Seems like the calendar is pretty clear for THS after the show in NYC next Friday. Anybody know why? Recording an album? Taking a break? Tad's studio/home base is NYC, right?
All I can say is I'm just back from Clevo HOB last night and the band has never seemed fresher, tighter, or more joyous. I was lucky enough to see the sound check too, and it seemed at all points like the chemistry in the band is really great.
It really sucked leaving a show I wanted to go on forever and not knowing when of if I'd be seeing the greatest show on earth again.

hopefully the boring Sydney crowd didn't put them off of touring I seriously doubt it. One bad night isn't going to make them give it all up. Also Craig has said he loved it last time he was here in Britain.

A new album would be great, but the output has been pretty weak since FN left.

No more shows because Tad needs to concentrate on the Knicks playoffs.

Yeah I would reckon that they'd be better off waiting til they've got a really great album. And maybe Craig could try some new stories and characters - as much as I like all the self-referencing, I feel he might have some other stories to tell us. Though who knows - only they can write the album.

bocephus - You make some good points, but I think it has more to do with FN than you let on. I think if you ask anyone who listens to The Steady how many times they have listened to Boys & Girls and Stay Posi and the numbers will be off the charts. Same question for Heaven and at least for me, that number is less than 25. Thats all I'm saying. I dont think there is a right answer, I just think this band's best days are behind them, especially with the live show. Sure, a wall of sound is fun but I for one would love to hear Sapphire or First Night or any number of anthems FN brought his presence to.

Wouldn't have to be Franz (seems unlikely) but they risk getting a little one dimensional without them.

A week ago right now I was in the front row and it ruled. You guys who think they aren't at the top of their game...I just can't sympathize. This is just what we wanted.

My first show was November 2008 @ The Tabernacle with the Drive-By Truckers... I remember the shear energy they had on stage, especially with Franz jumping up and down and singing. The next show I saw was last May (sans Franz) and I have to admit, it was a different energy.
Maybe I was just blown away by the first show because it was, well, my first THS show. Or maybe it was because of Franz. I like hearing the interplay between instruments. When I play music, I love having different instruments around me, something besides the typical guitar-drums-bass-vocals routine.
To say that the band isn't as good, or aren't "into it" like they used to be is absolutely the wrong way to describe it. I saw them play to a large crowd in Atlanta, a smaller crowd in Birmingham, and even an acoustic set in NYC... The energy and the appreciation for what they're doing is only growing every time it seems. I have yet to see them in a setting where they weren't giving it their all, in whatever way possible.
That being said, I would LOVE to see a more prominent presence from the keys in the future, but I (and the rest of us) will survive without, I'm thinking.

that stone pony show was just unreal My first and still my favorite. I wish there was a recording. Yes, I miss the keys. I wish they had horns too. But, T5 was a great, great show. Positive energy and great sound. The band still has all of their joy. What will tell is the next album. If it is a guitar hero disc, then the sound and direction is changing. But, if like HIW, it is fully produced, the band is not getting away from what got them here.

My first time seeing them was in Salt Lake in 09. Great show, with Franz. The most recent time I have seen them is also in Salt Lake last year, without Franz. To me there is a difference in energy but its just my opinion. The Best show I have seen is the First Ave show on the Fourth of July 2010. But I'm not going to add that to the conversation because that show was from another universe. Great memories. I guess thats what music is all about.

One hint as to when there will be shows again is what CF said at T5.
He talked about how great the last decade was for him and that most of us will not see him again until after he turns 40.
So, it looks like no shows, at least for NYC, until after the summer.
