Just thought it was time for a new thread here instead of lengthening the 2012. Not sure when I'll make it back out again. Hopefully the fort reno shows this summer, and Replacements reunion this fall!

Springsteen on Saturday, then off to T in The Park in July where I'll hopefully catch Frightened Rabbit, Villagers, Alt-J and Frank Turner, and Mountain Goats in October. After a slow start, this is going to be a good year

Nervosas and Vacation Friday night. all the new Vacation shit sounds so good, and the noisier live versions of old songs ruled too. i've been wanting to see Nervosas for so long, and they were even better than i expected. super tight and energetic and awesome. maybe the best 2 sets i've seen this year

i got a free ticket to see the Blake Schwarzenbach Mobile Disco Decathlon tonight. here's how it was described on the website:
Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil, Forgetters) and his emerging alter egos, Chris Lager (DJ/Producer:Forgetters,O.C.D.,Chris Lager) and O.C.D. (Rapper/Compulsive:Original Guitar Dracula, Ole Crazy Disorder, Often Cutz Deep, etc.) are coming to your town soon!
The show will feature Blake, Chris, and O.C.D. on a single stage, playing records, singing songs, spittin', mixing, and plain old storytelling. Expect some catalog. The event is modeled on the Greek "Decathlon," renowned for its rigor and mixed martial artistry. Go mobile, Go Chris Go!
thankfully, the show wasn't any of that. there was a lot of "alter ego" talk, and all of his between song banter was fucking insane, but the songs sounded great. he did 3 forgetters songs, all of which were way better than the full band recordings. he used a lot of different distortion textures and loops. also played 1 jawbreaker song and 3 covers, by springsteen, lemonheads, and third eye blind (??)

Glastonbury.
Not a vintage year.
I've enjoyed Billy Bragg and Public Enemy more than anyone headlining.

I saw Jonwayne last night. Probably the nerdiest rapper that I've ever seen successfully be angry (he has a song that mentions working at Gamestop, for instance...) on stage. Boombaptist opened for him and that was surprisingly awesome.
On the first I'm going to see Greenhouse Effect (Illogic and Blueprint). Minds of a Different Kind (friends of mine) are touring with them through Texas.
I'll be seeing Run the Jewels, which is one of those "leave your wallet at home" type crazy hip-hop shows my mother warned me about. That show is going to run: Despot -> Kool AD -> El-P -> Killer Mike -> Run the Jewels. Might be a four hour show.
Finally: I'm opening for milo on August eighth at The North Door in Austin. Safari Al and Riley Lake are going to be performing as well. Excited.

shows are fun. taylor swift last week was a total spectacle. the new songs sound great live. there were fireworks and confetti cannons and dancers and it was much more like a disney nighttime show than a rock show, but that's fine. i also love disney nighttime shows.
my band played a raucous, loud, late show on a monday night in a south philly diner. more people came out than expected. we were confident and loud and people stayed to watch us, all of which were nice.
last night i saw mikey erg play a solo set in a record store. his new songs sound great, and all those ergs songs will never, ever get old to me.

I want to like Run the Jewels way more than I do. Something about Killer Mike just doesn't do it for me I like music that I have to marinate in. Mike is very immediate. That makes his pairing with El-P nice for some people: "I want to hear Mike say that super ill shit again" and then after that play "What is this ginger talking about anyway?" It sorta gives El-P what he lacks: first-listen quality. But I definitely know what you mean about Mike. My first few listens I was in for him, but I'm actually going to be editing out his verses when I start doing deep listens to those tracks to parse El's lyrics; for that kind of listen, Mike is just superfluous.

i really really like El's shit. his production and his rhymes are so solid. and i feel like Mike is technically talented, but it just doesnt do it for me

Going to see the Magic Numbers with my two teenage daughters tomorrow night.
4th time I've seen them and they're always lovely.
Apparently they're trying out some new material doing a semi-acoustic tour of smaller venues.
Can't wait

Lovely gig at Pontardawe Arts Centre last night.
Couple of fellas called Goldheart Assembly played support - very nice guitars and harmonies, a bit like a more romantic sounding Turin Brakes. Also Michelle from the Numbers did a couple of songs in support too.
Magic Numbers played quite a long set, with a nice mix of acoustic / semi-acoustic and old / new material. Plenty of laughs, audience sing-alongs and they even threw a couple of snatches of Rhiannon into one song. A nice version of I Will be Released with the two from Goldheart Assembly as an encore completed a great evening in a beautiful venue.

One of my favorite album openers ever.

STOKED Seeing the So So Glos in SF Tuesday as well. I first saw them open for Titus Andronicus back in 2009 at Bottom of the Hill. They are one hell of a live band. Get ready to dance.
