Even though my CD shelves are overflowing, I rarely buy Live albums...
But in the last week, I've got my hands on Bowie's "Live '72 in Santa Monica" and the Clash's "Live at Shea Stadium". And I'm enjoying both, especially the Bowie.
So that got me thinking, "What else am I missing?"
So, What are your favorite Live albums?
I do own the Neil Young "Weld" and "Year of the Horse" records (both amazing)... do I also need "Live Rust"?
Are the live volumes of Dylan's Bootleg series "musts?"
The Wilco one?
The Who?
--- Sub Thread Part One: Unplugged
Also, Are their any unplugged/live acoustic albums you consider vital?
I have a couple that I really like: Neil Young "Unplugged".
X's "Unclogged".
Some live sets from the titanically gifted and dearly departed Ted Hawkins.
I also really dig the Johnny Cash / Willie Nelson "Storytellers" volume.
Nirvana.
--- Sub-Thread Part Two: DVD
Any thoughts on good Live DVD's?
I have just a few: The Pixies live acoustic at the Newport Folk Festival (yes, you read that right.)
Pink Floyd's "Live at Pompeii" (awesome, but more of a weirdo French TV rockumentary)...
The Chuck Berry "Hail, Hail, Rock and Roll" (the interviews and behind the scenes stuff on the deluxe edition are better than the "show". Drunken Jerry Lee Lewis in all his glory.)
Gil Scott-Heron, pre-crack smoking.

'the name of this band is talking heads' is a better album than 'stop making sense'. that film is magnificent, though.
five alive, 'live rust' is excellent (and much better than 'year of the horse' imo). the newest release in the archive series is an extremely worthy addition to any collection.
a couple of my favourites from the top of my head: loudon wainwright iii - career moves my morning jacket - acoustic chorale (dvd) tom waits - big time ("falling down" and "strange weather", 'nuff said) waylon jennings - waylon: live (expanded edition)

The Who – Live at Leeds is a must have IMHO, also both of the Johnny Cash prison albums are amazing. I really am not usually into live albums especially by current bands…I would prefer just to see them live. But for bands like the Who and Johnny Cash its really the only way I can hear what they sounded like live. Some others I really like are:
Led Zepplin – How the west was won. Bad Religion – Tested – it breaks my own rule but I love BR and the quality of live recording on this is top notch.

I recently upgraded to the 2 CD / 1 DVD versions of both. I also have the J. Cash "Live at Town Hall Party" DVD (live, from Compton, CA!) that the awesome Bear Family label from Germany put out.

These are three of my favorite live albums. I don't usually buy live albums, but these made their way into my collection.

NoMeansNo - Live 'N Cuddly. Hands down the greatest live album I've ever heard. The energy of these shows is undeniably apparent, and all the songs are better (or as good) as their recorded counterparts.

Ummm.
Top of my head:
Reed's ROCK AND ROLL ANIMAL
YESSONGS
JOHNNY WINTER LIVE AND...
JANE'S ADDICITION's first lp
BOC--- ON YOUR FEET OR ON YOUR KNEES
Stones--GET YOUR YA YA's
The Who--LIVE AT LEEDS
HUMBLE PIE---ROCKIN' THE FILMORE
MOTT THE HOOPLE--LIVE
Reciently, I picked up WALT MINK's, GOODNITE and except for the horrid vocals, this could very well be the rockinest live concert I've ever heard from a power trio. Too bad they didn't incorporate a good singer...
BEN FOLDS FIVE- LIVE AT WEST 54th STREET
FRANK ZAPPA's SHUT UP AND PLAY YER GUITAR. Leads solos put to studio bass and drums and keyboards. Aso, LIVE AT THE ROXY.
One double lp a buddy had,a bottleg swap meet find on Pig label of David Bowie and The Spiders. Thee most incredible live Bowie ever, hands down. The version of "The Width of a Circle" was simply amazing. The whole thing, start to finish was utter genious, especially the vocals on 'Space Oddity" BTW, if ANYone out there has this, I'd be willing to make a nice offer for a copy.
MIKE DOUGHTY's LIVE cd.
That's it that I can recall at the moment.
Oh, I'll check out the above ! Thanks, dead e !

live at leeds is my favorite live album, if not favorite album of all time.
live rust is awesome, so is weld.
i have tons of live phish, but obviously there's not a huge jam band appreesh around here, that's ok.
europe 72 is my favorite Dead live, more of the workingman's dead style and barband style than the fucking out there 25 minute dark star style.
i love live pearl jam i have a bunch of those. the album recorded at the benaroyal hall is awesome, and acoustic, and fantastic.
stop making sense and the prison albums that have already been mentioned are great.
john lee hooker live at the cafe a go-go is really awesome.
lou reed's rock n roll animal is my second fave right behind live at leeds.
for dvd's i have pearl jam at MSG and the imagine one. then springsteen in barcelona. bob dylan at the newport folk fests. led zep concerts that were released when how the west was one came out.

Everything on the album is stellar...the version of Lost In The Flood is one of my favourite live performances by any artists.

i can't begin to favorite live albums. way too hard.
but i almost never watch or enjoy concert dvds, with rare exceptions. but the springsteen Live in Barcelona DVD is AMAZING. i have been to a handful of sweaty, cathartic, transcendent, once-in-a-lifetime rock shows, but this may the only one i've seen on tv.
(also, bouncing around my apartment to the ybor city dvd is a magnificent exception)

(i dance around to my ybor dvd too... i am not ashamed). as for live albums? the who, springsteen, neil young, etc etc. there are way too many great ones to choose from. let's just say "i enjoy live albums muchly" and leave it at that. or i'll hurt my mind.

^Very good choice. Although much of it is overdubbed in the studio it's a great great album.
