I like his framing of HiW. Definitely a transitional record in hindsight. And if the lead single is any indication, addictive sounds like a proper adjective for what's to come... SO... we have our lead single... this is the full list of tunes either suspected or confirmed to be on the new record: I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You (confirmed) On With The Business (confirmed) The Ambassador (confirmed) Teeth Dreams (suspected) Look Alive (suspected) Wait Awhile (suspected) Records and Tapes (suspected) Runner's High (suspected) Big Cigs (suspected) Rainbow (suspected) You Gotta Move (suspected) Close, but not quite.

Finally had the chance to listen and, man, it is so so good. The bridge is the only thing I'm not 100% on at the moment but everything else is just fantastic I was sorta iffy on the bridge Best part of the song! After a few listens it sounds sort of like a mix between Stay Positive (the song) and The Weekenders. And even though I like those songs, I'm starting to realize that the hard, insisting (if that makes any sense?) THS songs never have been my favourites. Back to the bridge: I feel the same way of this song as I felt for Hurricae J when it first came out. Not all that fond of it, but digging the bridge. And hopefully it will have the same effect as Hurricane J live - I think Hurricane J is a mediocre THS song on record, but really good live.

Dude, it's awesome. I like the vocal effect and think Craig's vocals are finally mixed properly. I hereby disagree with production complaints, cosign Rich's AKM crack and look forward to what looks like an arena ready rock blast. Welcome back Liz. I just saw somebody post about an hour ago on Twitter: 'Why is it that peoples' first reactions to new recordings focus so intensely on production choices rather than content? Is that a new thing?' ... and that is a more concise way of saying what I had been thinking since this post popped up. Instead of celebrating the content of the first new song release in years, folks are splitting hairs and speculating on production issues based on a compressed 'net stream? Odd. Personally, I was mentally throwing four fingers in the air the second time I ever heard the line "running up the score and stocking up like it's World War IV" and the production and mix were about the furthest thing from the rotting grey matter between my throbbing ear drums. But, to each their own. Oh, and the guy that made that post on Twitter? Him name is Franz Nicolay. Was he talking about the new THS song, I most certainly doubt it. But it rang my bell. Is it that odd? I mean, everything else in this snog is very Hold Steady. The riffs, the intensity, the vocals. The most striking difference between this song and the rest of the catalog, is the production. And it's not just the comparative difference from the rest of the catalog. I think it's fair to say that the song has a quite distinctive production in it's own right. It's production is all over the track. That's not by any means a bad thing, but I think it's a point. And I guess that's why people focus on it. Because everything else is familiar, and the production is what sounds the most... new. And I still feel that production is most visible or noticable when a) we just have one new song to "analysze", and b we haven't heard it in the context of an album. Really, really looking forward to till the day wer have one or two more songs to discuss. Untill then, I'm getting more and more fond of the one we allready have

This song absolutely kills. Must've listened to it like 40 times or something. That didn't happen with The Bear and The Maiden Fair or the RSD tune, or Hurricane J. Finally don't miss Franz on this one, although there's a lingering hint of Leslie cab in the bridge.
Weird, coincidental timing. Totally needed an injection of THS rock positivity this week.
Is it sung from the point of view of one of the other characters in One For The Cutters? Possibly the girl? Or did someone already say that? Just that line about Christmas again.
Oh and the "tapping arm" thing is similar to the "touch-em-on-the-arm" of Joke About Jamaica. Think we're going to get more of the link between Separation Sunday - Stay Positive - Teeth Dreams. More points of view from the characters. Might it signal a change in Craig's narrative? On Separation Sunday he's an auteur, on Stay Positive he's an unreliable narrator and on Teeth Dreams it's from the centre of the situation?

It's great to see all the activity and excitement around here. I'll be starting a separate thread in a sec. But for now, just wanted to express some gratitude to all of you. We wouldn't be able to do any of this if it weren't for all the people that loved our band as much as we do. It's humbling and heartwarming. Thank you.
One last thing - the production on the record turned out EXACTLY how we intended it to. The rough mixes Nick did were so phenomenal, we ended up waiting for him to become available to mix (he had to start another record after we finished tracking). And I think Finn's vocals sound incredible. He absolutely crushed it - lyrically and his performance. The best yet. Because of that, it allowed us to do things during mixing that we weren't able to do in the past. And it rules. You're just going to have to trust me on that...

Mr K. Do a good show, yeah?
Good move waiting for Nick to finish before mixing. If the rest sounds like that it's going to be exciting. Thanks!

Tad, you sir, rule. Love this band, can't wait for the new album. And as a side note, Hurricane J is a rockin' tune.

I still think its silly to try and judge production based on a stream. I'll wait til I have a cd quality rip or (better yet) an LP to figure out if I like how it's produced or not. The stream just helps me see if I like a song or not. And I love this.

How 'bout I tell you about it at the show at MHOW? You might (not) remember me, I'm the dude with the glasses & Stay Positive tattoo that rocks out at THS shows with you and your gang in SoCal. We always have a massive night. I'll see you in the party pit up in the front as usual, hopefully.

First listen all I picked up on was a) the energy and b) the vocal effects.
Five to ten listens later and I already love it. I still don't feel like I've really processed it though. THS songs only really seem to fall into place for me once my brain contextualises them in terms of the surrounding songs on the album. Like how when a song finishes and your ipod is on shuffle and your ears expect the next song from the album and something else comes on instead and it jars a bit. I feel like I'm waiting for the next song when it ends. I don't know if that makes sense.

Wow. Somehow I completely missed this thread...
Personally, it has quelled any concerns I had about this new release. It sounds amazing and makes me extremely impatient for Teeth Dreams!
Also, it's always a treat to hear those little self-references.

I highly doubt anybody got into THS for the production, it's about the soul ! That said, it's another great time to be a Hold Steady fan, 2014 is going to be incredible.

Anyone else think that the narrator of this song is the same as the narrator from Party Pit?
