probably! Dave Matthews cares about the animals, man, and all his trust fun hippie fans truly care about the Earth too (while driving their Mom's SUVs to Pottery Barn and Trader Joe's) I think you're confusing DMB fans with Phish fans actually, it's not too far off. dave matthews is a founder of the farm aid non-profit, which supports and encourages small family farming. my friend/former prof wrote a book about farm aid and said that he was by far the most accessible interviewee out of the others (dylan, neil young, john mellencamp). i really don't have too much of a problem with dave matthews as a person, and there is certainly worse music than DMB. it's just that somehow, somewhere, a bunch of fucked-up stars aligned and a voice spake down unto earth, "all douchey frat guys must love this band. you must. love. this. band." it really doesn't make much sense to me.

Coming clean: I saw DMB on 8/8/04, aka the show they were leaving before they dumped poop on everyone that was on the boat in the Chicago River. I don't really mind them all that much, but I'm not an active listener, either. They have a couple good tunes though.
Big deal. This is good for THS.

I think you're confusing DMB fans with Phish fans mmm. Because DMB fans love crushin' Naty Ice with their bros in the parkin' lot, dude. And smokin this DANK herb they got from this one kid who lives across campus. Of course you can substitute DMB with THS and that statement still works.

Two THS shows oh so close???
NO MOTHERFUCKING WAY.
I may not even be back here.
This is fucking stupid.
I don't give is shit if they sell out or not - doesn't make a damn bit of difference to me. However, playing with such a lame, stupid, suck hole band, I just don't get.
I hate this.

XO WD) Thanks WD! i think i will pass however. maybe if the were opening for phish or moe. but i can't justify flying out for DMB. however, on a posi tip, i dislike studio DMB, my friend had an extra ticket one time when i was home and convinced me to go. AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND! great live band, one of my favorite shows, and i'll stand by that. still would not buy an album, but definately would go to another show, and when we went, believe it or not, we drove my friends shit-hole beater. however i do agree that most of the DMB demographic are college jock idiots with SUVs. oh well, i bet they're nice people too, i know i've met some nice ones. it's called open-mindedness. don't judge a book by the cover: band, jock, or otherwise. live and let live, and be prepared to see some of those jocks and hippies at your next THS show, b/c i know they'll be blown away, and be high fiving and keg-standing to THS for the rest of their extended college lives after hearing the boys. rock on! i would be there if it were out west.

When I was younger I LOVED DMB, it would be great to see one of these shows. To see my favorite band when i was 12 and may favorite band 10 years later, would be awesome! Give Dave a chance you guys, he's quite talented, and has a good ear for melody.

I am neutral on DMB. Dude, I don't care if THS open for the Kiss little person tribute band (they exist, look it up). I saw PJ Harvey open for Live - gave Live ten minutes to win me and went to dinner. I still saw a kicking PJH set.
Bring it. (And also, what is with the place tonight?)

I don't know why DMB gets such a bad rap. I'd also think there'd be a bit of a lap-over in fan bases (that would be called "the Frat Boy effect").

If ticket prices weren't ludicrous and I was in the US, I would go to the gig solely to watch THS as I did when they played in London with the Counting Crows last year who I have no interest in whatsoever, and I've seen other bands I like support some pish bands and left before the headliners came on stage.
DMB are relatively unknown in the UK hence some of the UK bases forumites not understanding the acronymn - I'd hazard a guess that THS have outsold them and could fill bigger venues here than DMB, but then we (generally) hace far better taste in music than Americans ;-)

I love the dejected "how could they?" attitude some of you kids have around here.
Like THS should only play gigs with bands they or their fans, collectively, approve of.
It's not like they're cutting a duet album, or Matthews is producing the next album - they're playing six shows. A blip in the radar that will be forgotten by October. The pay is probably decent enough, the venues are big, and it keeps them busy.
Is it gonna turn an ampitheatre full of motherfuckers more interested in meeting up with their friends and buying beer and french fries before DMB come on stage into Hold Steady fans? Probably not, but maybe they'll sell a few copies of Stay Positive.
How many good bands have done opening slots for lesser, larger bands? Plenty. Didn't hurt The Pixies, didn't hurt Old 97's, didn't hurt the 'Mats, Jon Brion... and those are just a few off the top of my head.
Personally, I'd probably pass on this show. Not that it's an option, geographically, but I couldn't imagine spending DMB ticket prices to watch a bunch of people talk through eight Hold Steady songs. Maybe some of y'all will go and have a good time. Maybe some of y'all will stay home and forget it is even happening. Either way, no reason to cry about it.

this could actually be really good for me cause now maybe when my friend drags me to frat parties i'll actually have something to talk about with the frat boys. i'm not kidding.
more people knowing who the hold steady are would make me very happy.

*couldn't give a shit about who THS supports. eats crisps, snuggles in hoody*
i think y'all should calm down and eat some cake or drink some beer. this is not the end of civilisation as we know it. honestly. it is not. the boys getting known is a GOOD thing, yes?

I think it is good news for the band. The people who see DMB shell out big bucks, and will go home and download the tunes and rock out. Maybe even tell a friend or two. Let's not all get up on our collective high horse. If somebody came to your job and said "hey, I know you haven't had a paycheck in a month, but I'm going to pay you handsomely to [insert your job here] for two weeks. Plus you get all expenses paid and help your career as a [insert your job here] by exposing you to people who will support your job as a [insert your job here]. What do you say?" Of course all of you are going to say, "that doesn't seem very cool or fit with my perceived image. I'll go another six months or more without getting paid." Right? Wisely stated, jwd. I've read all the jokes here. I understand the vibe completely on both sides. But y'know what would be even more hilarious is if THS, as the opener, rocks the shit out of the DMB crowd night after night - people jumping up and down, bopping their heads to the music, a mosh pit created and all - and DMB had to come out night after night and live up to that shit (and subsequently regretted giving THS the slot!). Now, that would be funny! I'd pay big to see that.

I've been a fan of the DMB since 1998 when they released Before These Crowded Streets.
I find that the majority of folks who generalize about the DMB have not heard their full body of work. At any rate, they are one of the hardest working, most humble bands on the planet. Their music is honest.
Mr. Matthews has an exceptional reputation with respect to his supporting acts. He personally introduces each band and he treats them like kings.
I can't imagine why anyone would see this as an issue.

When I saw the headline my first thought was I hope they don't come here. I don't want to have to buy overprised tickets to see THS play for 45 minutes in cavernous auditorium. Plus if they came as an opening band they wouldn't come back and headline for a while.
So this is the first time I was happy to see THS skip Minneapolis on their tour.
