yeah, i just got home too. i loved this show for all the old stuff they played but the venue (gorgeous as it is) sucked. i was one of those people trying to inch my way up the aisle, only to be chased back every 5 minutes by an usher. i'm sorry, at a hold steady show i want to jump around with people, shout with people, sweat on people and enjoy it in a giant mass of other fans. seats SUCK. i was alternately SO happy and SO sad tonight. the hold steady is one one of the only reasons i will step outside of myself and let go....i am an insular person, a person who does not easily "hang" with stangers...except at a THS show. this was my 7th. and i go to them all solo. and i was so sad that i couldn't bounce around with people who love them as much as i do, couldn't connect with people who feel similar connections with the fucking most awesome band ever. that being said, they fucking rocked. they played like, what, 3 songs from HIW? and the rest was good old THS, lots from AKM and SS and BAGIA....sigh. fucking great. From your description, sounds like you were right across the aisle from me! There was a girl in Orchestra center, about row B on the left aisle, who was up and dancing the entire show, looked like she was wishing the show was anywhere else!

Hi. I'm new to the board, but not to the band. I was in the third row of the loge and had a great time. The crowd wasn't too rowdy up there, but pretty much everyone was standing and the aisles kept filling up (the security guards had to keep telling people to move). I loved the show. I thought it was a great setlist and Craig was just so engaging. I didn't have any problem hearing the vocals from where I was. I did tape it, and I'll share that as soon as I can if no one else does (haven't listened to it yet, so I don't know how it is; the very high volume might have screwed it up like it sometimes does for me).

I was in the third row of the loge, too! I thought it was a solid show, the crowd was as into it as I would have wanted, but it wasn't nearly the experience of sweating and screaming while being jammed into a mosh pit. It was the difference between seeing your favorite band put on a good show, and a reawakening.
Awesome seeing them close with Killer Parties.

yeah, bummed to miss it. i had an awesome ticket and everything. but if i had to miss a couple of THS shows in my territory, it might as well be the one where someone got beatdown and the seated show. i've been to a couple of seated THS shows; still a good show, but hard to reach those peaks, ya know?

There was a thread on here about sweaters and the boys kind of stepping up their game Well Craig was dressed in all black and played a black guitar. that didn't do it for ya? How far back they were set on the stage did suck and it didn't have a great feel initially, but I was able to get into it and have a lot of fun. Still looking forward to tomorrow night in Delaware and I'm sure I will enjoy that much more. Approximation of the setlist from memory. I have the order of the first few, the encore and slapped actress correct. Otherwise the order is off, but I think I got most of the songs. Might have missed one or two and I could have even added one in, but I don't think so: much of this out of orderConstructive Hurricane J You Can Make Him Rock Problems You gotta Dance The Swish Magazines Massive Nights Stevie Nix Sequestered Heaven Is Whenever Chips Weekenders Sweet Part Multitude of Casualties Chicago Hoodrat Stay Positive Southtown Slapped Actress Hornets Stations Killer Parties

I was in the 8th row last night. Band sounded very tight, Craig owned the stage, and the sound was blaring (my wife couldn't hear out of her right ear this morning). The seat situation was not as bad as I anticipated, but it certainly was different than sweating it out with 500 people at MHOW. That said, it seems like THS may have arrived -- there were not many empty seats that I saw in the 2,600 seat venue....
Awesome setlist -- did anyone write it out? I have a vague recollection, but a couple of double whiskey/cokes/no ice left me with a questionable reliability re; deatils....
Anyone tape it?

Last night was my first Hold Steady show. I sat dead center in the upper balcony, literally the last row. Loved the show. Craig Finn is a charismatic frontman, part Elvis Costello and part Joe Cocker, but really with a unique style. The sound was loud, but the quality was so-so. Not a big deal for me though.
My friend who was with me saw them at Terminal 5, for what it's worth he felt they're better in a bar/club type venue than they were last night.

Last night was show # twenty something for me. I was really looking forward to seeing the boys in a big time showcase. Just walking in was so cool, the Beacon really glimmering. Then they started and well…I do not know exactly what it was but something was awry. Seeing all their equipment up there in that kind of semi-circle totally turned me off. Every time Craig came out from behind the monitors it was like he was stepping from “their” space into “our” space. For me that’s the opposite of what I have always loved about THS. That feeling of “hey, were just like you, only we are up here”. The sound was way too loud. I am sure they had everything turned up to 11. I suspect that by the time it hit the balcony it was mud. Craig’s vocals were completely muffled by the guitars. The two new guys were good, but I have to say that i am not sure they are needed. I could hear the keyboards kind of in the background, and the guitar player definitely went to the same Jimmy Page School of Rock as Tad. I missed seeing Galen up front and center, with his goofy grin and devil may care attitude. I did miss Franz as he was part of the whole show. It was sort of like pizza without the crust. Its still good, great in fact, but something important is gone. Mostly I missed the whole feeling of community, the high fives and the hugs and the sweat and the spilling of suds. It was the first THS show I have left where I wasn’t drenched and this morning I had no bruises, no phantom pains, and my jeans were folded nicely over a chair rather than tossed in a heap in the corner. I didn’t feel the urge to keep the party going and went straight home. That was weird. All in all it was a good, but not great night. Craig is one of the most engaging front men in rock and roll and I hope some day they grow into their ‘big boy pants”. Last night was a baby step, and dare I say they stumbled a little. While it was great to hear Killer Parties close the show, I missed seeing the diehards. They may have been there, but I couldn’t see them. So raise a glass for SMJ, and Bandana, and Meghan, Joelle, Jersey and Heidi and Ekennedy. It was weird not seeing you all rocking out in the front row, sweaty and delirious, smiling till the last note rang true. Killer parties almost killed me. it was definitely a little strange not to be there... but as soon as they play somewhere i can dance, that is either in NYC or on a weekend in a neighboring city, i'll be in attendance. the feedback i'm hearing is exactly why i didn't go - next time.

Last night was my fiftieth Hold Steady show. It ruled. It was the first time since the first show I attended in 2006 that I wasn't up front. My tickets were for the twelfth row orchestra, but right as the lights dimmed, I slipped (and completely lucked out) into an open seat in the third row. (Hoodrat, not yours. Completely random.) Nice setlist, a lot of energy in a really cool room. I joked with Brian and Cindy that I felt like we were all displaced (LOST-style) and were looking around for survivors. Either way, it was a pretty fun, theater-ready setlist, nice to hear "KP" at the end, especially with the "So Much Joy" speech. Last night was a special one. Felt more like a modern Wilco show (the large theater) than anything else. That was a nice twist. I did miss the club, GA vibe of most shows, but this was a cool twist. For these songs to appeal to such a large audience was actually pretty remarkable. I'm not ever going to forget those 'whoa-oh's' coming from the balcony during "Chips Ahoy", or watching 'Stay Positive' turn from the rave up it is in a club to a monolithic arena-ready anthem. Simply awesome. (A note: Three dudes that were front and center BROUGHT it. They kept turning around to the people behind them, jumping up and down, fist pumping, singing as loud as they could to the words. Felt like they were doing right since I couldn't.)

I wanted to email the band about this but couldn't track down an email so instead I found this board... but, yeah, last night was a sad show! I've seen the hold steady a bunch of times now - in minneapolis, fargo, winnipeg, toronto, chicago, new york -and all the time it has been this sweaty jumpy mess. and last night me and my boyfriend went to try to get up front (after CF said 'don't pay attention to the seats!') and we got manhandled by a security guard. my overly boozed-up boyfriend got upset, we got kicked out. WHAT THE F, man? we just went up there to dance. and, yeah, ended up being a little obnoxious. but I've never seen security like that in my life. we only caught three songs before it happened. how disappointing. I have never left a hold steady show anything but glowing and excited about humanity until last night.

That said, I did see your shaved-head boyfriend repeatedly shoving the security guard, to the point that everyone in all the rows was pushing into the rows away from the aisle to avoid what looked like an inevitable fist-fight. Once you passed me, your boyfriend threw a full beer at the security guard. I don't think asking you guys (or at least him) to leave was wrong at that point.... he was not staying positive.

Which dude was that?? I was in row 4 center aisle. A slobbering drunk dude next to me was fairly obnoxious. He was crowd surfing at one point but wasn't thrown out.
What was the fight in the lobby just before the encore break about?? A black guy and white woman were going at it. The HUGE security team 'escorted' them to the curb. The Beacon staff was very professional. Reminds me of the Roadhouse movie line : 'just be nice.'

Whoa.
Not sure if you guys are aware of this or not, but...The Hold Steady played THE BEACON THEATER last night.
The BEACON fucking THEATER.
We have to remember that - as much as we would like it to be- this isn't always about *us*.
This band has broken nearly every rule known to rock and roll. And I LOVE the sweaty rock-club shows as much as the next guy, but the BEACON!?
As a fan, supporter, promoter and moderator of this message board being the extent of my relationship with this band, I am SO FUCKING PROUD of these guys for playing at this legendary theater last night.
Sound was sorta muddy? So what! It ain't the last time that's gonna happen.
Oh, security were dicks? Man, that must be the first time that's EVER happened at a rock show...EVER.
And people wanted to sit in the seats that abounded the theater? Golly! The nerve!
Whatever, I wasn't at this show. But knowing what I know of the history of the Beacon Theater and having been an ardent supporter of The Hold Steady for four records now, this show must have been a CROWNING moment for them!
So hey, sorry to hear that the sound was "meh" and the security were dicks and the seats were used as seats...but The Hold Steady sold out the Beacon Theater last night.
And that's pretty fucking awesome in my book.

From my first THS show at a free show in Harrisburg to seeing them at the Beacon freaking Theatre. Just absolutely insane and could not be happier for the band. Oh and Brendan I was the guy standing next to you (on the other side of the girl) in the third row. Good times

Found m'self in NYC with work last week (all the way from the UK), and always looking to avoid any team building activities or anything else that might accidentally further my career I looked to fill an evening seeing a band.
Was very lucky to find that the Hold Steady were in town. The venue was the Beacon Theatre which (I'd never heard of but ) was absolutely magnificent. Despite being seated everyone was on their feet from the moment it kicked off and the aisles were populated. Great great atmosphere throughout and a fantastic set. One of the best gigs I've been to I'd say.
Saw them once before back here in the UK and while being a proper dirty banging venue this one had the edge.
Turns out someone I was working with knows replacement keyboard man ... odd huh.
