Lovely gig at Pontardawe Arts Centre last night. Couple of fellas called Goldheart Assembly played support - very nice guitars and harmonies, a bit like a more romantic sounding Turin Brakes. Also Michelle from the Numbers did a couple of songs in support too. Magic Numbers played quite a long set, with a nice mix of acoustic / semi-acoustic and old / new material. Plenty of laughs, audience sing-alongs and they even threw a couple of snatches of Rhiannon into one song. A nice version of I Will be Released with the two from Goldheart Assembly as an encore completed a great evening in a beautiful venue. Love that band... did they play This Is a Song? One of my favorite album openers ever. Actually that was one that they didn't play ...I love that one too. I read in the local paper that they visited a nearby music shop in the day and ended up playing an impromptu mini-gig! Nice people.

Punk rock invades San Diego the next two weekends. Tonight, Titus Andronicus... next Friday, So So Glos, who I heard about through Craig's twitter earlier this year. STOKED Seeing the So So Glos in SF Tuesday as well. I first saw them open for Titus Andronicus back in 2009 at Bottom of the Hill. They are one hell of a live band. Get ready to dance. I was really disappointed with Titus last night. Stickles had his back to the audience the whole night and I couldn't help think that the majority of their songs are just average, indulgent, unmelodic punk.

I saw Titus a week ago and had the same deal with Patrick. The last time I had seen Titus they were almost transcendent, this time the band seemed exhausted and the crowd was really terrible both to the band and to each other. I remain a fan, but all shows can't be winners I suppose. I have high hopes for So So Glos though, the new album is too good and the band is gaining too much steam for enthusiasm not to be high.

I think Titus set up certain expectations with The Monitor in terms of their sound, and then went in a very different direction on Local Business, leaving the fans that had more-or-less worshiped Stickles in a confused place, resulting in confusion and a sort of vexed mild interest in the band generally.

we played with them last fall and they were pretty good, just played longer than my attention span. patrick was super nice and engaging, though the crowd didn't seem to be able to keep up with his sense of humor sometimes.
my band just went on tour so i saw a lot of shows. best bands we played with were goldmines, wildhoney, sun splitter, and rare animals

I saw Wild Nothing tonight. Torches, an LA indie band, opened. It was absolutely epic and made up for the huge disappointment from Titus the night before.

So So Glos SLAYED last night. One of the best rock shows I've seen in a while. Turned a shitty San Diego crowd at the start of the set into a mosh pit by the time the "Son of an American" chorus kicked in to close the set.

Seeing Huey Lewis & The News on 1st October. So excited. Also, I'm going to be seeing a show called C U In Court, by and about a guy who FCUK tried to sue; he took them on and won. Really looking forward to that.

Oh, and seeing Nizlopi Friday night. I'm supporting, which is huge for me, but I am even more excited about seeing them again!

Saw Temples, Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun, and the motherfucking Mountain Goats in the past week. It's been pretty sweet.
