permit me to go insane... this will not be a calm post. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THE HOLD STEADY ARE TRYING TO KILL ME! I AM KEEPING THE SETLIST AS EVIDENCE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER! THEY PLAYED KNUCKLES, ADDERALL, CHILLOUT TENT, EXPLODE AND ARMS AND HEARTS! i should've known this show was gonna go off. however, i did not know that any of this was going to happen and, of course, i almost exploded. i am bruised all over. i am so freaking happy right now. fuck me. AMAAAAAAAAZING!!!!!!! thank you everyone. everyone! craig finn must also never say my name on stage again because when he does i come very close to bursting into flames and running around the room screaming "yayayayayayayayay!" i am stunned. don't let me explode... ;D Wish I'd been there. Sounds absolutely amazing... Arms & Hearts is possibly the best song recorded in the BaGIA sessions... I am yet to get "...explode" I think, and I've never seen them do Chillout Tent although once I asked Franz to add it when he was writing out the set... fn: "any requests?" me: "chillout tent" fn: "ah." or something... Y'know what I think would slot in really well with the more epic Stay Positive tracks? TEENAGE LIBERATION.

I agree, most overrated band since Led Zeppelin *runs and hides* Hiding from the wrath of THE KOOB probably... TGA remind me of the way I used to like Something Corporate when I was about 16. It's just good rock music. The Killers third album is absolutely dreadful, it's going for that 80s tinted revival sound (but not in a Rapture-type way), in a Tears For Fears type way and ending up not being any good at it. They're a totally weird band in terms of dynamic... I think Sam's Town suits the band more but Brandon Flowers less... the third album seems to suit Brandon more and the band less... Hot Fuss was a bit of a masterpiece though, struck the balance right away.

Yeah, I really dig the first album - agree that a lot of it sounds pretty similar and the "Subterranean Homesick Blues" references are a little cringeworthy but a totally solid album. Quite like The '59 Sound too, but prefer the EP to all of 'em!

Just can't get over this gig. Third time I've seen 'em in Manchester, and this was definitely the best... been nursing sore calves from all the jumping... I've got a hacking cough (but no bandaged hands) and my ribs ache when I cough... it's like a shot in the arm of positivity and joy. Every time they come over I get my booster shot. Can't wait til I can see 'em again.
It was great to see the US out in full force - sorry I didn't make it to Big Hands as planned, I had one of the weirdest situations ever to sort out: pondering missing Christmas entirely to go and play some shows in Tbilisi... (!)

well, really how good would it be? not the quality or content but for the band. it would just cost more money than its worth. it would be amazing for us but other than a few thousand people, who would watch it? ...just looking out for the band. hey, well what about Dig? I know a whole load of people who'd definitely watch this. It doesn't have to be the fact it's the Hold Steady does it, it has to be the fact that it's a documentary about a hard working rock band on the road... whether you're familiar with THS or not doesn't matter...

that opening four songs were absolutely breathless.
Koob's guitar spin was my highlight though - I can take about an entire Hold Steady set of pure joy, but that was the moment that pushed me over the edge... it was like "koob is back! thank fuck!" before that I was marvelling at how tight the show was and how packed with hits it was and how much Craig was enjoying himself... Bobby and Koob were jamming little breaks and stuff all night without batting an eyelid - you could see what touring with DBT had done for them.... Franz was wonderful as always, even if he seemed a little worried about the speed of Chips Ahoy! And I still love the way Galen stays and soaks up the atmosphere right at the end as Koob's guitar loops echo out around the building... Gayrilla was inspired. Craig's baseball swing during You Can Make Him Like You was priceless. Oh, and POSITIVE JAM into STUCK BETWEEN STATIONS. Wow.
I also digged koob throwing the lick from "waterfall" by the stone roses into the breakdown during ...Hoodrat.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

I remember something about Bobby fixing a truck?!
I couldn't wait to see it. I bet it's to do with the publicity schedule for Stay Positive, you don't really want anybody's attention taken from the release of the best rock album of the year...
I have a sneaking suspicion it'll surface with some sort of live dvd/album. Seems logical after four albums.

Peope who want to stand still at gigs aren't anyone's enemy. They just want to watch the band without having either their own or someone else's beer spilled down them. I can sympathise with that. They might be just as loyal fans as you, and they might be complaining that their evening was ruined ... Completely agree with that. People have different ways of experiencing gigs, it seems blindingly obvious that the argument here is ultimately pointless - some people stand, some people dance. It seems that there were more of the former last night, that's all. I wouldn't worry about it gb... just because we hear about the good times everybody has at THS gigs doesn't mean every show is going to be watched by 800 fist-pumpin' beer spillin' wrecking machines...

I'd take
Neil Young - Harvest Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps Neil Young - Sleeps With Angels Neil Young - Zuma Bob Dylan/The Band - Before The Flood The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous
I'd take The Rotter's Club by Jonathan Coe to read because it's a great story.
I'd take a winnebago.

saw him at the ruby lounge in manchester.
well, I say saw. I mean I sat in a corner and listened. The sight lines at the venue are absolutely dreadful.
couldn't help but feel a bit underwhelmed by it all, i'm a passing fan, I don't own any of his albums but everybody else in my band knows every word to every song or so it seems... I really liked him but thought he'd have been much better with a band!

I went to their show at Liverpool Carling Academy 2 last year on my own and had the best time ever. The crowd weren't particularly wild, but it was great. If that had been me last night I would have just shut myself off from the people standing still and rocked out to my own private viewing. I love it when that happens sometimes.

I'm the drummer vote, but am thinking about also learning the Harmonica - new year's resolution? So do this again in a year and maybe I'll vote for that one *hi-fives caz for being a drummer I can't read music... but I've been playing drums since 1997. I'm nowhere near as good as I should be, I still have my first kit which has been everywhere with me. I don't practice because I have no room, my only practice is in front of crowds of people at shows! Second instrument is my voice. I can pick out harmonies and stuff which always seems to be useful. Third is keys, specifically organ really. I can't play the piano because my left hand doesn't want to do all the complicated things my brain wants it to. I'm most definitely not proficient. Fourth is guitar, which I play because it's easy to find space to practice it. I learned it from watching people play it from behind a drumkit for so many years. I'm most definitely not proficient. I can also make sounds out of harmonica and bass but I couldn't play them in a band.

Big Hands sounds good to me. I see the gig is being upgraded to the Academy 1 - is that a much bigger venue. The tickets still valid? Yes - I thought it was always at Academy 1? Might have something to do with the fact they've sold Academy 2 out twice in a row already. Anyway, Big Hands is easy to find, easy to get along with and is close to foodage, has a decent jukebox and has cool staff: we had the listening party for Stay Positive there and EASILY got the CD played all the way through. If anybody wanted to, there is probably lunch/dinner to be had at The Deaf Institute (Trof), which isn't far away at all either. Not more than a couple of blocks. www.thedeafinstitute.co.uk/

I wish the UK got more snow. We had a snow today today, off school and the like. It rained at about 9am and washed it all away. Apparently schools aren't allowed to clear the snow because if they do and it melts and turns into water and the water freezes overnight and causes ice and then somebody slips on it it's the fault of whoever cleared the snow*.
Chaos is guaranteed in the UK - breezes above 10mph are "gale force", a half-inch of hail is "heavy snow", anything above 12C is a "heatwave", anything below 12C is a "cold snap". Christ, what a nation of utter fannies. It really really annoys me, my local bank has shut two hours early because of "snow", so when I arrived at 3pm having walked 3 miles to it to cash my paycheque (that is not only late but should have been paid directly into my account) to find the bank closed I wasn't best pleased. Snow. Just deal with it!
*I might have made that up.
