I don't care for Chillout Tent and Yeah Sapphire. Navy Sheets & Magazines get a real thin pass as well. Jesus the lyrics in Magazines are simplistic and terrible. The lyrics in Magazines are honest as hell. Jesus who doesn't know this feeling "When she storms out of the restroom, i think you're supposed to chase her to the lights" Or " I know you're pretty pissed, I hope you still let me kiss you."

I understand what you mean on the lyrics regarding "Magazines" but I think the way he sings it gives it a free pass in my book. The conviction in those words that make me relive those similar situations, etc.

I'm getting a little uncomfortable with the pick Don't Let Me Explode. Ok, the rocking part barely lasts 30 seconds. But those 30 seconds I consider rock history. Seconded. The song is a slow burn to that eargasmic 30 sec. It may be one of my favorites, actually.

Cheyenne Sunrise Navy Sheets (sometimes) Chillout Tent Chillout Tent is another one of my least favorites. Fun story: it was the first THS song I had ever heard (on The Current back when BAGIA came out), and I HATED it. So, I thought I hated THS for a dark, tortured portion of my life. I came to see the light when a friend pushed Stuck Between Stations on me, and I was hooked. I think the repellent thing about Chillout Tent is the contributing boy/girl voices. They are just too saccharine for me. Though, the song has grown on me considerably since my flawed first listen.

I love chill out tent, its the one THS song that my wife can listen to and not just shrug at... plus any song with Dave Pirner on is ok by me

I love chill out tent, its the one THS song that my wife can listen to and not just shrug at... plus any song with Dave Pirner on is ok by me So many good lines in that song "He was rough around the edges, he'd been to school but never finished, he'd been to jail but never prison." "It was kind of sexy but it was kind of creepy" The two voices are almost intentionally sweet. It's this great contrast between the singers and the content. It's a classic, corny love story, but a hoodrat version, a Hold Steady version.

i've said it before, but chillout tent contains one of my favourite finn lines ever:
"she looked just like a baby bird all new and wet and trying to light a parliament..."
i know at least ONE person on this board agrees with this, this person better raise their hand for a high five right about now.
as for a least favourite song; we had this discussion at mike's house and i sat for ages considering it. i decided that i didn't really have one and if i do, it wasn't something that i'd ever thought about or something that became apparent when i went through the back catalogue in my mind.
it's all opinion, so i can disagree but it won't make any difference. i'll leave you to it.

That line is amazing. I guess I'm a sucker for songs like chillout tent. I also have always loved "Always a Bridesmaid" by The Good Life, which is definitely different but another one of those siingle-song love stories with a twist. "Maybe it's the whiskey sours, but I think this might be it, if you ask me here and now, I think, no I know, I could make those wedding vows." On a totally different tangent, I'd recommend "Album of the Year" by The Good Life to everyone. One of my favorite cds. Album starts off with the line "The first time that I met her I was throwing up in a ladies' room stall."

So this is my first post - and can't believe it's negative but for me if i'm not in the mood i'll skip Same Kooks and Cutters.
Right going to find a thread where i can have a sycophantic hold steady spluge to make up for that....

Southtown Girls... You could drive a van between those harmonies. Hahahahahahaha. Completely true, even though I do like the song. It's "Chillout Tent" that gives me the prickles. I just can't get into it. Also, come on everyone - you're allowed to love a band but hate a few songs of theirs!

Cutters, because for me, it does not feel like it belongs, the opening to Southtown Girls reminds me of some awful late Seventies A.O.R. and Magazines for the "backing" vocals (in fact that it is a minor criticism of a lot of the album) but my current most least favourite is Chips Ahoy. Probably the woah woahs again.
The worst still kick the shite out of most of what is around today though !

I suppose my least favorite would be Both Crosses. I can't truly dislike a song that uses the word "transverberate", though. I'm just not in the mood to listen to it very often.

I must say that "first Night" and "Chillout Tent" are not my favs but they are the songs that I first play my girlfriends. I usually get a good response from these songs so then I can push the rest. Chillout tent reminds us of silly days at festivals where this could have happened.
Least favs; Both Crosses Navy sheets

There are very few songs I don't like on some level. But there are off course some who don't appeal the way most of them do.
I used to think less of a few of the AKM tracks, but it has grown tremendously on the during the past couple of years. Sweet Payne has gone from one of the more boring songs to become one of my all time favorites, and Hostile, Mass is going through the same process. Knuckles is simple, but has got a lot of charm. I still think Sketchy Metal are a bit of a low, though.
Separation Sunday is more or less perfect. I think it's wrong to look upon Don't Let Me Explode and Crucifixion Cruise as songs the same way as the other tracks on the album. Isolated they don't have the same massive feel as the rest of the songs, but they work perfectly in an album setting. And Separation Sunday is an Album - with capital A.
Boys And Girls was my first meeting with THS, and I used to love everything on it. Today, I think songs like Chillout Tent and Southtown Girls are a little bit weaker than the rest. They're good, but not perfect. I also have minor issues with Same Kooks. It's a great song, but by the time it appears on the album, the tempo and massive sound starts to feel a bit tiring. First Night is kind of a relief. But live, and as a song and not part of the album, Same Kooks rocks.
Stay Positive is a bit more uneven. Allthough Navy Sheets have grown on me, I still regard it as one of the weakest album tracks overall. Magazines is also a little bit boring, and Joke About Jamaica lacks some charm - or something like that. Both Crosses are in many ways a great song, but I think it sounds a bit misplaced on a THS record. It would be wrong to call it weak, though. Discouraged has also it's things. It's a bit to big and over the top. But I like the melody, the lyrics and the twist near the end. It's just at bit too much Richie Sambora, and I've never been a THS fan because of the guitar solos.
When it comes to b-sides and bonus tracks, I just don't expect the same from them as from the album tracks. But a few of them are on par with the ones mentioned above. It could also be because I generally haven't listened that much to them, and that they're not presented in an album as an whole.
Still, I must say that if we lay a 10 point rating system to ground, only Sketchy Metal, Navy Sheets and Magazines will rate 6/10 or lower. The rest of the production is 7/10 or above. That is quite extraordinary to me.
