos on these boards. 9. almost everyone seemed to know almost every word to every song. 10. the quality of the openers. 11. the amount of hipsters in Williamsburg - as an English person looking the wrong way when crossing the road, nearly being wiped out by middle aged men on skateboards in the road. 12 Mosh Pit Josh refusing a beer from me (he took it in the end). Mosh Pit Josh in fine form on stage. 13 Camie's confetti. 14 watching the Vikings win at Atlanta - they look like the real deal. (though I have been warned that they are likely impostors, so as to help manage my expectations). 15 the kindness, honestly and friendliness of everyone I met. 16 As I've said before it is a total honour and a pleasure to travel so far from home, yet be made so welcome and to thus feel so much at home. 17 the band were on fire throughout. Can' t help agree with CF saying that this is the best line-up ever. Clearly they have the best material avaialable too. 18 Banging Camp to open a show. 19 the OP holding a lighter aloft during Discouraged. Not old, just old school.

* Knuckles and Certain Songs making it to the setlists Certain Songs was probably my favorite song of the weekend...something about how spare most of it was, with just Franz on keys and Craig singing.
