I wouldn't even suggest buying a wristband, as most bands are playing free shows and if they're not it's not incredibly difficult to get into the shows (from what I'm told). There's a lot of fun to be had even without one, and you can always go to Beerland (non SXSW venue) and see all the really cool bands they have there. Circle Jerks and Dillinger Four both played there, and they have a bunch of really great garage type acts and other things. D4 at beerland = one of the best shows i saw all week

Thanks folks! I'll start looking into flights.
I've heard the food in Austin is amazing but the reason I ask is that the one day I spent there was spent looking for some Texmex, finding a load of fake Irish bars and eventually getting a Quiznos. Austin - yr doin' it wrong. Maybe I hit a bad part of town... I did get some killer toots though!

I think I might have saw you when you talked to Michael (animobileaws) at the Hold Steady Red7 show, he seemed to recognize a few people as unified scenesters. I was probably one of the only people under 21 in the place, and I was up front the whole time. D4 at Beerland > D4 at Red7. Show was fucking amazing, so was the set list. Franz being there definitely was a plus.

Franz was freaking out a little bit too at that song, though I could tell he didn't know any of the lyrics. He did the whole hit himself in the head thing, it was cute. I have a feeling whenever they come through a town and have their own show it's like 2x as crazy, but it was really cool to see them in such a small club. I think my favorite part was Paddy walking off stage right after the first encore to try and avoid the second one. I'm definitely stoked for the next time they roll through too, hopefully they'll work up some of the songs they don't play all the time (I'm pretty sure they learn like 15 of their songs then go on tour, haha).

i was at both the Friday shows ie the afternoon party at Club Deville and then the midnight mass at The Mohawk both sets were phenomenal and i walked away from the latter with a very nice black T-shirt reprising The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me on the front and At SXSW 2009 on the reverse got back from Austin this morning, jetlagged to infinity now... How amazing was getting given those shirts? My friend and I (both from Australia) were finishing our beers and discussing how amazing the Mohawks set had been and a guy just came through and asked if we'd like a free THS t-shirt and what size we were... When I opened it and it was the classic 'The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me' design I swear I was the happiest person in the world... Unifying the scene indeed....
