My guess is a one month (or less) US tour. I can't see CF committing to a ton of time for this given he's got a new record in the works.
That said, I'll take what I can get!

Sadly, I have to confirm that no one has asked me if the band can come play at my house again. (although the answer will always be yes of course). I think rich' is as on the money as ever when setting out the tough economics of the music business. Only consolation - as Sterling is managing to put up a fight against the Dollar, it may ease the financial pain (a tiny bit) of travelling to the States to see what will doubtless be some special stuff. So Howard, you going over there? Got room in your carry-on?

I'll add to speculation, because that's all we can do at this point, and admittedly it's fun to speculate (when harmless) I'm expecting about 9-10 US shows 2 New York Philly DC MLPS Chicago LA Austin Atlanta/Nashville Florida Something along those lines. I also don't think Franz is back as a mainstay, I think it's these run of shows this summer and than off again doing his own thing.

Come on Tarbell! What the fuck happened to "Stay Positive"?! I am sorry if I come across too pessimistic and rain on the parade of hope and speculation - just trying to add a some balance and equilibrium to the situation. I am staying quite positive - positive I am right and positive bigger things can potentially come of this little announcement if all goes off well. You're always the voice of reason on this board, and one of the reasons I check in here regularly. I agree that the six-day buildup really built some crazy expectations. I was shocked to see the picture of Franz, and my only plan is to get to the shows, no matter where they're at. Period. I'm not expecting them to play my wedding reception or at my job or wherever is convenient for me. Sometimes good things mean hitting the road, and i'm almost always ready to do just that.

So happy
Hadn't read the boards for a while - obviously not the most positive atmosphere in recent times THS wise.
Stuck on Heaven Is Whenever on my way home from work last night cos it reminds me of it being sunny when I first heard it and at the minute, unbelievably, it's quite nice weather here in Manchester. Hadn't heard about FN coming back into the fold - when Hurricane J comes round on the record I always pine for him even though he's not on it afaik, always thought that the "if heaven's hypothetical" line is the most "Franz harmony" line I've heard CF write since he left... Great keys part on that one too.
Here's hoping Summer 2017 they see their way to the UK. What Rich said is right mind you, can't see a lengthy UK tour being profitable. I guess they'd sell out Manchester Academy 2 just about. They need to wait for Jason Isbell to come back over, his gigs were very busy this year. Imagine that for a second!
Rich, you better be doing a film of one of these shows for us in case they never all make it back here though!
Great news. So good.

tBob and I shall console ourselves with our Springsteen tickets. Indeed we will! Ps Stay Positive Del. I was shot down only a few hours ago for suggesting Franz would be "together". Dreams do come true!

Whatever happens I've flown to Atlanta for Son Volt twice and Boston once for Bob Pollard/Tommy Keene at the Paradise (Best Rock Club outsude of the Great 930 Club) so I can easily fly anywhere within reason for this! Hopefully, they'll hit the 930 and I won't have too.

If it's at all feasible from buffalo, ny to anywhere, I'm going. I'm guessing Toronto is my best hope/bet.

i still hold hope that THS's definition of 'limited number' is still different than others. A run of 30 shows in 40 days would be 'limited' by THS tour standards. I will be happy and there even if it is a half a dozen.

Rich makes some very good points on the economics of a big tour for the band - some of the gigs I went to from 2012-14 were very poorly attended. However I still think the UK remains one of the few viable areas for THS gigs outside of their home ground of NY, DC and MN.
They sold out Koko in London in Oct 2014 (capacity 1400)and also I think Academy 2 in Manchester (capacity 8-900). Not sure about the other UK dates on that tour, but I'm pretty certain those numbers are big enough for a promoter to bring them over for a short run for "special" gigs like these even without a new album and/or record company support (of which there was little for Teeth Dreams in 2014).
Forget Europe though - the Melkweg Amsterdam gig in 2014 was nowhere near sold out and was in their smaller room too (maybe 300 there). Cologne Luxor has already been mentioned at about the same. But the band have never really drawn well in Europe (excluding the UK) since Stay Positive.
In my view, a "limited" run based on places where they can still fill 800 to 1,000 capacity rooms would obviously include NY, DC and MN, but would also include a few select UK gigs, and maybe a side trip to Toronto tagged on to NY. Not sure it would extend to many more cities than that - unless there are other US venues where they drew 800+ in 2014.
Any other suggestions based on 2014 shows?

Was that Manchester show really sold out? We were about half way back and there seemed quite a lot of space around. If they sold out Koko and Manchester Academy 2, 2300 tickets at £30 a ticket that'd bring £69k before any merch sales. You're looking at £5K minimum just to get the 6 of them plus up to 4 crew over (based on £500 a head in economy), before you even look at flying gear over (unless they have some in store here), venue hire/staffing and road expenses. You'd have to say £700 a night for same 10 people using budget hotel options such as Travelodge... it'd get very tight very quick.

Yeah. I remember they maybe had some gear stored in Belfast?! When they first brought Steve over they played Manchester Academy 3 which has a variable capacity and I believe that sold out. There seemed to be room during the last show at Academy 2. Bear in mind though they also played The Ritz in Manchester with the five piece featuring Dan on keys too I think? Or am I rememberin it wrong?
Anyway - the point is that THS broke it over here in the UK on the back of BAGIA - they were on Jools Holland at least twice, including his New Year's Eve show which was a fairly big deal then. Coupled to that they were big news on the front of many music mags over here. Point being that when they were doing all this in the UK they had Franz. They even played Manchester Academy 1 on the Stay Positive tour.
I think maybe some festival dates and off festival shows in London and Manchester would be the most realistic thing to expect if the shows in the US go well, either backed by a compilation or a rarities thing in 2017/2018. One last hurrah?

It's always been hard for me to imagine how indie acts like THS make a living off touring - surely they must work in some other capacity when they're off the road...

I can absolutely confirm this is true and it is why I said earlier that to truly "tour" expenses include "wages for these nine people (including crew) who probably want to be paid at least what their current home jobs do at least".

I've heard this from other similar sized acts too. I imagine at some point THS may not have had day jobs, but at this point in their careers it makes total sense.
