she wants to know what i like being better: trash bin or ash machine Ice machine. "I was a teenage ice machine..."/"I was a twin cities trash bin" This is an AKM reference. And I guess the same can be said about "I'll do anything but..."

Either way, I will be dancing down the front. I fully expect a mosh pit to open up.

Really diggin this one. Nice guitar work. Craig's voice definitely sounds a little different on these 2 songs.
I like the little Hot Soft Light reference w/ the tentacles tightening

I enjoyed it! There's a nice kind of weight behind the sound. I'm going to hope the slightly tinny quality is just from it being streamed, not crappy production. The guitar is surprisingly retro in places!! Nicely self-referential both in sound and lyrics. I think I might prefer it to Hurricane J. But I find it difficult to decide what I think of songs before I hear the whole album, especially with THS - it's like reading a chapter sample from a book and being all "yeah that seems cool but I don't know the back story or where this fits". So we shall see.

I love the song and the Cheap Trick references. The title (but not much else) reminds me of the old Fuckboyz song, "Rock n Roll Problem." www.myspace.com/fuckthefuckboyzThe Fuckboyz song is kinda long, but it's worth sticking with it to get to the guitar solo.

I guess I'm gonna have to be the party pooper of this thread and say that I'm not crazy about this song. The riff is really cheesy, and there's something very off about the production. I much prefer Hurricane J. I do like the lyrics alot. Hopefully this will grow on me when I feast my ears on the whole album.

After listening to the track roughly 15 times, I'm going to give it a solid B-. They written better, but they've written worse. Although, the third verse is pretty killer.

I am really pissed that I can't hear this song until tomorrow.
JonnyJay, I can't say anything since I haven't heard it yet, but it seems that some people do prefer HJ to this one. A lot of different people like this band for different reasons, and you can't expect everyone to love every song. I do hope it grows on you though, and I hope I love it when I hear it.

i dig it, but i guess i'm in the minority in that i like Hurricane J better. hah. probably has something with what album you came to be a fan with, which was BAGIA for me. i love the earlier stuff too, but the sweet spot started with BAGIA for me.
either way, these tracks are going to be EPIC live.

from the link: "OMG a Hold Steady song about a cool girl on drugs!
Wait, are _any_ Hold Steady songs about something other than a cool girl on drugs?
By b3k on 03/29/2010 at 5:53pm"
that's... kinda true but this is also awesome and it's crunchy and fast but i like how it rings true. the whole 'rock and roll problems' thing. does that reflect the Rockist vs Poptimist divide? THS are the ultimate rockist band (ironic that Sasha Frere-Jones, who coined the term, loves them). and i've seen a big divide between gig people and dance/party people, so it could be talking about that.... like dance people will be like 'who cares who the band is? let's just dance' but guys like me are on Twitter the second the show ends, saying 'the sound was bad and the lead singer was drunk'
or is this another one of those 'we're famous/in a band now, so we're different and that's weird' things? like Craig, as the Narrator/a normal dude, just wants to chat with girls and hang out but he gets bugged by people who see him in his role as Lead Singer/Rock and Roller:
"some writers by the fridge said they didn't make the gig wants to know if i was drunk he said the kids that he knows from the net said the sound kinda sucked"
so now he's trying to do his thing but people who don't know him are passing judgment, a more sinister/annoying version of 'It's good to see you back in a bar band baby'
and i love it! it's a great song but it all rings so true!

Looking forward to cranking this up with the windows down. I think we've got the makings for a great summer record.

oh and some quick Googling made sense of this: back home we were listening to catholic boy and i got hung up on the people that died Catholic Boy is a song by Jim Carroll Band, who also wrote People Who Died. Carroll died last year, and apparently THS and DBTs covered People Who Died on their last tour together

I love their version but my heart belongs to the original.)

I like this a lot less than Hurricane J so far. I need to listen a few more times, though.
At first I didn't think Hurricane J was incredible, but now it blows my mind.

"Heaven Tonight" is also a song of the album of the same name. And In Color (And In Black and White) is album on which "Southern Girls" appears.

Really good song. Definitely a bit more of a Separation Sunday-era vibe. I'm impressed with both songs so far.
