Watch Nickelback eek out a victory here. I mean, it's not like upsets haven't happened in the (real) NCAA tournament, right? Nickleback=Kansas.

i feel there is requirments to be considered rock. 1. Banging drum that make your heart palpitate. 2. Guitar Riffs that make tears come from your eyes or your skin melt off. 3.their music brings people together 4. their music changes lives. feel free to add onto requirments, but the one of the few bands that meet those requirments on that list, THS is one of them. that's defining rock way too narrowly though, especially the really subjective last two bits what about sleazy stuff like Nashville Pussy or Supersuckers? or half the Rolling Stones/Led Zep/whatever songs that just want to get the singer laid? that's a valid form of rock. you'll end up defending alot of pandering emo and goth stuff on the criteria that it brings people together not that there's anything wrong with that as for the Postal Service, i've heard 'indietronica' before. or 'folktronica', which is like Tunng. mmmmmm Tunng i'm pretty anti-dance music but if you remove any electronic elements you're going to disqualify most modern rock

yes. and by life changing and bringing people together, if you want to get technical songs that rolling stones or zep did either got people to fuck or got people to do drugs together. i count that was bringing people together and slightly life changing.

yeah that's a good point i dunno... rock and roll is rock and roll. The Hold Steady does what they do amazingly well, but you can't define all rock bands by the standard of the Hold Steady. you'd end up with criteria that basically includes them, The Mountain Goats, Drive By Truckers, and Green Day (redemptive anthems, long form narrative albums focusing on one set of characters... seriously, they fit)
which is cool, but its also cool to be like 'eh, its all rock and roll, and it's all good'

i like them, and i like their recent albums, but i don't want to define rock and roll too narrowly i was doing that for awhile but its less fun
though i do like that the male character from their last album shares my real name
but like... MGMT's 'Kids' is a great song, and captures the invincibility that makes the pretty hipster kids so annoying but also so compelling
Gallows are deeply bitter and cynical and live the lead singer spends half the time forming the crowd into elaborate moshes, but they're one of the most vital rock bands out now
i have no idea what the fuck Mars Volta are on about lyrically but they've got the technical skills to make up for it
even Nickleback bring people together
etc

I don't get all of the Nickelback HATE. I mean, they're certainly not one of my favorite artists, but they're not absolute shit.
I have one of their albums, and it helped me get into rock seeing it was one of the first albums I'd ever listened to. But I wouldn't consider buying a second.

my hate with nickleback is how much they have sold out. im sorry but when a band writes a song about selling out and conforming, thats the biggest sign they have sold out. i love nicleback pre 05. after 05, they just seemed to have changed. this is the way i feel.

They're probably stretching it out. Sounds like they have two a day. I hope THS at least beats Nickelback. We're up, but the gap has closed 4% since I voted.

I just visited the official Nickelback boards to see what they're like. For being such a big band, their boards sure are quiet, and sort of depressing. Then again, our board probably looks sad to a Nickelback fan. "Why do they all have such nerdy shoes?"

i reckon smaller bands have a tighter fan community i got into The White Stripes in a big way around the same time everybody else did (still love them) and figured there was no point in connecting with other fans 'cause they were so popular. what would you really have in common with the rest of them? that said White Stripes fans are probably alot more dedicated then Nickelback fans (i wrote fanfiction once...)

Panic! beat Green Day? 30 SECONDS TO MARS beat MODEST MOUSE? WTF??? OWL CITY BEAT GASLIGHT ANTHEM? NOOOOOOOOOO! THE DIMESTORE SAINTS HAVE FAILED! MGMT beat Arcade Fire? WTF?

it's only the first bracket. after we beat the guy from Fall Out Boy who's somehow more popular then Pete Wentz we still have to beat, um, a bunch of crappy bands and a few good ones
GO HOLD STEADY!

You guys are mad about a series of polls on MTV.com. Take a step back. i'm kinda exaggerating and kinda pissed off but still, it does prove how awesome The Unified Scene is! we beat Nickleback! and those Dimestore Saints couldn't even beat a bunch of Postal Service wannabes. We're number one!
