loving the solo at the end this song calls out for some Twitter promotion. link to the song, then a #RockProblems one liner like 'The opening act drank our rider' #RockProblems

I guess I'm in the minority of people who like this better than hurricane j. I liked it on first listen. Hurricane J took a few times. Different tastes i suppose.

I loved Hurricane J, and I really like this one, especially all the previous song references. I'm really pumped to hear a finished version of "Heaven is Whenever" and hopefully "Separate Vacations" and "Going on a Hike".

riff reminds me of The Ramones, lyrics remind me of The Hold freaking Steady but the guitar solo is straight classic rock, the vocals are straight garage this is awesome.

Finally heard it thanks to theriver, and I absolutely love it. I can't really say if I like this one or Hurricane J more, but I think I'm more on the Rock Problems end of the scale.

And still I think Our Whole Lives will be a lot better. That one I really look forward to.

And I agree with the Barfruit Blues link. A v2.0, sort of. The references, the self referential stuff related to being a band, the feeling of the song and the lines picked up from Almost Killed Me. It's one thing to start with a positive jam, and it's one thing to be back in a bar band - but they've come a long way from there, haven't they?
It seems like this record is structured in the same way as Stay Positive, with a mix of story songs and songs about being in a band. And I think I like that.

all the lines about not wanting to go out but going out anyway or having your mind changed by a song ring way too true

Craig's lyrics are getting too ****** CONVOLUTED! I hope he never uses the word party or parties again.Time to switch up the game Craig! Maybe he needs to start listening to some Dylan to get a cue on different lyrical themes.

Maybe he needs to start listening to some Dylan to get a cue on different lyrical themes. I'm all for lyrical diversity, and I love Bob Dylan. But a few bands manage to stick to one simple trail album after album. I think Hold Steady are one of those bands, even though I have no problem with people feeling otherwise. A dylanesque approach wouldn't suit The Hold Steady very good in my opinion. They are all about what you see, feel and hear. The concrete stuff. And I think they does that pretty damn well.

99 Problems is worn out where I'm coming from (the Marcy). I used 'You gotta dance with who came to the dance with' against the same criticism in another thread. Proud of that, I was.

It's probably my favorite of the new songs that I've heard live.

Us old folk knew that already. (Also, DBT does regularly close their shows with it. I love their version but my heart belongs to the original.) it's an awesome song! are all the other song references Cheap Trick songs? only one i know is Southern Girls The title track of Catholic Boy is worth a look-see (a hear-listen?). Well, I love the whole album.

I dug it! It's impossible not to like anything they put out.
So two songs in two weeks. Think they'll release a song a week til the album drops?
Nice reference on the Fuckboyz. I'm a huge Hickey Fan!

Maybe he needs to start listening to some Dylan to get a cue on different lyrical themes. Craig claims in an interview that his whole convoluted narrative approach to songwriting came from Tangled Up In Blue but I grew up on Dylan, and you can't compare anyone else to Dylan. he's America's greatest living poet Craig is pretty damn good, and he can sketch characters in a few lines the way Dylan could, but to expect anyone to operate on that plane is silly. Craig's in a pack with Will Sheff and Colin Meloy and John Carnielle and Patterson Hood and he comes out damn great i do agree he tends to repeat himself so much but I like how he puts names to specific feelings and dissects the scene perfectly. like this track... everything in it is specific to Craig's characters but it's also universal, or at least relatable to people living that lifestyle (rockstar or fan) plus the narratives are fun

Now, nobody jump on me, but I didn't fall in love with either song. They were good, but I just didn't get that "I literally can't possibly wait for this album to come out" feeling as I have with past albums. I'll still buy it, love it to bits, and play it until it gets old. But...for some reason I feel like its sort of juvenile. Not in a bad way, but in a "this is our band's first album" way? The lyrics are great, as always, but the presentation...just...I don't know, the musicality sounds as if it could have came from a score of other bands, doesn't have that Hold Steady flavor. Then again, I listened to Seperation Sunday earlier today, and the sheer contrast between the two might just have me in shock at the moment. But at the same time, incredibly happy that they move on and try new things and styles, instead of continually re-releasing albums that are essentially new versions of BGIA, or something, like many bands seem to do. Does anyone see where I'm coming from, or am I getting dirty glares at the moment? Haha.
