It could be my computer speakers, but the vocals kind of sound like Craig's under water. It's not your speakers. It's very unfortunate production choice that really puts a damper on the song, and probably the record for me. I am saddened.

When I saw the email I knew there'd be a thread going crazy already. I was not disappointed.

Lets not go crazy judging production by a stream. Streaming audio always sounds like compressed garbage. The song is great though. Definitely reminds me of AKM. Can't wait for this album.

"Unfortunate" doesn't begin to cover it. The guitars and drums sound great. I can't imagine anyone thinking it would be a good idea to muddy up Craig's vocals (one of the defining elements of the group) like this.

Great job on the lyrics, modehead. I think the last bit is:
(I'm assuming "tapping your arm like you wanted to cruise" is a drug reference?)
Also, on a separate note, I know nothing about music production but Craig's vocals on this song reminded me a lot of how it sounded on his solo record. But maybe that's just me.

Vocals are definitely disorienting... but that's obviously intentional... I agree that it might make more sense in the context of the entire album. The big thing to note is how much BETTER and BIGGER the sound is. Play this and then play Hurricane J and realize how thankful we should be that Nick Raskulinecz was behind the boards for this record.

(I'm assuming "tapping your arm like you wanted to cruise" is a drug reference?) If that's the lyric, I think it means "I saw you fidgeting like you wanted to leave." I'm fine with the production, you all are pretty quick to jump all over it. I think the song sounds great. I'll listen to it two more times then I'll wait for the album.

Also, I think the lyric here is:
For me it was mostly the music A crew to go to the shows with I guess I should've explained

A few seconds in I couldn't help but think how great this will sound live. Along with the new songs they played last year I have to believe there are some SUPER shows headed our way

It's a new way of thinkin' maaan.
The only parts that actually sound like The Hold Steady are Craig's constant references to previous songs and the note at the very end. Other than that, it's an entirely new sound. I don't think it's very AKM at all.

How weird. Just checked in to see if there was a release date yet and it turns out I check this the day they make the streaming of the new single live.
It's so, so LOUD. Ace.
Might I be the first to say it sounds very consciously mainstream? Guess the guys miss supporting the Stones. Before the "...but Galen deserves to be able to pay his rent, it can't all sound like it was recorded in your kitchen" brigade jump on me I think this is a GOOD THING. Lots of TV/Film sync opportunity. Gonna kill it live too, brilliant.

I'm liking the song, but not the production. I'm sure it'll kill live though.

I'm just so glad the drums and guitars sound big and warm on this new cut instead of compressed and crunchy as they did throughout HiW.

The moment I heard this song, I immediately heard and thought of "run to you" by Bryan Adams.
Did anyone else get that feeling?
Funny enough the guys also had covered that song in the past.
On a side note I too would have liked to hear craig's voice a little less "played with" and natural, but I will reserve my opinions until I hear the record in its entirety.
