Not to beat this dead horse further, but Fallon set himself up for the "BROOOOOOCE" cheers. He says, "Maybe you'd like to do Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" (Long Pause) OR?". Everybody in the crowd thought the same thing. And the line "That was MY awesome thing, not yours". You can't up the douche-ometer any higher than that, can you?
And so his punishment to us for not fulfilling his singalong wishes? Playing Gaslight Anthem songs!!
It was a blissful evening, the rain was not unpleasant, THS was smoking, and TGA was fun too, and obviously the crowd was digging it. UNTIL. I guess sometimes there is SO LITTLE JOY for poor Brian.

I've felt the same about the production, it just never grabbed me. I'm pretty excited about the switch back to the brilliant John Agnello (BAGIA, SP, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile). He's pretty excited about it too!

First time seeing the band this year (lack of Brooklyn/NYC shows) and first time traveling out-of-town for a show. Took three hours to drive there from Queens. Two hours to get to the Holland Tunnel, then one more to Bethlehem. Something is wrong with that math!
Great venue, easy to get near the stage, planted myself in front of Tad.
Craig was in great form, did blow the 90's line in the Positive Jam opener, took a little while to pull it back! Bobby's drum troubles led to some interesting stage banter, including a long Q&A session. CF: Any questions? Me: Why do you wear a watch onstage? CF: This J. Crew? Because I like to be on time! And it hides a little patch of excema (which he showed off).
He went into a long rant about the NHL BS, talked about going home for Xmas and catching three high school hockey games.
Bobby had snare problems, and ended up blowing out his bass drum head.
The crowd was great, recognized a lot of Brooklyn faces. By the end of the show, the place felt like MHOW, just not as much sweaty bumping. Despite being in Yuengling country, Dusty still set the band up with Bud cans. Craig spilled more than he drank.
Can't tell you how tempted I was to hit Philly the next night and NYE in Jersey, but when you're 50 and married, you pick your spots wisely! This one was a great choice.

I was at the show. The sound sucked there, because of all the marble, (it was an old bank), but the sound on the broadcast was pretty good. EVERYONE was drunk there, because each teller's window had a bartender serving free Grey Goose! Craig was REAL drunk, Lord, I'm Discouraged was pretty much a shambles. But I recall the show being VERY fun!

Yep, confirmed by John, and he's been posting on Facebook nearly daily about how much fun the sessions have been. Seems to me that the band was a lot happier with BAGIA and SP than HIW, hopefully the songs are up to his ballsy production!

Great post! Interesting to see probably the first critical opinion on the band pre- AKM.

Wow, so no keys it is. Weird and exciting. I have seen them four times, two times with Franz and two times with Steve/Dan. So the Dublin gig will be my first keyless experience with Hold Steady. I kind of look forward to it, but I'm a bit sad that my two friends, which don't know the band at all, won't see them with a keyboard player. I think it might have been easier digging them, seeing them for the first time, with keys rather than without. How did Stevie Nix play out without keys? Everything worked just fine. Stevie Nix into First Night was different, but great. More guitar, don't remember Craig putting his down at all, and Tad and Steve had a few great guitar battles, especially on DJ.

this was i think the eighth time i saw 'em -- and probably my favorite show to date. the crowd made it for me. i am always so down to dance (and drink and pogo), and rarely does one encounter such a high-energy soft spot right up at the front. don't know how many of you me and sam and nicki met/crashed into but ... it was good vibes all around. man, i have no regrets about reckless monday-night denial of responsibilities. i just kinda wish there had been a little joke about jamaica to go with it. i was all worried they were going to close with southtown girls, which is definitely the weakest last-track, in my opinion. but everything gets played. anyway, hi. thanks so much for being great. I felt the same about the energy of the band and the crowd, and the bliss going on down front! I was up front between Craig and Tad, and it was all good fun and beautiful vibes, no pushing, nobody scrambling to get up front, lots of hugging and jumping and strangers holding hands. For one night, we're all lifelong friends. The buzz and warmth I get from these show lasts for days, and blows away this insane winter!

Remarkable set. One of my favorites, no doubt. Great crowd energy, band seemed to be having a great time. Keys or no keys, they still rule. Craig noted that they played their first show there eight years ago to the day when it was North Six on January 31, 2003. Interesting that they're now closer to that lineup than they were for most of their existence. Full circle. Adderall The Swish Magazines Rock Problems Hurricane J Cattle Barfruit Sweet Part... Same Kooks Sequestered Barely Breathing Discouraged Constructive Chips Ahoy! Stations Stevie Nix First Night Ascension Blues Massive Nights Slapped Actress ENCORE Positive Jam Southtown Girls Most People are DJ's Great, great setlist, played the first four off of AKM! My favorite show so far! Great meeting you guys on line, however, I think 5:30 was uncalled for! We got there at 7:15 and did just fine!! Are you posting your pics anywhere? I usually bring a camera to shows, but skipped this one, you must have gotten some great shots from your vantage point. Dave

All i know is she had on I think jeans and a turteleneck sweater. But she was out. I tried to lift her and she was dead weight. i didnt see her face, so i dont know about the eyes rolling back ("Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.). We must have been right next to one another Dead weight is exactly right Nice Jaws reference! Going tonight, and totally psyched! Will be dancing and jumping way too much to text song by song though! See y'all there!

yeah, i just got home too. i loved this show for all the old stuff they played but the venue (gorgeous as it is) sucked. i was one of those people trying to inch my way up the aisle, only to be chased back every 5 minutes by an usher. i'm sorry, at a hold steady show i want to jump around with people, shout with people, sweat on people and enjoy it in a giant mass of other fans. seats SUCK. i was alternately SO happy and SO sad tonight. the hold steady is one one of the only reasons i will step outside of myself and let go....i am an insular person, a person who does not easily "hang" with stangers...except at a THS show. this was my 7th. and i go to them all solo. and i was so sad that i couldn't bounce around with people who love them as much as i do, couldn't connect with people who feel similar connections with the fucking most awesome band ever. that being said, they fucking rocked. they played like, what, 3 songs from HIW? and the rest was good old THS, lots from AKM and SS and BAGIA....sigh. fucking great. From your description, sounds like you were right across the aisle from me! There was a girl in Orchestra center, about row B on the left aisle, who was up and dancing the entire show, looked like she was wishing the show was anywhere else!

OK, just got back from the show. Great performance by the band, sound was surprisingly lousy from where I was, Orchestra Left 7th row, may have been better from the center. I'd be interested in hearing from those in the balcony.
Regarding the venue, the whole THS experience is meant to be shared, hugged, sweated and rubbed onto each other. It was bizarre to see the diehards raving it up in front of seats. The ushers were pretty adamant about keeping the aisles clear. Periodically, the aisle next to me became somewhat blocked. There was an older couple next to me and another even older couple in back of them, both couples on the aisle. The one in back kept chasing down the ushers to get people to sit down and stop blocking their view. Neither couple stood for more than a few songs or appeared to be having much fun. Not sure what attracted them to this show, or what they had heard about the band.
I didn't keep a setlist, I'm sure someone will follow up with it. I thought the band live sound has def. tightened up since I last saw them at MHOW in Brooklyn back in the spring. Steve and Dan sound great! Craig is in top form, really commanded the big stage. He's becoming one of the top frontmen in rock, in my opinion! Appeared to be having a ball, as always.
A great show, and I can't wait until they unleash their fury in a local bar soon! I'll feel more right.

A good place and REAL close is Yogi's, one block north of the Beacon on Broadway. It's the traditional watering hole for preshow. It's a dive, the beer is cheap, they play great music and the bartenders are SMOKING! Been there a dozen times before Allmans shows, a bit crowded, but it'll do the trick. Isn't Yogi's closed? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Stevie Nix is pretty common, they've played it at about 6 of the ten shows I've been to.
Regarding moshing, it's the most positive moshing I've ever experienced. I was at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn show, and was amazed at the crowd energy right up front. I was next to the stage, dead center, good natured pushing and swaying and swapping sweat, but anytime someone started to fall, 5 people would hold them up. I'm too old for this (48) but I get a high from all the physical energy of a Hold Steady show!

was i the only one who kinda listened to Constructive Summer and Stay Positive as alternate Obama campaign/election songs, respectively? That definitely crossed my mind in '08.
