Listen, i'm gonna say it, no one absolutely no one should be drinking Natty Light, the only reason one should drink Natty Light is if the store is out of Natty Ice, obviously we don't drink the Natty brand for it's fabulous taste so at least get the maximum alcohol content people, this whole Natty Light thing is bringing this board down, giving us a bad reputation, of course if the Natty Light is free by all means drink it but under no circumstances buy it... anyone who's done time on the eastern shore (Ocean City, Md) has at one point in their life scraped together change for either Natty Ice or Mickey's 32oz Hornets, ah the good old days, when a mere 99cents got you a delicious bottle of malt liquor, when for under 10 bucks you could get a few bottles and a stellar hit of acid and wait for the sun to rise the next morning...

This Natty Light you speak of, I have never heard of it, but I guess it is like: Schmidts Piels Schaeffer Rheingold. Malt Liquor is terrible stuff. Zima is terrible stuff unless you mix it with Gin in a plastic milk bottle bottle and down it with a hit of acid and wait for the sun.

Natty is a bad beer, and its not malt liquor. God I miss the Schmidt brewery.

Nothing in this life was as bad as a semi warm Rheingold on a hot NY day.

the only way i can describe natty light is as a cheaper, more watered down bud-light.

The term "cold piss in a can" is thrown around a lot these days when talking about cheap, bad beer. Natty Ice and Natty Light, though, is truly, cold piss in cans.

I was just thinking how the band must feel when they open up this site and see THS Criticism. I can imagine how I would feel if my work was being critiqued on a message board. "Did you see that fucking spreadsheet? Thats not like the spreadsheet he did last year. This one truly sucks. and can you believe he is gonna share it with Marketing? Marketing is a bunch of frat boys. Look at those columns. He didnt even highlight"

It seems a little mean spirited to have a thread dedicated solely to criticizing a band we're all supposed to really like. Not saying you can't have discussions, not saying you can't criticize, just saying an entire thread created only for that purpose seems a little harsh. Not to mention the sharp criticism of this Natty beer I keep hearing about.

There is NOTHING more helpful than examining ones own work, and even better, having those that understand your work examine it. Constructive crit is one of the forces that improves work ... Anyone that has seriously pursued art or music or writing understands the HUGE value of a thoughtful analysis from someone that is knowledgeable and respected. Of course, "that sucks" helps no one. But that is not what we are talking about here.

Yep I can see where this helps the band: "Wow that band they are playing with sucks and they have frat boys who go to those shows who play hackysack. Man have they ever sold out". Yep...I can see how that would change Koobs musical direction.

Not to mention the sharp criticism of this Natty beer I keep hearing about. If criticism had been if not appreciated, but at least tolerated, in the "normal" threads, maybe this one wouldn't have seen the light of day. To me, that is the point, that criticism should be allowed in any normal discussion, and therefore not create the need for a thread devoted to the issue. But I get a feeling that, as usual on this board, we are at a point where everyone feel so uncomfortable with this sad, sad issue (people fighthing, when we should all be living in peace and tell each other that I and you and we are awesome) that the thread needs to escalate into irony and funny pictures. After all, the most important thing is to stay positive, 24/7, and never ever engage in a debate regarding anything else the awesomeness and love. Sorry, guys. I love The Hold Steady, and think this message board has a great thing going on. But the fear of disagreements is overwhelming in here.

the thread title is misleading. it's not "this is what we dislike about the hold steady", it's "why can't we disagree about certain things and not get told to just 'keep it positive' on this board" Exactly. I understand that some people on this board may have a more personal relation to the band, and I do understand the feelings about criticism. But this is after all an arena for debate. We must be allowed to be critical. And there must be allright to disagree, both with the bands desicsions and with other board members, without being accused for wanting to tear either the board or the band down. As I said, I love the band, the music they create, the way it make me feel and everything else about The Hold Steady. And to be honest, I really don't care about them touring with DMB or if Stay Positive just was a 9/10 (compared to the line of 10/10s before it). But I do care about people having the possibilty to disagree, even at a message board like this. Not because criticism or negativity (or whatever you want to call it) is something to encourage per se, but because I think the most interesting message boards are founded on disagreements, on different opinions, and the members possibility to debate them. We don't need a dedicated trhead to criticize. But we do need the room to disagree inside ordinary threads about ordinary stuff which is naturally to discuss. (I also think it's time to apologize for eventual trouble with language. My english isn't what it used to be, and with former discussion at the old board fresh in mind, I hope you will interpret me in the best way - I don't mean to be rude or anything like it, so if my choice of words, or way of putting them together indicates anything like that, please ask me to clarify (or just blame the norwegian school system)).

Man, the Norwegian school system seems to be doing a better job of teaching english than the American one... not to mention foreign language classes in America. Most kids that take a few years of a foreign language 'round here are screwed if they have to use it later on.
Public education in America=FAIL. I love my country, just not the gov't...

Criticism is one thing. But large chunks of stuff on the DMB thread isn't criticism. It's temper tantrums.

I didnt say critiquing the music should not be allowed, after all we are a paying audience. I was just commenting on how the band must feel when they see a thread starting like that. That of course is presuming they even read here anymore. I mean they are playing with Dave Matthews now. Which leads me to my next point. This thread: THS opening for DMB Now this one also kind of leads you down the wrong path. My initial thought was it was an excited thread---kinda like--awesome check this out, festival time, get out the bongs and nitrous. But it went downhill after the schedule. Anyway--- I guess we are all critical of something at one time or another and I guess it will keep the boys on their toes having us check every fucking tab for things we do or dont like. I kinda didnt like the idea of beer NOT being thrown, but then I realized, damn, Koob has alot of equipment up there. So it made sense. People have been critical of my shoes. I have to live with it.

'What happened to the Perth date for Okkervil River? is the person running this site an idiot?' i just shrug and fix my mistake and none of you guys have ever been driven off a message board by a constant series of harassment including bad photoshops and accusations of pedophilia? i envy you seriously any artist will get critisim and they should use that to grow. if nobody is talking about you you're doing something wrong seriously THS deserve to be taken seriously and that means critiques. i'd love to see essays about the gender roles in their songs or their use of poetic tropes or whatnot. hell if i was still doing the English major thing i'd write them

If the band is hurt by their fans criticizing or critiquing their work, then they got in to the wrong business. I would hope that after five years of doing this as THS and all of their other bands, they understand how to deal with criticism. Equally, nobody's forcing them to read the boards. If they do that, it's of their own volition.
I think a lot of times on this board, we over-laud the band and forget that there are a lot of people who don't like THS. I'm sure that there have been fans of smaller bands who have been upset that their band was opening for THS the same way that some people got upset about the DMB thing. I'm sure there are DMB fans who saw the thing about THS and aren't thrilled about it either--"Dave's letting those hipsters open for him?" Ultimately, you're never going to have everyone be content with everything, but people should be able to express their dissatisfaction.
