Also it'll be released on Record Store Day with Criminal Fingers!
Quote from the article:
This is one of the most popular songs in Westeros, beloved by nobles and commoners alike, sung at taverns and feasts and etc. We wanted our rendition to be bawdy and a little sloppy — drunken musicians getting up on the table and jamming while the rowdy party continues around them. There was no one better for the job than the Hold Steady, and the song they delivered has been stuck in our heads for the last four weeks.” “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” is about a bear that goes to the fair and woos a maiden who was hoping for a knight. We are sworn to secrecy in regards to how the song will be used, though it’s not where readers of Martin’s novels might suspect. The Hold Steady will release a 7″ record on April 20 for Record Store Day that will include “The Bear and Maiden Fair” and the song “Criminal Fingers.”

There is no understating my excitement for both THS being in Game of Thrones and that's it's going to be released as a single on Record Store Day!
This is perfect in so many ways.

TOO AMAZING for words. Can't believe I'm overseas for RSD this year; can't imagine getting my hands on this directly. Still, damn

I'm very curious how this is going to sound. Is it bad that I'm hoping for a lute solo?

I did the artwork with Tad... seems like not too many blogs picked up the cover image so here it is. i.imgur.com/i86UaUi.jpg Spoiler, their cover of "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" is very upbeat, no lute solo. It's awesome.

The cover looks great. I hope I'm able to pick up a copy on RSD.

EXCITEMENT!!! Only problem is, as someone's already mentioned, record store day is hard work in some places. Does anyone know where I'd be able to get this in the UK on RSD? Or if I could order it?

There is SUPPOSED to be no way to get the records outside of buying them at participating retailers. I believe in the past stores caught taking internet orders / pre orders or saving for ebay either don't receive their copies or get cut out of participation in RSD. However they always do end up on ebay at a premium afterwords. It's unfortunate but getting people in to record stores is the goal and it gets them in there whether they are re-selling or getting a prized possession.

Seriously. Obviously I'm really excited about the Game Of Thrones song, but Criminal Fingers. I've always felt like no one here cared about it, it's only ever mentioned by me... It was played a couple of times live around the Heaven is Whenever release. It's such a great song. Never thought they'd release it. Very excited for a studio version, interested to see how much it's changed in 2-3 years.

Great job by Ben/Tad on the artwork...
What's the best quality version of Criminal Fingers floating around? There's a poor-quality version from the April 2010 HiW tour Harrisburg show on youtube that leaves alot to be desired...
Also, doctoracula... c'mon dude! Record Store Day kicks ass!!! Anything to support independent shops in this day of iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc is awesome as far as I'm concerned...

This is the best recording out there. It's from the same show. theholdsteady.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=steady&action=display&thread=2455I read somewhere that Criminal Fingers is actually the A-side, despite all the press pumping this weird Game of Thrones song.

Anything to support independent shops in this day of iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc is awesome as far as I'm concerned... going to record stores is great. i do it at least once a week, and i don't need overpriced collector's items to get me to do it. RSD benefits ebay flippers more than anyone, and it encourages independent shop owners to jack up prices, sell items to the highest bidder in person, or simply hold onto the records to sell on ebay themselves. it may've started with good intentions but it's become a cynical, depressing thing that i feel has little to nothing to do with actual music.

As something of a vagabond, physical music collections aren't actually feasible for me. I will probably never hear either of these recordings (unless the Bear song ends up on the show at some point, in which case I can probably find it, but I honestly don't care about that one because it's not Craig lyrics, which are the big draw for me).
TL;DR WAHHHHH WANT

Thanx for the link, Nowah - great recording... Interesting take on it... but I still think the good outweighs the bad. And the fact that there's a secondary market for RSD items is not exclusive to RSD... it happens with any coveted piece of merchandise now. Also, unrelated... any idea who the dudes in the most recent THS facebook pic are?

it does happen with any piece of coveted merchandise, so maybe they shouldn't make something deliberately that exact thing? every year RSD seems more about marketing and publicity than music.

Fair enough. I agree it's tradeoff between publicity and business for record stores vs. the crappiness of second-hand sellers making profit... but I think the latter wins and is more important.

Agree 100%. If people would've continued to support independent record stores over the past decade instead of doing all of their shopping on Amazon, Spotify, iTunes, etc., maybe we wouldn't need a day dedicated to helping save those stores now. As it is, we oldheads who've stayed loyal all these years now get to feud with young hipsters over that rare single we wanted. Our record store only got two copies, and the young hipsters made it there first because hey, we're adults and we have jobs and couldn't take the day off to wait in line. Now our only option is to buy it at a much higher price on ebay which A) we probably don't have the cash to shell out because again, we're adults with adult responsibilities and B) that won't benefit any record store, band, or music in general anyway. But I'm not bitter or anything.
