And lest you think I'm making this up, if our girl were born in '77, and her parents named her after the hurricane she was conceived in during the prior fall, anyone want to guess what the name of the hurricane was in that year?

also, if we're talking timelines, 1977 and 1994 were pretty huge years for punk rock. METAPHORS!

You know why I fucking LOVE CF? Check this. If Holly was born in '77, the year of Bat Out of Hell and In Color (both name-dropped on HIW, and probably the greatest year in rock, as catalogued on SP), she'd have been 17 in '94 (Crooked Rain, at least) and 33 in 2010 (when she died?). Which is why the eulogy on WCGT has early 90's references-- its everything a 17 yo girl could and would be spinning in 1994. And CF is remembering the innocent bed-room door closed girl before she went down to the camps and fell. First Night, anyone? What other '93-'94 references are on this album? Music, film, books? God damn, reading that makes me so wildly excited! And lest you think I'm making this up, if our girl were born in '77, and her parents named her after the hurricane she was conceived in during the prior fall, anyone want to guess what the name of the hurricane was in that year? Then my mind was fucking blown.

in "the smidge": "at first it felt like faith, then it felt just like the void" is a reference to the best hardcore split ever i just realized this today and started freaking out in the car This and the Holly timeline have me flipping out. Playing that split right now.

"Craig, was that a reference to the Faith/Void split?" Well, probably not my favorite moment (getting tattooed by John Reis, recording slide guitar in the woods, hearing some of the songs for the first time), but definitely the funniest lyrical moment.

That's the one. There may be a D4 reference, but I haven't spotted it yet.

Just to add to all of the Husker Du business, as tangled as it already is, they actually also have a song called "Do You Remember?" It's not very well known, but is on a reissue of one of the first two records, or something. Curiouser and curiouser.

I loved WCGT the first time I heard the live versions just because the WCGT lines really hit me emotionally in a nostalgic way remembering my own experiences long ago of sitting in bedrooms as a teenager with the door shut discovering music with other people. I was never sure if it fit in with the "storyline" or if it was simple nostalgia. But now with this whole timeline, and thinking of it as a eulogy, and the production in the background on the song...holy shit is it hitting me hard emotionally thinking about this girl in the context of Holly or some similar character in more innocent times. Wow.

Literally born into the only songs that everybody finally sings along. B1, C9.
Nicely played, Ben (jesse being the same girl as in certain songs).
Beautiful art. And yes, a gift.

thanks! Barely Breathing is a Duncan Sheik song is the 'Ring ring goes the telephone' a Lady Gaga ref? 'the struggle still feels Wonderful Tonight' - Eric Clapton dunno if the scensters = vampires thing comes from the Arctic Monkeys 'All You People Are Vampires' or if it's just an old thing (like Warhol's Dracula association) metro guys = Metrosexuals. guys who primp and moisturize and stuff. haven't heard the phrase in a bit 'you might feel a slight discomfort' seems to echo 'you might feel a little pinprick' in Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb Now you're just pushing it. Besides the metro thing.

Wait wait wait.....are Holly and Jess the same person? That's what I was thinking. There's never been a Hurricane Jessica, so how can she be named after one? But then, that wouldn't work with, 'her parents named her Halleluiah'. I don't understand.

So is there a significant connection between 40 bucks and We Can Get Together or is the "pure and simple love" line just referencing for the sake of referencing? Also, the way the backing vocals blend from We Can Get Together in to Hurricane J suggest some sort of connection. It reminds me of when Tad was talking about this album being inspired by soundtracks. That transition feels like a scene change in one continuous story.
