Cheers, mate. I could be an average man in the street though. But with a highly tuned musical ear ;D. Interesting trawling through the 'criticisms' thread as well as this one. It all gets a bit fraught .... and I think elitist. DMB do certainly fire up some opinion over in the States it seems due to this "frat boy" fan image. No idea about this as a Uk fan (for about ... *thinks* 15 years). They've nicely stayed a 'secret' band for me. I've seen them a few times and it's always fun to see people I know go "who?" when I say I've been off to London to see some band who are "huge in the States". I am as smug with this as I am about THS.

yeah, i think it's kind of like how oasis are so much more hateable over here than elsewhere on account of a lot of their british fans being braindead scumbags (and the fact they've consistently refused to progress musically for like a decade and a half now).

there have been some totally great bands from manchester, though (the smiths, joy division, etc.), it's just there's also been some real wishy-washy overrated crap too (aside from oasis there's been badly drawn boy, the happy mondays, the stone roses...oh man, people are gonna hate me for this!).

You are a brave man Mike. I don't know much of Badly Drawn Boy but Billy Bragg got him up on stage at the last Manchester gig so he must be pretty good at what he does. Billy Bragg is the man after all. Everything from Manchester, other than Joy Division, passes me by really.

don't really know the Stone Roses Australia's got some pretty bad overexposed bands but we've also got guys like Augie March and The Living End and You Am I who deserve overseas fame, or at least cult status i love telling Aussies that Nick Cave is more popular in America then Kylie Minogue (or 'our Kylie'). always makes me feel smug anyway i lived in ground zero of DMB fandom, so my hate is legit

i've got a 'friend' who talks about DMB on Facebook. he's white, plays didgiridoo, and always lectures everybody on the whales and the environment and all that BS. i pointed out that listening to Crash is the 'douchiest' thing you could say and he didn't understand me and yes, i still support THS getting more fans. i also support attacking fake trust fund hippies this guy is an Aussie, BTW
