I hope Rachael Ray realizes how badass a setlist that is- she told Entertainment Weekly that she'd been a fan since before Stay Positive. Please tell me that she was at the side of the stage, doing the Craigisms throughout the set...

Ahhhh.... You're skipping Rachael Ray?! it was getting to the point where i was pretty sure my editor would be like, "uh, i didn't get you a wristband so you could see the hold steady 5 times."

i was at both the Friday shows ie the afternoon party at Club Deville and then the midnight mass at The Mohawk
both sets were phenomenal and i walked away from the latter with a very nice black T-shirt reprising The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me on the front and At SXSW 2009 on the reverse
got back from Austin this morning, jetlagged to infinity now...

Way to drop the ball, fools. I was looking froward to you two hanging out. next year i'll bring Ben in my suitcase, he can make the introductions I was thinking about this the other day. A year might be enough time for me to plan a holiday in TX. 1. How hard are wristbands to acquire? 2. Manish, how much do you normally fork out on flights and how far in advance do you book? 3. I hate crowds, The Music Industry, bad food and excessive heat. Will I hate SXSW?

Will I hate SXSW? 1. Not very: you can buy a badge in advance or a wristband when you get there, prices vary according to how early you get them. Or you can go without and just come to the unofficial day parties (there are often quite a few free events at night too). 2. This time my flight was free due to airmiles I'd built up after going for eight years... usually sort everything out by the previous November, hotel being the main expense. 3. The food in Austin is amazing! March is warm rather than hot, though SXSW 2009 did experience record temperatures. Crowds were slightly less than previous years, everyone seemed in a good mood, it's total fun if you like watching bands/eating/drinking. It's become essential for me, as the only time I get to see my US colleagues and a whole load of our bands - we had 18 in town this year, 11 at the showcase - all in one place.

Will I hate SXSW? 1. I'm not sure there's a firm rule for this. Last year, wristbands sold out. This year, they didn't. The wristbands are supposed to be a local thing, kind of a 'Thanks for letting us have this event in your town' pat on the ass for Austinites. In the end, you can wrap your whole damn arm in wristbands and not get into Stubb's for Metallica. If there's an official show you're going to get into with a wristband, you'll probably be able to pay a cover ($8-12) instead. I spend noon 'til 8 seeing as many free shows as I can and by then I'm usually drunk as hell, so a wristband would be wasted on my wasted ass. 3. Austin is one of the best towns I've ever been to. The food (Mex and BBQ) is fantastic, the drinks are cheap, and March is the best weather they get. There's enough people hanging out that you can always walk away from that conversation with the A&R guy and talk to someone more interesting. No, you won't hate it.

Will I hate SXSW? The crowds aren't that bad unless you're trying to see a hugely popular artist like Metallica or The Decemberists. Surprisingly, I saw very few industry types. The food in Austin is amazing! That alone is worth the trip. The weather is something you really can't control, but it was absolutely perfect this year. I would totally recommend it.

I wouldn't even suggest buying a wristband, as most bands are playing free shows and if they're not it's not incredibly difficult to get into the shows (from what I'm told). There's a lot of fun to be had even without one, and you can always go to Beerland (non SXSW venue) and see all the really cool bands they have there. Circle Jerks and Dillinger Four both played there, and they have a bunch of really great garage type acts and other things.
