You know, I've actually been to Hold Steady shows with people who didn't walk out that impressed...but THS still has an audience.

I don't know if anyone has already made this argument, but I don't see this being much worse than them opening for the Rolling Stones. They're both pretty bad, and they're both huge, but I don't think it really matters much. As long as THS consistently release good records and play shows in Austin, I don't care.

Let's all forget that the Rolling Stones were brought up and watch this parody of a DMB song:

Yeah, that will probably happen. No, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, that will probably happen. No, it doesn't matter. Ben's right. Plus, these shows are always worth doing for the catering.

I just don't see much difference between playing a show with a bunch of withered rock stars who are wayyy past their prime and a relatively modern band who suck just as much.

probably because the withered rockstars who are way past their prime brought out some of the greatest records ever and changed the face of pop music when they were in their prime.

DMB... not so much. just because you don't like either doesn't mean that they are on the same level.

for further irony THS are pretty old compared to most of their indie-rock peers....
i'm actually watching a thing on the Stones now one of the reasons i love THS is 'cause of all the rock and roll fanservice - the references that make sense to kids brought up on classic rock the Stones are it. last week me and my friends - all around 20 - were trying to find a jukebox that played 'Get Off Of My Cloud' and man the songs 'The sunlight bores the daylight out of me'
'If i could tear my heart with my hand Bleed right out on the stage Would it be enough for your teenage lust Would it help you ease the pain? I KNOW ITS ONLY ROCK AND ROLL BUT I LIKE IT LIKE IT YES I DO'
c'mon. THS can open for them with pride

I think tlon means that the DMB gig is just a paycheck whereas the Stones was both. Sold no merch though.

I think tlon means that the DMB gig is just a paycheck whereas the Stones was both. Sold no merch though. exactly. i can't speak for the band but from a fan's standpoint both are good for the money and the exposure but opening for the Stones places THS in that lineage - as somebody who can open for rock and roll royalty sure, some shit bands open for good bands (Counting Crows are touring with The Who here. Fergie opened for The Police) but there's a 'when the jester sang for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean' situation (Dylan playing for Joan Baez and Pete Seeger) like they're the next generation ready to pick up the torch I buy wholeheartedly into the rock and roll mythology THS play into. The Stones might be old and a bit washed up but they're still THE ROLLING STONES

I'm just trying to make a point that it really doesn't matter too much who a band opens for, as long as the music and shows they play are good. I would totally be behind a band like, say, Against Me! if they still put out relevant records, but since they don't it's hard for me to really agree with what they do now.
I don't think the Hold Steady fall under this category, and they shouldn't be getting as much shit as it seems they are for this.

Bingo. Who a band opens for should and does carry zero reflection on who that band is and wants to be. Be happy for the potential to be considered. And consider, as a fan, the motivation for the band to accept the opening slot. And after all, the band had to accept and want the opening slot. The days of the "sellout" band are over. Period. Be happy for them. DMB draw. A shitload.

This is pretty clearly the next step along the path towards "Adult Contemporary Indie" that they've been following for a couple years for now, coinciding neatly with my decreased interest in them. Good luck to them in their future endeavors, I'm sure they sleep well knowing that there's an entire monolythic cultural mythology of celebrity/fame supporting their decisions. have you listened to those songs? 'Kids on the East Coast/about 20 years old/get lured out by a certain perfect ratio/of warm beer to the summer smoke/Meat Loaf to the Billy Joel' they celebrate the power of 'classic rock' and all that stuff. besides, i don't care if they get into 'adult contemporary'. compared to most of the pussy indie bands i listen to THS are Black Flag

six (6) shows - out of what, 200 we're likely to play any given year? seems like an awful lot of fuss.
