I really love the reference to 40 Bucks in We Can Get Together, as well as the shout out to First Night on Our Whole Lives

There are references everywhere and I love it

Really good songs, great lyrics, but way, way overproduced.
For the most part live versions sound really different (and by far better). This has not been the case in the past.
The production of When We Get Together is especially disappointing.
Guess I am too old school. Maybe HiW it will grow on me after a few listens.

i dont think it sounds overproduced, just more produced than previous records records and live shows are totally different creatures, and i think they embraced that more this time around

A Slight Discomfort is so damn good, but is definitely a sad closer. So Holly just fell back into her old ways? Done with Catholicism, says she's changed but it doesn't show? Really leaves you hanging, unlike previous closers (Notably Slapped Actress and Resurrection).
I really love the line "And New York City, I love it when you turn on your lights / Our struggle still feels wonderful tonight"

i get this mental image of whoever discomfort is about (holly, maybe? who knows) just giving in to the succubi from the earlier verse at the end. they tried everything, its not working, so they're giving up and letting go. it's horribly sad. and its so affecting.

Well, I really love "The Sweet Part of the City." I can't even put it into words. Not sure what else I can muster. This sounds like Tunnel of Love + Bon Jovi (+ some Eagles, from time to time). Mixed feelings, for me.
It won't and doesn't at all need to be this way for everybody, but having been a fan since the way olden days, I just realize that there is almost nothing about this band that initially drew me to it, anymore. That doesn't need to be bad, good, or whatever else. In may case, however, it is at least the truth. For me, these last two/three records have elicited a very mixed reaction.

Hey, haven't posted in a good while, but thought this a good oppotunity to start properly.
On the first listen of my BEAUTFUL CLEAR VINYL i was still a little uncomfortable with the whole thing. I didn't get Rock Problems when i first heard it, and i still don't. It just sounds a bit empty. I also desperatly felt the need to skip towards the end of When We Get Together, those backing vocals meander horribly.. Same goes for the A Slight Discomfort.. i just cant listen to two chord over and over again.
But despite these (slight) critisisms i surprisingly love Sweet Part of the City, Soft in Centre is a belter of a tune (if a little cheesy) and Weekenders and Barely Breathing remain fucking mental.
I really dig the Weezer-esque Pop Rock sound they are whipping out on some of the songs, and the drums and bass are sounding so sick this time around
At the moment, after three complete listens, i thiiiink i prefer it to Stay Positive, but Craig's lyrics just arent up to the standards of AKM, SS and BAGIA, and the lyrics being my main draw to the Steady it does unfortunatly drag it down a little
Having said this, i can't wait to sit down with the sleeve notes and really have a royal go at the new lyrics, as i had to do with SP

It might just be the production, but the poppy guitar lines on songs like Hurricane J and the Smidge reminded me a bit of ole' Weezer

this album sounds a lot less poppy than the last 2 to me

Its certainly less poppy as a whole, although there are the couple poppy tracks that everyone keeps referring to.
To me this sounds like a natural progression, which is what a band needs to do to stay relevant. You can't put out "version 2.0" of a previous album. As good as Separation Sunday is, that album is going to have to stand on its own. They aren't going to make another one.
Also, we know of 5 b-sides from this album, and they all sound pretty good, so there is an additional half album of new music to look forward to from them in the coming months.

out of curiosity, is there a running plot or at least a storyline from this?

this album sounds a lot less poppy than the last 2 to me It's an interesting mix to me. The poppy sounding stuff on the record (Soft in the Center, Rock Problems, Hurricane J, maybe even Our Whole Lives) seems way more poppy than their other stuff. But the stuff that doesn't have a pop sound is like not even close to being poppy, and alot darker (Weekenders, Barely Breathing, Slight Discomfort). However, pop doesn't equal bad, as it often times seems synonymous with

Touchless Ascension Blue Criminal Fingers ?? ?? Are the other two Going On A Hike & Separate Vacations? Has that been confirmed by anyone?

Well we know that they were written for the album, but whether they were actually recorded and mastered is another story.
