I was under the impression that for the two albums Franz played on as a full-time member, there was a general Finn/Kubler/Nicolay writing credit. I thought Franz wrote a couple, and added the whoa-oh-oh choruses (which I can cheerfully live without), but most of the music was Tad? Have neither of us ever actually bothered checking?

Sounds like!
I don't think you're too far from the truth but I had Franz down as playing a bit of a bigger role.

The majority of THS's catalog is credited to Craig and Tad as co-writers. The exceptions are:
Songs credited to Craig and Franz only: YEAH SAPPHIRE TWO HANDED HANDSHAKE TEENAGE LIBERATION PARTY PIT MAGAZINES FOR BOSTON
Songs credited to Craig, Tad, and Franz: YOU CAN MAKE HIM LIKE YOU STUCK BETWEEN STATIONS MASSIVE NIGHTS JOKE ABOUT JAMAICA HURRICANE J HOT SOFT LIGHT CHIPS AHOY CHILLOUT TENT CHEYENNE SUNRISE
Not directly related to the Franz issue, but the other songs not credited to Craig/Tad are:
STEVIE NIX: Craig, Tad, and Galen
KNUCKLES: Craig CERTAIN SONGS: Craig
ROCK PROBLEMS: Craig/Tad/John Reis

That's really interesting - something I've been wondering about for ages.
Sort of makes Tad's comment after Franz left that he had been the main songwriter in the band for a while kinda stange, when Franz had a co-writing credit on 5 songs from Stay Positive.
Definitely something going on behind the scenes there that we don't know about. Either that or Tad was badly misquoted in the Pitchfork interview.

Definitely something going on behind the scenes there that we don't know about. Either that or Tad was badly misquoted in the Pitchfork interview. he could have 5% of the song and be listed as a co-writer. not saying that's true - it almost certainly isn't - but only writers are public, not the actual splits.

franz never got more than a 10% share on any song that appeared on the albums. most of the time he wrote a bridge. that's it. he got a good deal at 10%. tad writes the music. craig writes the lyrics. it ain't complicated. he wrote more parts for songs like the b sides mentioned above. there is a reason why they are b sides.

Even assuming the music on the three-way co-writes was split evenly between Tad and Franz, that list still perfectly justifies Tad's claim to be the main songwriter (of music).

BAGIA was the 1st THS album I had. Take the keys out of that album and it just wouldn't be as good.
Flipside of that - Did I spend much time at any post-Franz show thinking about the lack of keys ? Nah.

Nah. This. Exactly. Although my favorite THS song is Citrus, and it's hard to imagine them performing that without keys.

To be honest, until this thread started, most people I knew thought Craig wrote the lyrics and music - so the more people that now realise that the songs are 50/50 between Craig and Tad the beter.

I love Citrus. It's my favorite of their songs. I have a hard time imagining them playing it live in their current guitar-driven, keyboard/accordion/Franz-less, RAWK incarnation.
Er...not that complicated is it?

Mind you, given how infrequently they played Citrus anyway, it's not really that much of issue, is it?

I think a dual acoustic Citrus would be pretty sweet.

I think it'd be interesting to have Steve's sparkly clean southern rock playing it an octave higher, while Tad goes acoustic. Or if one of them pulled out a 12-string, which would change the flavor.
