There's gonna come a time when the band begin work proper on that Fifth album. I have no doubt it will be one of the best records of 2010 (please, no longer that that).
But what do we think it'll be like?
An even more varied affair than Stay Positive? A Hard rocking guitar blow out? A double album? A Concept album with new characters? A Keyboard heavy move into a synthy direction?
Look at this thread as the time capsule were going to bury under Nick Cage's kids School. And your posts as the contents. Once we have a copy of '33 Forever' (Free Dr Pepper for every US member if it's called that) we can look back and see how right/wrong we were.
Personally I think we'll have an epic track on the next album. A six minute plus piano led show stopper where the whole band gets to show off. And special guests on a couple of tracks. And a really good sleeve.

I just hope that they dont rely on string sections like with "Spectres". Its hard to predict without hearing a couple of songs intended for the album.

Last time I was with Dot Info. I had a theory that the Holly, Gideon and Charlemange story line is now dead.

I agree, Holly and Co may need a swan song however. I too don't want strings all over the next record. Too obvious. I think a spiky keyboard (As heard in Navy Sheets) sound is quite probable... And I'm dreading that.
I think the sound will be less E Street more The Band... Perhaps.
I'd like more two and a half minute punk rock belters too. But that may be a step backwards after Stay Positive and Constructive Summer.

I predict that Peter Hess, the horns guy, will be added permanently, just like Franz was. You heard it here first.

I see them getting a couple of guests on the album, another boy/girl duet a la Chillout Tent (maybe with Alison Mosshart outta the Kills) There's going to be some "dark" songs. A couple of acoustic ones. One where they try to experiment with electro that sounds god awful. And the rest will feature killer licks like in 40 Bucks. There will also be one song over 8 minutes long.

while holly and charlemagne are probably out, i predict something that holds together a little more than stay positive. probably less punk rock blowout. (maybe one song, please?) more layered instrumentation. it will rock.
and yes on the special guests. hess, obv. but who else? a bruce appearance? a little shred-off with mike cooley? some female vocals from annie st. clark? what do you want to see?
oh, and i want to see them take j roddy walston & the business along with them on tour.

All Jimmy Buffett covers, at least 20 tracks, completely recyclable sleeve.

Its impossible to predict what the album will sound like. I just hope they don't scrap some obscurity for accessibility.

im thinkin a more poppy direction like 40 bucks, Girls like status, that sort of thing. Also, im gonna go with it and say they will come back to the Holly, Gideon etc storyline, cos this will make me happy. They need a proper exit.
Or on the flipside, they may come back with loads of Brucie style big ballads, this sadly seems more likely.
im just hoping they will realise that the 'Navy Sheets' sound is horrible

"Navy Sheets" is sick, what's with all the hate there? All I find wrong about it is the chorus.
And I just hope John Darnielle will make a guest apperance, I'm sick of waiting.

If we're turning this into a "Who would you like to see guest on a THS song" thread, put me down for a Paddy Costello and a Paul Westerberg.

I'm betting that this album, whatever it entails, will be released on a label that isn't Vagrant. Also, it will be better than Stay Positive.

Also very few Vagrant owned acts have official sheet music/ guitar tab available (though this mayve a coincedental, unrelated matter).

REAL MEN WORK IT OUT BY EAR I'm kinda hurt by that: I have hand-eye co-ordination problems so have problems taking what I hear and translate it to the fretboard. I only figured out the intro to stuck between stations by cheating and looking online. I took about 2 months to get a grasp of the intro to You can... The only ones I've worked out without help is Navy Sheets, Hostile Mass and Constuctive Summer.
