Further to the New Year's Eve gig thread:
If Dan has left, then who's going to play the keyboards?
Now I know this is wishful thinking, but..........
THS UK tour 4th - 18th Feb.
Franz Nicolay's last UK gig 18th Jan, then he's in the US 26th Feb.

I miss him on that stage though.
Who will they rope in then, I wonder?

at a guess, they are going without a keyboardist on tour. bad idea? possibly, but dan's sound has been so turned down in the mix, they've effectively been without a keyboardist since fn left. they still put on a good show without it.
franz clearly has other plans. (and they're f'n great, people. have you heard him solo yet? damn.) of course, if i thought he were to come play the MHOW shows just for fun, i would so be there.

Does it really matter? For these last few outings Dan was placed behind the rest of the band to the point you could barely see him, and was turned down so low in the mix you could barely hear him. I honestly don't think it matters who it is, so long as they don't tour without someone - save for AKM and HIW, all of their albums are very key-heavy, and I don't like the prospect of hearing those songs live without keys.
Just to pick out one song they play nearly every night as an example, can you imagine "Stuck Between Stations" without that piano?

How about Constructive Summer? The always reliable one-two punch of Constructive Summer and Hot Soft Light felt super flat without those up-front keys at First Ave this past December.

There will be keys. I just know it.
In the show I saw at the House Of Blues in Vegas last November....Dan's keys sat nicely in the mix, and I heard every bit of them. It was joyous. Best sound ever at a THS show. They must have keys.

I'm with you cre618. At the Lincoln Hall show the keys were loud, strong, and even had a solo.

I thought I couldn't face THS without keys man. Franz was one of the main reasons I even dug the band in the first place... that 'stache, the rollicking barroom piano... the onstage bravado. You could always tell he'd be the first to leave though. I really like the more alt-rock Hold Steady without keys though as well - I think that could only be interesting without the second guitar too though - Tad is well capable of shining on his own and I reckon if there isn't to be keys they need to strip back and be lean and mean and like Almost Killed Me... It's also more tour cost effective to just take four people + FoH, Merch and Tech...
It's a trend with bands - I went to see DBT in Manchester (UK) last year and they had all sorts going on (three guitars, keys, five vocals, bass, drums...) and it all sounded kinda muddy and weird because they didn't make room for it to happen - one thing Franz was great at was knowing how to fill out a sound without it getting all mushy and impenetrable, he embellished rather than coloured. I believe that makes a difference.
