I've never thought much about the princess thing either, but it might connect with king Charlemagne. And I'm not that good on ancient history, but isn't Charlemagne and the developement of catholicism in Europe connected?

Arms & Hearts has always had me a bit confused. Anyone (somuchjoy) got a theory on how it fits into the story? The first person narrator seems to be Charlemagne but I'm basing that purely on the fact that he got a hole burned into him. The assumption here seems to be that the 'she' is Holly but I don't get it myself. Help appreciated.

I'm one of those people that think the narrator is his own character, so I think it's between the narrator and Holly. I'm thinking it may be related to Party Pit. "She got pinned down and I'm pretty sure we kissed."

arms and hearts sounds to me like a cliff's notes version of separation sunday. someone looking back at everything that happened on it and kind of not believing how fast it all went by. it's got it all -- the road trip across the country, the parties, the thinking someone is actually holy but ends up a ghost...and ends with redemption

Looking at the lyrics again, they both make a lot of sense. Thanks chaps. I always took the last line kind of literally, assuming that 'Holly' had finally died or so the narrator thought. But we know now that heaven is whenever...

That's the best I've ever seen it described.

Okay I am a little behind on this thread... not the first time I have listened but...first time I have been able to post while listening...anyhow
Sweet Part - 100% in lust with this song. Guitar is so sweet it hurts. Imagine that the tour with Drive By Truckers had some influence on this one. Storyline still intact. When you can't get your car off the curb !
Soft - Opening verse is brilliant. I have mixed feelings about the chorus. Second verse is brilliant. I have mixed feelings about the chorus.
Weekenders - Standard issue Hold Steady , whats not to like ?
Smidge - Filthy guitar and sexy back beat - this song is just bad ass. Just a smidge. Just a little bit.
Problems - Very visual song I can see it all going down. The song references start in this song and continue right into Get Together. This is just what I wanted.
Get Together - For Sunday mornings on the couch with the one you love. Recovery song. Now have a Bloody Mary , spark a J. Its gonna be ok.
HJ - I once wrote a song about a vampire waitress at an all night diner. It was called French Fry Crucifix. Is Jessie a new character ? Welcome Jessie. Nice to meet ya.
Barely - Loving the sound , kind of disjointed. Wish the chorus went up instead of down.
Our Whole Lives - Well it has the lyric pre-emptive strike which has been an inside joke in a small circle of friends for the last year or so. And your damn right I believe in love. Parts of this song make me feel like I have been up too long.
Slight Disco - Dark , then the light comes. Just like the album art.
The artwork in this album is too familiar to me as it reminds me of the time I very nearly died whitewater rafting in WV. Short story - I was pinned up against some rocks and could only get my arm out about to the elbow , head underwater.Bodies getting sucked under me. Someone trying to pull me up , unsuccesfully. Eternity. Finally they push me down instead and i get sucked into the pitch black , rocks overhead bouncing off them and the bottom. Light above now , fucking swim up hard. The biggest and greates breath of air I will ever take. Like I said the artwork is too bizarre. They are in my head. Last pic is the new beginning.
Anyhow, thanks for another kick ass set of songs !

HaHa okay , tion I will try to find my scribblings for that one... been a long time. No it is not really like Night Flyer. It is more told through the eyes of an unlucky customer that wanders in to this all night diner on the outskirts of Vegas. I will try to find the lyrics and post... one thing to keep in mind... when you find yourself at one of these 24 hour eateries , always order fries and always save the last two !
