I find it completely bizarre that so many people are taking this PERSONALLY. Like THS have decided to support a band you think are bland just to annoy YOU. Well, sunshine, that ain't the truth. Maybe we should be admiring of the work ethic that keeps the boys touring ALL THE DAMN TIME, or glad that they're presumably making some decent money off this. Maybe it won't be the THS tour of your dreams, but hey, didn't a lot of you guys just get that with the Drive-by Truckers? Is this going to affect the music that THS produce? Probably not. Is this going to have any long term impact? Probably not, unless it gets some DMB fans to buy a couple of cds, and who knows - maybe show up on this board! What a shitty thread for them to arrive to.

This is a nice little leap for our friends The Hold Steady. One of the reasons I think people are in rock bands that are serious about what they do is to be successful.I am glad to see THS will be rocking out with a band like DMB. They are all consummate musicians who happen to have taken off with the jam band kids. Big Fucking Deal. You are forgetting that you all (includes self) are part of a group that is referred to as some type of quasi hipster. Go read the DBT site for confirmation of that. Nobody was pissed off when THS played with the Stones, but their is audience is a bunch of OLD fucking white people who are trying to fit into skinny jeans and old tour t shirts. (includes self except for skinny jeans) When did we become so cool that we decide to categorize where we think its cool to play? Isn't that the antithesis of the music that THS is trying to spread around? Personally I LIKE Counting Crows. I think Durwitz has a way with words and is guy who is totally absorbed by the music. I LIKE Dave Matthews. I have about 10 of his discs and have seen him solo with Tim Reynolds. There was nothing unenjoyable about that show. So I guess I am in the minority about seeing them play with this band. DMB plays The Garden alot. Man I would be stoked to see Koob blow the rafters off of that old barn, I wouldn't care who the fuck they were warming up. I guess I am saying, do not walk up and wanna shake the hands of some of the most accessible guys in the music business and buy them a drink, and then vilify them for wanting to make money at what they do. We always knew they were good, and now other people are feeling the same way. We don't own the rights to them. If they were playing with Gwar i would go see them. Finally, anybody who accuses the band of selling out yet works for someone else or sells their service to someone else, well, think about it. Unless you are living in a hut on a desert island with no one in sight ...you are connected. I think thats what Craig means when he sings "we're all the hold steady". Fuck, you cant get more lovey-dovey, hacky sack , bong smoking sentimental than that.

I saw Sansabelt Trousers when they were just starting out. They were warming up The Beach Boys.

In the name of keeping things civil, I'm going to lock this thread.
Everything that needs to be said HAS been said and we shouldn't bicker any more.

Like the Blondette, I don't understand people's rage about this. Every band does support slots. A lot of them do thankless spots when they are young bands and get paid no money. THS are doing it only at the point at which they are being offered good money to do them. They are men approaching middle age who have not yet made much money from music. It's not long ago that some of them had to go to work the Monday morning after a tour ended. They do not yet have rockstar mansions: they have rooms, or shared apartments. I wouldn't pay to see these gigs, or the gigs with Counting Crows, but that's by the by: being in The Hold Steady is a job; let them do their job without carping about it. By all means moan when the records become rubbish or the gigs halfhearted, but don't moan about people trying to earn a living.

I'm having a problem figuring out if an influx of frat-douches into the "Hold Steady Fan" column would really matter. I mean would it be much more of a blow to the wonderfulness of the Steady than the whole Unified Scene dorking up the shows with their member-numbered shirts, over-over-overzealous singing along and faux Twins fandom? Or hell, would it be worse than the entirety of "Navy Sheets" for that matter?

Eh, in a couple of days everyone will have cooled off and come back, I'm sure. This is a tight knit little community, so squabbles are bound to happen. But it also seems unlikely people would give it up over a storm in a teacup.

If you're lying on your deathbed bitter about that instead of all the good shows, that's your own problem. To steal a little from cf, there's always other shows, there's always other tourmates.

I was sorta pissed about this for like, a second. I'm cool with it now. We all do what we do to get by, and this is no exception. This will be just a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things.
Only bummer is I've got alot of friends who I've been trying real hard to get into this band, to no avail. An opening spot for DMB will be the nail in the coffin on those efforts.

I don't get the DMB.
If you don't want to go, don't go.
It's not our divine right to see THS with the likes of The Thermals/Art Brut/DBT/The Rolling Stones all of the time.
So what, DMB and Counting Crows are overblown A/MOR. Never mind eh?
Perhaps THS will release their next album on dubbed C90s available only by mail-order just to make sure they keep it exclusive for us.
