Same, i like the lyrics on RP but it's just the guitar line, and lack of any real substance muscically that puts me off

I like The Smidge, even though I think the chours and the bridge is way better than the verses.
But I must say: The transfer between The Weekenders and The Smidge is the only one on the entire record who doesn't work perfect. It's a minor complain, but it's worth mentioning.

Today the sun was shining, so I went out with a lawn chair, a pack of cigarettes, and my ipod. This new album fucking rules.
I would have to agree with whoever said that it wouldn't surprise them to see HIW show up on some year-end best of 2010 lists.

now it's just Rock Problems that I don't dig. perhaps you don't understand humor. I see it as a fucking funny-ass take on the set piece that every classic rock band trots out eventually. "Rock 'n Roll Band" by Boston, "What's Your Name," Skynyrd, "Long Way to the Top," AC/DC, "Juke Box Hero," Foreigner, "Dead or Alive," Bon Jovi, "Shooting Star," Bad Company, "Turn the Page," Bob Seger, etc. etc. Even "99 Problems" and DBTs "Let there be Rock", except instead of doing anything rawkish, CF is just trying to get out of doing the dishes, taking anonymous internet criticism, and dealing with drunk girls trying to be arch about his lyrics. Just what he wanted. i dunno why but all the lines about wanting to stay in but also wanting to go out really resonate with me but yeah 'rock problems' is a phrase with many uses, and i can see 'i just can't sympathize with your rock and roll problems' getting trotted out pretty regularly, especially online

I like everything except for:
Soft in the Center The Smidge Our Whole Lives Slight Discomfort
...yeah that's nearly half the album. At least the rest is pretty excellent.
I think HiW has some good songs, but I think it's weak as an album.

Interesting as is to be expected from THS. I'll be sacrificing my speakers to the Smidge... heaven help the sub WOOF!! The over production and backing vocals do seem a bit much. It will be interesting to see how this conveys to the live show, which we all know is the only way to experience THS.

what i noticed today:
its great how side A ends with "rock problems", a light-hearted song about rock n roll and complaining about what it can get you into. super upbeat music with lyrics about getting over problems you brought upon yourself
then side B starts with "we can get together," a whole different angle on personal relationships with music. the sentiment is much nicer but the music's more of a downer, more like the good days are all behind. such a great juxtaposition. thumbs up to whoever sequenced this record

What can possibly be put against A Slight Discomfort!? maybe they feel really bad for what happens to the person in the song?

I love the album and can't wait for May 4th. I'll be picking up a physical copy. I'm surprised to see such dislike with the album, but more than that, I guess I'm out of touch with a bulk of THS fans. The consensus seems to be that Boys and Girls is better than Stay Positive and I don't remotely agree with that.

stay positive took a while to grow on me i love how it shifts mood throughout the course of the record its so upbeat and hopeful at first, then everything goes to shit. but beautifully

What can possibly be put against A Slight Discomfort!? I like the song, but the first part of it is a bit too dark, in my opnion. Darkness is great, but I just don't get emotionally attached to the spooky feeling. There's a lack of a melody that touches me in any way. The last part, though, from "New York City..." and on, is amazing. Therefore: 8/10.

I love how all of the struggle and reward stuff that Craig was talking up in the pre-release interviews can be summed up with "this shouldn't hurt, but you might feel a slight discomfort." Heaven (hypothetical or otherwise) being the ultimate reward, and the pain and suffering in life that can only be described as a slight discomfort in hindsight, after all is said and done and the reward is achieved.

I'm having the same experience with this record that I've had with all of the previous ones. On first listen, it's a, "I like it, but it's not as good as the last one" and then on subsequent listens i absolutely fucking fall in love with it. I was initially thinking it wasn't as anthemic as BAGIA but it just keeps kicking my ass. I'm glad that I've got a THS album for the summer again.

I usually have the same emotion about every band that I like's new album.. but when I listened to this one, I immediately liked it better than Stay Positive. I never could get in to that whole album, but the new one sounds killer front to back. I am excited.

So after creeping on these boards for a few months I figure maybe I should join (plus I'm getting tired of posting my opinions on the Hold Steady on my Facebook where no one cares). Admittingly, I've only listened to Heaven is Whenever on laptop speakers, and I know shit about music, but I gotta put in my two cents anyway: I love this CD. I'm not feeling "The Sweet Part of the City" as an opening song, though, but I'm not sure why since I do like the song alright. "Soft in the Center" really picks it up for me, though, and I like it--the chorus makes me grin, however cheesy. "The Smidge" made me cringe, in contrast (although I'm glad I'm apparently not the only one not into it, even if I am in the minority with that); it's probably going to be one of those songs I ignore for a few months and then fall in love with, though. Until then, I'm probably going to keep skipping it.
I totally don't get the hate on "Hurricane J", either. Maybe it's because it was the first song from the new CD I heard, but I've had it on repeat since it was posted on Youtube, haha. "Barely Breathing" is definitely my favorite off the album, though, with "We Can Get Together" being my favorite lyrics-wise (although, seriously, those backing vocals? ugh). And "A Slight Discomfort" actually gave me chills the first time I heard it. Overall, I definitely like this album more than their last CD (which I skip a good portion of when listening to), probably better than Almost Killed Me, as well, but not quite as much as Separation Sunday or Boys and Girls in America.
... also, I'm sorry if this post is kinda long-winded for a first post.
