Does anyone else belive that The Hold Steady are a great way into finding out about more great music? I decided to make a tree of artists I dig all thanks to The Hold Steady. Some I just never decided to try out and some I had never even heard of. You'll notice that a lot of these artists are thanks to The Hold Steady introducing me to the behemoth that is The Mountain Goats, but it still counts in my book.
Bold indicates artists I got into because of The Hold Steady, normal indicates artists I got into because of artists I got into because of The Hold Steady, itallics indicates artists I got into because of artists I got into because of artists I got into because of The Hold Steady...
The Hold Steady - Art Brut o Art Goblins o Everybody Was In The French Resistance… Now! o Glam Chops - The Brokerdealer - Dillinger Four - Drive-By Truckers - Bob Dylan - Lifter Puller o Atmosphere o Dinosaur Jr. o Gang Of Four - The Mountain Goats o The Aum Rifle o Aesop Rock o Bingo Trappers o The Bloody Hawaiians o Franklin Bruno o DiskothiQ o The Drifters o Dump o The Extra Glenns . Little Teeth o Furniture Huschle o John S. Hall o Simon Joyner o Kaki King o MK Ultra o Neutral Milk Hotel o Nothing Painted Blue o Paste o Peter Peter Hughes o Radiohead o Refrigerator o Superchunk o Trembling Blue Stars o John Vanderslice o WCKR SPGT o Hank Williams - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Franz Nicolay - P.O.S. o Cenospecies o None More Black - The Replacements o Paul Westerberg - Elliott Smith - Bruce Springsteen - The Time - Violent Femmes
Because of THS forums: - Bomb The Music Industry! - The Decemberists - The Flaming Lips - TV On The Radio

Almost all the bands I listen to these days are through the forum of another band. I think that if you're around people that mention what bands they like a lot then you're gonna be likely to listen to them.

I don't see J Roddy and The Business, Right On Dynamite or Titus Andronicus on that list.

Got into Zero Boys and Youth of today, and 80's hardcore in general because of Finn, the bad man.
P.O.S is another one, and has now become one of my favourite artists

The combination of discovering THS when at 16 and not being raised into music meant there was still a lot of ground I hadn't touched. My favorite artists pre-THS were The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Socratic, Green Day, Hellogoodbye, Bowling For Soup... I of course had heard of Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead but couldn't notice any of their songs. I had never even heard of The Replacements.

Nick Cave is awesome, I gotta recommend his earlier band The Birthday Party, and in the same breath The Killing Joke and Big Black, a couple Nick Cave-influenced punk bands

I have Titus Andronicus an Youth Of Today on my mental list of bands to check out. And I can't really get into the Gaslight Anthem.

90% of the music I listen to stems back to art brut - I heard about THS because they were touring with Art Brut, Drive By Truckers because they were touring with THS, and then The Mountain Goats, Okkervil River, Los Campesinos!, The Replacements and even Bruce Springsteen got to me through this forum. My music collection would be very different if my sister didn't play My Little Brother to me when I was about 9.

seeing as they've been mentioned a couple times, Titus Andronicus' new(ish) album the Monitor i just have to say is ****ing immense. One of the best albums this year. I don't often find myself listening to many 14 minute long tracks featuring bagpipe solos but they manage to make it quite a magnificent experience. I'd highly recommend them to pretty much anyone and indeed i have done...
As well as that, plenty of my favourite bands/artists are getting mentioned in here which is nice. It's odd how much of an incestuous link there always is between the bands i like, i was into D4, Atmosphere, POS, World Inferno and a few other related artists before i ever heard THS and i like the way they all tie together.

Oh, and i'm always happy to see BTMI getting mentioned, having been a fan since they started during ASOBs closing days, its amazing how fast jeff can produce quality music and how he can put so much energy into a show when its just him and a guitar. I'd like to see BTMI! hit the UK with more than two members sometime though, admittedly.

i tried liking YOT when i was younger and it just didnt work. ray cappo sounds too much like a squawking bird. shelter seemed good at the time, but in retrospect they're just sorta rap metal. better than a thousand was decent.
i think they're a band that you have to get into when you're a kid or else it just won't work

Nick Cave is awesome, I gotta recommend his earlier band The Birthday Party, and in the same breath The Killing Joke and Big Black, a couple Nick Cave-influenced punk bands or his earlier earlier band, the Boys Next Door he's Australia's greatest hero. screw you, Jessica Watson. and Ned Kelly with the Violent Femmes, i should mention The Break. it's Brian Ritchie from the Violent Femmes + the members of Midnight Oil that aren't Peter Garret - www.thebreak.net.aubut yeah, i grew up on Dylan, Springsteen, Cohen, Cave and lots of classic rock. was wandering around the indie rock wilderness until THS snapped me out of it. rededicated me to Bruce, got me into the Replacements.... i want to say i'm the biggest Dylan fan here, but i'm probably not and THS/this board explicitly got me into Drive-By Truckers, Frank Turner, and The Loved Ones (listening now... not sure if i like them yet, but i'm probably going to their show) and Jesse Malin.... you guys almost convinced me to pay too much for Wilco and will probably get me to the next Frightened Rabbit show trying to get into Art Brut thinking of tracking down all the music THS mention on the new album.. i like Husker Du but i'm not a big fan, i'm a bit down on Pavement, and i was born too late for all the hardcore they worship. but yeah, trying but i feel like they snapped me on another musical course, one that means i'm more excited about the Loved Ones tour then Yeasayer or Band of Horses (though i should probably check them out)

i mostly love how he can do ANYTHING really well. great acoustic folk songs, surreal rock n roll, apocalyptic epics, pop country, folk rock, and however you'd classify his last few albums
