He talked about how great the last decade was for him and that most of us will not see him again until after he turns 40. . Here it is on youtube:

It's interesting to hear the thoughts some of you guys have about HIW being a step backwards, or possibly the "beginning of the end". I personally really dig the album, albeit in a much different way than I dug the previous 4... but in my eyes that is a testament to the broadness of THS's musical palette, and to their willingness to evolve. Again, this is all subjective, but that's just my 2 cents. And the show I saw last summer in Santa Barbara at Velvet Jones (sans FN, as it were) was hands down the best rock and roll show I've ever been to!
One interesting thing about HIW is that I find it to be the band's most EMOTIVE album to date. Yes, all of the albums are centered around unique emotions and characters, but songs like "The Sweet Part of the City", "The Weekenders", "Barely Breathing", and "A Slight Discomfort" are as dark and moody as anything the band has ever done. Even "Hurricane J", the lead single, is (as Craig said himself in an interview) a lyrical power struggle that never really comes to any sort of resolution.

But the band is fine without keys. Tonally they're different, but what show hasn't rocked that they've played since? Honestly, it's forcing them to play differently, and that's a good thing. Doing the same thing over and over gets boring as hell.

I like all versions of The Hold Steady, we're on Mk IV as it is, it's hardly like Franz was the only change in their make-up over the years.
Personally if it's gonna continue in this vein I'd like to see someone come in on loan from another band to spice things up a little, I think sometimes from the outside the band looks in danger of settling in their comfort zone - which is fine considering what they've given us in the past but a little disappointing because we all know there must be a few truly great albums left in them...
What's Jason Isbell up to after he's finished touring his new 400 Unit record.......?

Honestly, the only time I'm really missing the keys are in the bridges of Stations and Stevie.
I think they both could be overcome by Tad and Steve doing fingerpicking parts though. I think it'd bring in a really cool dynamic. With stations, the taking out of the keyboard bridge just kind of rips some of that cathartic energy out of it though. There's needs to be something to bring it down and boost it back up.
