No Greatest Hits CD should be 12 tracks long.

Is this classed as selling-out?

He sees the light at the end of the tunnel. Wants that 9th generation of Springsteens to be taken care of.

Won't they be easliy taken care of by a Superbowl performance, not a shoddy greatest hits comp.

Is this classed as selling-out? I'm sorry to say this- but yes. I believe it is.

I'm not going to judge because sometimes these things aren't completely in the artist's power. And its a greatest hits comp, not the new record. Let's call it selling out lite.

I know that most artists have no say in what singles get released, but do they have any involvement in greatest hits (in particular when there are already multiple greatest hits available for Bruce)

Perhaps I'm a delusional optimist, but I was always of the mind that Springsteen was, more or less, his own boss.
I mean, fuck. It's Springsteen. He's more or less the Pope of Rock and Roll.
Don't tell me that he had no say in this decision.

Pretty poorly selected hits too. Didn't the hold steady have some sort of target exclusive? I mean I know corporations are souless monsters but unless you make your own clothes and live in the woods everyone is making some concessions to the corporate machine. If you were hyped about the superbowl but pissed about wal-mart...I don't really get where you're coming from.

It's a 12-track comp of previously released material for people who buy two albums a year. From Wal-Mart. What's the problem? There's no unreleased thing to force committed fans to buy 12 tracks they've already got. And let's face it, he's flogged greatest hits albums that way before (I'm looking at you in particular, The Essential Bruce Springsteen). No sell out here: the sell out is when you skim people; no one's being skimmed with this. You don't care for it, you don't have to buy it.

I agree this particular record isn't hurting any of his fans and I have no real problem with him partnering with a major corporation (I work for one).
I just wonder why a guy who has made his millions as the voice of the working man and troubled observer of the dissolution of small town America got in bed with a company whose major contributions to American society are worker mistreatment and accelerating the downfall of small towns. (Oh right- they have falling prices too)
Seems to conflict with the values I thought Bruce had.

investments with maddoff?
i dont know. he's stuck to his general values pretty well all these years. it's a bummer but i'm not gonna lose sleep over it. now if the next album was an eagles style walmart release, i'd be PISSED.

I like your views on music. On this board, I almost never say these things. (I go for blood.)I've studied Bruce and I know he's very careful in determining how he is perceived. I'm torn on this. I'm torn on his upcoming Super Bowl appearance. I know how the business works and I understand "the man" needs to get paid. I will hold faith that Bruce is a man of his principles. I know you'll do the same. Merry Chistmas Neil.

the superbowl appearance doesnt bug me really. tom petty was on last year, right? its all the hype machine. when it comes down to it, he's gotta sell records, and magic didn't sell that well (in the U.S.) i've met Bruce's publicist. He's been with her for ages. She knows what she's doing.

If Bruce loves football, like most American's, I'm pretty sure he is honoured to play it.

I too will keep the faith. Not to form a mutual admiration society, but I hope you post more.
