heh, yeah, i guess million dead didn't really get noticed outside of britain due to overwhelming mediocrity. they were one of those bands who bring out a decent ep and get everyone excited and then follow it up with a depressingly poor album. hundred reasons, anyone? crackout? cooper temple clause? i could go on all day.
the karate cover on the b-side to their second single was kind of embarrassing, too. *shudders*

i think their first album is way better. Agreed. '59 Sound kind or annoys me, largely because of the lyrics.

Gaslight Anthem and Frank Turner on the same bill ... Am I the only person whose intestines tie themselves up in knots at horror at such a pairing of mediocrities?

I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but I think I may have found the jolt to the system I needed to get through the winter...

Ok, I just took a quick listen online and, taking my "I rarely like anything at first play" problem into account, I am not bowled over. Nice, poppy, muscular, Springsteeny. All fit. Someone earlier in this thread called them THS-lite or some such and I disagree. When THS plays a big Springsteen riff, it's clear that it's homage. They take the sound and totally repurpose it with intelligence and humor. This band seems to just want to...well, be Bruce.
Though I have a friend who is starting to listen to THS at my urging...nay, insistence...and she asked me, "How can you get past the Springsteen sound? Does that same guy always sing?" So maybe she's not getting the intelligence and humor that jumped out at me immediately with The Hold Steady.
Anyway, am I missing something with The Gaslight Anthem? Good but too earnestly derivative is my take right now.

My Big Brother did me proud this christmas. I mentioned I was starting to get into The Gaslight Anthem and for my present he got me their entire back catalog including the This Charming Man Record and Senior And The Queen EP.
I feel this year I let him down. Still I'm liking this band.

I like them for the same reason I started liking THS, they play awesome rock n roll and they smile and have fun on stage. I don't think anyone thinks they reinventing the wheel, just that they play good, sing along rock and roll with Americana lyrics.

So I saw these guys on Sunday night in Asbury Park in the arcade at Convention Hall.
They played a tight set that was fun and fast. They played a fair amount of material from the new album mixed with material from earlier recordings. At one point in the set, Fallon was doing that call and response with the band that Springsteen had done twenty years earlier and I still love to see/hear. They looked great too. White tee shirts, blue jeans, sneakers and stingy brim hats. Telecasters slung low and Jazzmasters twanging leads. The crowd loved them and kicked it up a notch for “The ’59 Sound” and “Say I Won't (Recognize)” (this song borrows from Sam Cooke’s ‘We’re Having A Party”).
I like what I read on Wikipedia about these guys…”this is what pop music would be if Springsteen hadn't listened to his producer, let The Ramones record "Hungry Heart," and launched the C.B.G.B.'ers into mega-stardom.”

Yay! A Toronto date (20-March), and a London (Ontario) date at Call the Office, which is small. Hmmm ...

I really like the latest album a lot. My only minor shudder/cringe moment, is when he references a Counting Crows song-"Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand..." I don't know the names of the songs, but that line is in the chorus of one of the Gaslight songs. I think it may be great expectations It's "High Lonesome." I actually love that part--maybe it's just because I'm a Crows fan, but I think such an open reference is endearing. I can't get enough of the new album. Very different feel from the first album/EP though, so I'm still working on those. Awesome band, I'd love to see them live.

Just a quick update for those who are thinking of going, the Birmingham gig is sold out apparently! Tickets still available for all the other UK are still available according to the band's website.
I'll throw in my 10cents on the debate; after getting 59 Sound for xmas i've grown to really love it. Ok some of the lyrics can be very Springsteen and very - i hate to say it - cheesy, but hey sometimes a cliche hear or there is good for you. Really looking forward to the live experience.
