Alright kids- new year, new thread.
I checked out Hard Working Americans last night- Todd Snider + jam band really works. Also good for middle-aged guys with beards- I fit right in.
Also got to see the Pixies do a Free at Noon show on Friday in Philly. I can't think of a better way to spend my lunch hour (although I wish I had eaten something too).

My year so far:
Jan 3. Played a show at boot and saddle in south Philly. First time there and loved it despite the horribly overpriced food. Great sounding room, though, and there were a lot of people despite there being a ton of snow and ice on the ground. Success!
Jan 10. Played the same venue with my other band. We did alright, even though I messed up our GBV cover. The other local that played, Dreambook, was super good.
Jan 14. Played with yuck and alvvays. Yuck were super nice but they went on really late and I was tired. I'd never heard alvvays before but I really liked them. Cool poppy shoegaze stuff. Thumbs up!
Jan 24. Pixies free at noon! They did a cool stripped down set with violin instead of bass. About half new songs and half old. I was super into it. Wish I could own a recording of them playing with that arrangement.

Saw Phosporescent 1/30. Eh. I'd kind of rather listen to the album. They got all jam-band like at times which I'm really not a fan of and really didn't expect, although I'm not familiar with their back catalog, so maybe that's what they were like before John Agnello produced them.
Little jealous of Phils' having see Todd Snyder, even though "jam band" was mentioned in the description. I'll keep an ear out for hiim/them to come through Pgh.

Took my two daughters to a gig in Bristol tonight - We Are the In Crowd.
Not really my thing, but I suppose they were quite good.
The venue (The Fleece) was good - I kept picturing THS there.
Scarily, 99% of the audience looked under 20, and the band's lead singer looked younger than both of my daughters.
For the first time in my life, the band was too loud.....I never thought it'd come to this.

i went to see the lawrence arms and the copyrights a few nights ago. both bands were excellent. the crowd got pretty dumb during TLA. lots of meatheads. i don't understand why that type of crowd turns out to see a band that writes albums about books

By maybe do you mean definitely? By maybe I mean most likely, but if haven't bought a ticket yet lol Cory, Mrs. Phils_fan and I all made it to the show- good as always, heavy on the new album, but a minimal encore apparently due to an 11 PM curfew.

My gig diary started tonight with an underwhelming Manic Street Preachers gig in Cardiff. Hopefully Wolverhampton next Sunday then Brixton the following Friday and Saturday will restore my faith. If not May has THS in Manchester followed by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion on a boat (Bristol Thekla) and the Ginger Wildheart assisted Courtney Love in Bristol Academy. Which is grand.

Would love to dude but I didn't manage to get a ticket for Bush Hall so I'll have to make do with the Manchester show.

I don't know how many times I listened today to "In Reverse" by The War On Drugs. Great song, great album (Lost In The Dream). Will see them in Hamburg on Friday.

went to see Against Me! last tuesday, first time seeing them with the new lineup. they sounded great, played a really good mix of songs from all of their albums, and mentioned that they're recording a live album. i'm really looking forward to hearing that.
friday night i went to a pretty sweet house show in west philly. i went for Worriers, who were excellent, but also got to hear some great bands i wasn't familiar with. it's nice when that works out.
