Has a pre-game and post-game bar been established yet? I haven't been to a show at the Beacon before, so my knowledge of good pre-show bars on the UWS to recommend is somewhat limited. Thoughts?
I can't wait for this freakin' show.....

Sadly the Beacon Theatre area is rife with shitty bars. I am going to 'Dive 75' with a few friends before the show. A block away from the venue, has the word dive in the fucking name...it should suffice. www.yelp.com/biz/dive-75-new-york

A good place and REAL close is Yogi's, one block north of the Beacon on Broadway. It's the traditional watering hole for preshow. It's a dive, the beer is cheap, they play great music and the bartenders are SMOKING! Been there a dozen times before Allmans shows, a bit crowded, but it'll do the trick.

Does THS play The Baseball Project's "Don't Call Them Twinkies" tonight? I think if the Twins win game 2 (should be ending just beofre THS hits the stage), they do....

Stoked for the show. Drove down this afternoon after the Boston show last night. Never seen anyone on consecutive nights before, let alone THS, so I'm pumped to say the least.

Is there an opening act tonight? Yes - Wintersleep. The below is text from an email the Beacon sent out yesterday..... "Doors to the theater open at 7:00pm. Wintersleep will open the show at approximately 8:00pm*. After a brief intermission, The Hold Steady will take the stage. As always, we suggest that you arrive early and travel light. Enjoy the show! 5. What will the ushers do when the front of the stage becomes packed with clever kids. That will be fun to watch. They are used to asking stoned hippies to sit down. This will be interesting. I really hope this happens. If it does, I really REALLY hope there is footage of it. I am definitely going to need a scene report on this one. The assigned seating just seems like it would turn the show into something totally different, unless it was an acoustic set. Clearly it isn't though, based on pictures I've seen. But different doesn't necessarily mean bad. Brendan: "The dream has been realized. A near-sold out crowd -thousands- in the balcony, doing the whoa-ohs to 'Chips Ahoy'."

OK, just got back from the show. Great performance by the band, sound was surprisingly lousy from where I was, Orchestra Left 7th row, may have been better from the center. I'd be interested in hearing from those in the balcony.
Regarding the venue, the whole THS experience is meant to be shared, hugged, sweated and rubbed onto each other. It was bizarre to see the diehards raving it up in front of seats. The ushers were pretty adamant about keeping the aisles clear. Periodically, the aisle next to me became somewhat blocked. There was an older couple next to me and another even older couple in back of them, both couples on the aisle. The one in back kept chasing down the ushers to get people to sit down and stop blocking their view. Neither couple stood for more than a few songs or appeared to be having much fun. Not sure what attracted them to this show, or what they had heard about the band.
I didn't keep a setlist, I'm sure someone will follow up with it. I thought the band live sound has def. tightened up since I last saw them at MHOW in Brooklyn back in the spring. Steve and Dan sound great! Craig is in top form, really commanded the big stage. He's becoming one of the top frontmen in rock, in my opinion! Appeared to be having a ball, as always.
A great show, and I can't wait until they unleash their fury in a local bar soon! I'll feel more right.

yeah, i just got home too. i loved this show for all the old stuff they played but the venue (gorgeous as it is) sucked. i was one of those people trying to inch my way up the aisle, only to be chased back every 5 minutes by an usher. i'm sorry, at a hold steady show i want to jump around with people, shout with people, sweat on people and enjoy it in a giant mass of other fans. seats SUCK. i was alternately SO happy and SO sad tonight. the hold steady is one one of the only reasons i will step outside of myself and let go....i am an insular person, a person who does not easily "hang" with stangers...except at a THS show. this was my 7th. and i go to them all solo. and i was so sad that i couldn't bounce around with people who love them as much as i do, couldn't connect with people who feel similar connections with the fucking most awesome band ever. that being said, they fucking rocked. they played like, what, 3 songs from HIW? and the rest was good old THS, lots from AKM and SS and BAGIA....sigh. fucking great.

Just got back from show. Had to sit in hospital all day with my wife, so wasn't sure of going to the show until 5pm. Got a last minute tix from the box office in 4th row center!!!!!
The review is : HO-LY CR-AP! The sound was great! But too loud. Couldn't hear the vocals. But sure heard the guitars! In keeping with a Mountain or Stooges show from years ago, everything in the first 10 rows was mowed and shreaded! Did I say it was loud? Amazing that 3 guitars (2 1/2?) can master that kind of seamless syncopation at such volume. Sat in front of the new guy's amp (vintage Marshall), so got all the cords very clear. He has interesting phrasing - reminiscent of Jimmy Page.
Craig was in rare form. A real act. Made the most of the big stage. The band has come a Long way with this tour. I've always maintained that there's a bit of 'Phil Waits meets Iggy Pop' to the music, and you could sure hear it tonite.
The crowd was very into it. Some guy in my row was n-th degree bombed, and the lady next to him must have kicked him in the kahoonies to keep him quiet. Really deserved it. Crowd stood thru the whole show. Folks in front of me seemed to be amazed that the crowd was singing the lyrics, and were looking around at the balcony, etc, thru the show. There was a fight in the lobby just before the encore break - unreal for a THS crowd. Maybe there is tooo much boozing?
The renovation of the Beacon is beautiful.
I'm sure we'll get the set list soon. Were the tapers active???
