The line in The Weekenders "In the end, only the girls know the whole truth" makes me smile every single time. . the weekenders is giving me chills as i type...bottle of wine and a smoke on the go and pounding my fist... "I wish we hadn't gone and destroyed it...Cos I was thinking we could pull another weekender..."

It's good but that's a gross overstatement imo. That's the "newness" talking. I don't think its newness automatically disqualifies it from being the best either. Granted you may be right and I may just be on a first listen high. I think I already love it more than Stay Positive and I loved Stay Positive, I think it's more consistent than BAGIA, even with the two sub par tracks(that seem to being growing on me minute by minute). Although it doesn't have the peaks that Boys and Girls did Both Seperation Sunday and especially AKM seem to be sacred cows around here and people don't seem to even acknowledge the fact that this could be better. So far, I think a case could be made that it might be the best, which I wasn't expecting at all. I'm looking forward to everyone digesting it and seeing what the consensous is. Yea I didn't mean to say it being new means it couldn't be their best. My impressions right now are that it is solid through and through, but it doesn't have the high points that most of the other records have. These are all pretty good songs, but I don't think any of them are mind blowing. Different strokes for different folks though. That's what's great about music, and THS in general. People like such a wide range and variety of their tunes.

I don't think its newness automatically disqualifies it from being the best either. i totally agree. older things seems to always get preferential treatment just because they're familiar. which is understandable, but it also gives new things the shaft sometimes. and that sucks

Not only have they not put out a bad record, they've yet to put one out that isn't totally kick ass

ok on the third go round and this is a great fucking record.... reminds me much more of the work i had to put in to 'GET' AKM or SS - but the riffs are rocking and the lyrics are incredible, its the Hold Steady alright. bring on the UK dates..... it'll be my first THS show...

Listening as I'm studying and I'm definitely starting to dig it more. It's a grower for sure.

i think calling jessie a "hurricane" and the line about the trainwreck in "the weekenders" are related. craig's characters are never the most together of people

yeah i picked up on that too.... although annoyed a song i recently recorded described someone as a 'trainwreck' too - before i heard 'weekenders'.... finn has a way of managing to put perfectly in a song exactly what i'm trying to say.... the swine... love it though...

I think "You're a beautiful girl and you're a pretty good waitress' is by far the worst lyric Craig has ever written. I cringe when I hear it. Our Whole Lives album version is superb. That line is much better than Our Whole Lives genius quote "ring ring ring goes the telephone". Yea, someone explain this line to me!

Do you all feel like this is a more grown up album?

i wouldn't say 'grown up' ...Finn is still dealing with the same issues and actually in some places it seems like a regression into pure stone-headed rock n roll...its an exciting rock n roll album with great lyrics...ie. a Hold Steady album... we may not hear a 'grown up' album until Finn records a purely confessional record rather than hiding behind characters...

Do you all feel like this is a more grown up album? Not really. Content wise its not much different than their other stuff.

Do you all feel like this is a more grown up album? yes and no. I think a lot of laundry must be washed in this album with band changes and that sort of thing. I am waiting for the album when the break through actually happens between Finn and his therapist.
