Sometimes Craig says things in songs on stage that are different than what he says on the record. "Cocksucking summer," "fucking San Francisco," and "drank in your car and we fucked in your church" are some long running examples. Sometimes he adds stuff too, like "the naughty naughty northside." On the Spotify session version of Saddle Shoes he adds something about being hung from the hinges. That's the reason I thought to make this thread. They take out a whole minute of Spinners at the live shows. What is your opinion of these things? If there are other examples I'm leaving out you can talk about them too obviously.

"GET 'EM UP! GET 'EM UP" after the "Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer" part in "Constructive" has been one I've always liked, buy my favorite is the "RIGHT?!" between the "We drink and we dry up" verses. It's a great little call-and-response. If yr into bootlegs, you can hear me breathlessly shout it during the 11/13/08 show in Bloomington, IN.

I've also always like the "Right?!" from Stations and routinely sing that when listening to the song. Along with right after the "Painkillers make the pain even worse" in Chips. I thought it was always kinda cool and eerie when Craig used to do "found a body in the garbage dump" and would say that off mic during live shows while the band was going into the quiet keyboard part of Stevie Nix.

my absolute favorite lyric change is the smallest thing, but it's the repeated "lord to be 33 forever" in Steve Nix. it sounds so weird to me on the LP without it, and i always sing it when i'm singing along.

Every time I've done "RIGHT?!" during Stations Craig has smiled huge. I've never done it during Chips but now I really want to. I like shouting "MORE!" when "the band stopped playing and we howled out for more."
I remember losing it the first time I heard "the chaperone said 'God save the scene.'" Good answers so far.

Off the top of my head, the extra "There are so many nights where this is just how it happens" in Girls Like Status, rather than omitting it from the first part of the chorus, has always felt more complete to me than the recorded version.

"Song no.3 on John's last CD" has become "Song no.3 on the Sunset Tree" and last time I saw the Mountain Goats perform that said song no.3 John Darnielle added "and it almost killed me" after the "if it kills me" line

Ok...so this isn't a lyric, but it is something I have seen live the three times I have seen the band myself and in several videos. During the outro of Hornets! Hornets!, Craig and Tad always come together and play the outro lick in unison, faceing each other, and when it is over, they always give each other a high five.
Again, I have only seen them live three times now (soon to be numbers 4 and 5) but I have seen this exact thing happen all three times, dating back to my first show in Austin on the Art Brut tour (I don't remember the date).
They interact very little on stage usually (from what I've seen-am I right?). That is one of my favorite THS songs and I thought it was always kinda cool to end it in a sweet high five.
Nowah told me about the "naughty naught Northside" lyric when I met him at the Indy show last month. That is one I will never forget.

They practice that move at length during soundcheck before each show because white people have difficulty high fiving each other accurately. If they did not work so hard at this, there would be more time for the stage pyrotechnics choreography rehearsals they never seem to get to.

It's not Craig but when I saw THS last summer with Gaslight, Craig pulled Patrick Stickles onstage to sing "Cattle and the Creeping Things."
Patrick changed: "Murder is for murderers and hard drugs are for bartenders, I think I might have mentioned that before" to "Murder is for murderers and hard drugs are for bartenders, I think you might have mentioned that before. What was that 2004?"
He pointed at Craig as he said it and Craig was laughing really hard. One of my favorite live show moments. I always sing that extra line when I'm by myself.

Love that.

There is a version of Stations from 10/31/05 recorded live on the Current.
It includes a line after "But he was critically acclaimed and respected." It is "But he was petulant and spastic, but he ended up a crazy, cool Catholic." I always wondered why this was dropped from the CD version.

i still kinda wish "the only thing" had the original lyrics in each chorus. the slightly different lines in each one, "the only thing we walked to was the mailbox, the only thing we talked about's TV...the only thing we looked at was the scoreboard, the only thing we talked about's our team...she's sleeping at a storage space down by the airport, the only thing she talks about's the scene". it gave a slightly different picture of desperation each time. i get that it probably makes for a better, more memorable chorus if it's the same every time around, but i really loved those little snapshots of different scenes.
