The only words that come to mind are "bitch, please."
One of the Art Brut franchises made a song called "NME My Enemy," and it fits this nicely.

i used the phrase 'NMEindie' to describe all the generic British guitar rock bands that pull Brit backpacker crowds over here
it's a pretty obnoxious word, now that i think about it

i like the Gaslight Anthem, but with the exception of 2-3 songs on each album, its fairly cookie cutter. The same formula is repeated more often than not.
They really shine on the songs where they try something a little different, like Miles Davis and the Cool, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, and The Diamond Church Street Choir. The other songs are are still good, catchy, easy to listen to music, but honestly, you've heard a few tracks and you've heard them all.
Once they branch out and take some risks on an entire album, they'll be awesome. American Slang is good, but how many more albums like this can they make before the novelty of it wears off?
There is something to be said for their broad appeal though. They're one of the few bands where it just clicks from the first listen. All three albums are very easily accessible.

Complaining that "every THS song is about partying", is like complaining that every Godfather film is about the mafia or every Star Wars film is set in space.

The only thing that matters to me is that I'm seeing the two bands on consecutive nights in June

THS is like a good, craft-brewed beer. Complex, layered, and intricate; something you really want to delve into and enjoy, and maybe even think about why you're enjoying it.
Gaslight is like a PBR. Lighter, not quite as hearty or fulfilling, and not quite the investment that a craft brew is, but good nonetheless.
Either way you're getting a beer, but with THS you're getting a better beer. Gaslight will get you drunk, but it's not as enjoyable overall.
This comparison sounded better in my head...

The NME is a British version of Pitchfork. 'Nuff said.
Am I the only one who doesn't see much similarity between these bands?

I have a case of PBR cans, and a six pack of Three Floyds Alpha King. I went with the Alpha King. I wanted to enjoy a good beer, not just get drunk. I feel like this comparison works perfectly.

I first heard THS in Tony Hawk's Project 8 (Yr Little Hoodrat friend) and I hated it, especially Craig's voice. I read a review of BaGiA a couple of years later and decided to get it, now they're my favourite band.
I first heard TGA in skate (I'da Called You Woody, Joe) and I loved it but The '59 Sound is the only album I've listened to the whole way through and I think I've only done that once. I hate the echo thing he does with his voice. Totally ruins the album for me.
I don't see much similar in the bands at all though.

To assume that Gaslight is a band that isn't "as enjoyable overall" or not "as hearty or fulfilling" for whatever reason is wrong. It might work for you, but I've been more fulfilled by songs like "Great Expectations," "Film Noir," "1930," and "Wooderson" or others than a lot of THS songs. Just because they have simpler structures than most THS songs doesn't mean they can't be more "fulfilling" whatever that exactly means. Both bands are great at what they set out to do. I look at Gaslight as a great beer and the Hold Steady as a great wine (or vice versa)- I prefer beer sometimes, wine sometimes, but they are both different drinks. They don't serve the same purposes (sure wine and beer both get you drunk but you drink them at different times, just like THS/TGA both make rock songs, but different kinds)... so it makes no real sense to compare the great beer to the great wine is what I'm saying I guess. I still blame all the post-59 Sound Springsteen fans ha

Do they mean all two of The Gaslight Anthems songs that they then just play 5 times each on a record?

Am I the only one who doesn't see much similarity between these bands? You're not alone. If there aren't some pretty obvious similarties between THS and TGA, which bands have similarites between them at all? To me, the two bands are probably more similar than each band compared to 99% of every act there is today. And if we narrows it down to rock bands, I still think the two bands have more in comming than 95% of every other rock band will have with each one of them. Just to turn things around: Which bands will you say are similar?

The only wrong thing here is your impression that the guy you're quoting are talking about objective truths. He's stating a preference, and its just as right or wrong as yours. The same thing goes for the 'fulfilling' part. I take it for granted that he means fulfilling to him. And of course a band can be more or less fulfilling for an individual. I kind of like TGA, but I can't get myself to love them in any way. I think they have some pretty great tunes and that their mix of adolescent attitudes and sounds and nostalgia sometimes work really well. But everything they has to offer me, I find in other bands and albums, bands who does it better, and albums who works better. TGA is a good band. They just don't have any natural place in my life. Or if there was a place for them, that place is already occupied by someone else. I have listened quite a lot to both of their records, and have seen them live once. It was a nice experience, but I lost interest about two thirds into the set. It just became repetitive. And I think I had expected more from the live show - that their music sounds like it will be perfect for the concert setting. I guess I was a bit disappointed that it didn't. Or that it did in a less degree than I had expected.

I love both bands. TGA do the NJ, redemptive, getting out thing well Much like Springsteen and Bon Jovi before them. THS are far more complex in lyrics/ stories. Both of which I enjoy, though I am drawn towards TGA (if you saw what Aviemore was like, you would understand (its almost as bad as the Shore) why).

what kills me about gaslight anthem is the whole nostalgia for a time they never even lived through; that extreme romanticism of the past. i'm much more interested in right now.

Right?!?!?! I'm sure Tain is the same. I have a theory on the romantic view of the past: Brian grew up in Redbank and clearly spent sometime on the shore. For the past 30 years, the shore has been (mostly) a shit hole that has got better over the last few years. Dereliction and crime are mentioned in Springsteen's songs though it wasn't as bad as it was through the 80s-90s.

i do agree with that TGA songs sound similar (though AS changes that). i mean 6 or so songs on 59S are in Bb and have the same chord progression. but gaslight has songs that just bring you up and more generic but heartwarming lyrics (If you never let me go, I will never let you down). i like both bands a lot, THS is better live but i can't say i walk away from "A Slight Discomfort" with the same feeling i do when i hear "The Backseat" that being said American Slang is a great album and even better than HiW(though isn't as good as SS or BAGIA)

The only thing that matters to me is that I'm seeing the two bands on consecutive nights in June Now that could have been annoying - after looking at the upcoming gig list I was given after seeing The Duke and the King in Manchester last night (awesome gig btw) I spotted that TGA is actually on the Thursday, two days before THS. Am I glad I noticed that now rather than on the Friday

Seen them three times; they're phenomenal. ;D Hijack away They were incredible - even when the sound went badly wrong (technical problem) they carried on acoustically and did a storming version of Pink Floyd's Brain Damage.
