Meat Loaf (anyone heard the new album?) I love Meat Loaf, but mostly just for Bat Out of Hell. I don't think he's been able to touch that peak. Here's another one worth adding: The Trouble With Sweeney.

My college's radio station just hosted a battle of the bands with them headlining! Incedible stuff.

i think there's a huge difference between being "underrated" and famous.

The Wildhearts. They are so much more than the bands they get lumped in with. Ginger has written some top to toe 5 star classics in his time. Epic metal opus or 3 minute pop song they have some of the best. Their back catalogue is a treasure trove of dirty pop rock and I love them.

I really liked Terrorvision. A lot. But even I can see they were flawed to the point of never really having a chance of the big big time. They were just too goofy. Therapy? were frickin' awesome. Their cover of Diane by Husker Du is off the chart. Infernal Love is an under rated record for sure but the early shit Babyteeth, Nurse, Screamager, Femtex, Short Sharp Shock EP, Turn, Hide The Knives, their cover of CC Rider, . I loved that band.

pj harvey ted leo & the pharmacists (one has to see them live, i think. the songs benefit from getting a bit roughed-up.)

Unbelievable that this is their debut album. Caffeine Bomb was added to the rerelease. And it improved on a perfect album. Spin 'My Baby Is A Headfuck' (with Mick Ronson on slide guitar) segueing into Suckerpunch and tell me that's not rock and roll how it's meant to be played.

Wait I want to clarify something:
When you guys say "underrated" do you mean just that not a lot of people listen to them, or that most people who know them don't like them? Because if it's the former then I would like to throw in my best friends shitty high school metal band.
I really just don't like the terms overrated and underrated. Too sticky, too overused, too abused. But whatever. I'll bite anyhow.
Bands I catch shit for liking by most people, assuming they know who I'm talking about/haven't forgotten who they are: 1. Barenaked Ladies 2. Bomb the Music Industry! 3. Dream Theater 4. Blink 182 5. 30 Seconds to Motherfucking Mars

ah Barenaked Ladies.... the same album that has 'If i had a million dollars' has The Flag, a harrowing song about domestic abuse. and the albums keep getting darker love them
as for what this thread is about.... i dunno. there's some great Aussie bands that are barely loved in their hometown, so any attention is good

Because if it's the former then I would like to throw in my best friends shitty high school metal band. i think of bands that don't get the credit i think i deserve. bands like harvey danger and eels had huge hits and a lot of people sort of know who they are, but in my ideal world they'd be respected for releasing intelligent, beautiful records instead of just "those bands with the hits in the 90s" the toadies too

Mountain Goats always seem to get left out of year end lists.... John Darnielle is a better lyricist then ANYONE and a damn good poet and fanfiction writer on his blog

I nominate the dB's and early Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera
I am a sucker for a pop song that slithers in my brain and will not let go
