''Lord, to be 17 forever''
It's just a shame that most people my age don't appreciate this type of music.

we're old here, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze. I was reading along and thought, did she just quote John Denver? Yes, she did. Thanks for making my grayish day brighter. I am 26.

I'll be turning 50 this year. I'd been trying to figure out what to do for my birthday. It turns out I'll be in Memphis that day seeing The Hold Steady. I'll be with my boy, he's 17. We've seen about 25 shows together over the last 3 years. It couldn't be any better (it could be a little better is some of you scenesters show up to buy me beer). Probably can't make it to that show, now matter how much I might want to. Will toast to you on your birthday from a distance. XO WD

I got into THS in 05, right before BaGIA, so I was 19 or 20. I'm 24 now, 25 coming up soon. And Hank, that is awesome. I hope to share shows with my (yet to be born) kids. Music had a profound effect on my life at an early age, and I am forever grateful to my Dad for taking me to many of my first shows.

20 years old, fan since 16.
this thread probably won't tell us a lot though because the age of the average THS fan, and the age of the average THS fan who reads the message boards are, i imagine, significantly different.

I'll be 37 in August. Got into them when Separation Sunday came out, how long ago was that? I always thought most of their fans would be in their mid-thirties for no other reason than so many of their references seem to resonate with people at a certain age. Bones Brigade videos? Man, we used to watch those videos over and over at night and ride a quarter-pipe in the day (well, I mostly fell). Ybor City? Growing up 20 minutes north of Ybor, it really was a sketchy scene in the 80s. I remember me and a friend of mine riding our skateboards down 7th avenue and a dirty old man asking us if we liked to party and if we wanted to come back to his house. The only band I've seen more than THS is Seven Seconds who used to go to St. Pete back in the day.
Man, I done got old. Time to go back to work. Terry

I'm 40.
I was actually a bit of a Lifter Puller fan back in the mid-to-late '90s, and when I heard Finn and Kubler had started a new band in 2004, I bought Almost Killed Me without hesitation.

I'm 28, I first heard THS maybe 3 years ago? My boyfriend, who is always at the shows with me (except he stays at the back and I prefer being right at the front), is 33.

I was about 24 when I was handed a copy of AKM. I turned 30 this past December and the last thing I remember about my party was an angry bouncer reaching into the DJ booth I had commandeered to pull the plug on "Party Pit".

25, got into them about 3 years ago so i'm both young enough to still do lots of the stuff they write about and old enough to be annoyed that my skinny jeans don't fit and some of my friends are getting married
the band feels pitched at older people then me, though... lots of references to hardcore stuff from before my time

I'm 16 now, and although it doesn't feel like it, I must have got into them when I was 13! Holy cow! These 3 years have gone way too fast... I heard Separation Sunday, and liked most of it, then got Boys & Girls In America because Stuck Between Stations was so awesome. I liked BAGIA, then I realised how amazing Separation Sunday was, then fell in love with BAGIA, got AKM and hated it, then slowly learned to love it. Next, heard SP on MySpace and hated it, listened to it again and liked bits of it, then fell in love with it. Heaven Is Whenever had me in one listen. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, and why I'm even saying this on this thread, but there we go Note to self: Stop rambling! PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROGER! someone i can legitamately call kid. YES!!!

I think I've got you all beat: I'll be 51 next month! I listened to Separation Sunday (what was that? 6 years ago?) and I was hooked. I've seen every show in LA since then. I haven't been more blown away by a live band since I saw Springsteen at a small college gym during the Born To Run tour!!!! Can't wait to see them tonight at The El Rey! This old man is going to stay up late!!

Didn't know there were that many younger THS fans. I am 33 (forever) and first got into or heard THS about 3 weeks before Separation Sunday came out, but most of the shows I've been too the crowd is usually 30's and up for an average age I would say

35 in Nov '08 when I accidentally discovered THS when I came out to see DBT. The Hold Steady and the overall scene dropped my jaw. The fans around me at the front of the stage ranged from 21 to 55. Almost everyone I talked to was following the Rock and Roll Means Well tour around - and everyone was so damn positive! I was so jealous that I had been missing out! I called off work the next day and drove 3 hours to Chicago without a ticket for the sold out show. Same people (obviously) were all there. I've been way too fan-boy obsessed for my age ever since! That show, and specifically THS kicked me out of my growing complacency, I had started to forget/take for granted the power of rock and roll and the regenerative magic of being at the show and getting (figuratively) touched by people you don't even know -yo.
