"Police on My Back" by the Clash is just about the finest cover song I've ever heard.

Skip ahead to 2:35, or watch the whole thing because it's just as great. I know there are videos of just the cover, but the quality on this is better.

Got a bit of history to it, too. Never knew that the Griz had covered it, so I suppose I'll need to consult Youtube...

The Ramones - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" (Tom Waits) The Clash - "Wrong 'Em Boyo" (The Rulers - I think, my Trojan Ska Box Set isn't quite to hand) Bouncing Souls - "Born To Lose" (Johnny Cash) Absolutely everything on both Mermaid Avenue albums by Billy Bragg and Wilco (Guthrie)

Absolutely everything on both Mermaid Avenue albums by Billy Bragg and Wilco (Guthrie) So I have two questions: 1) If they wrote the music but not the lyrics (BB&W's Mermaid Avenue songs), is it a cover? 2) If a jazz musician plays a "standard", is that also a cover?

I don't think standards count as covers. Also, we don't have recordings of Woody actually playing any of the songs from Mermaid Avenue- Bragg and Wilco actually had to write new melodies and arrangements for that material. "Wrong 'Em Boyo" isn't just a cover; it's part of one of the longest traditions in American music. It's an interpolation of "Stagger Lee," a song that may date back to the 1890s and has been performed in pretty much every pop music idiom. Check out this site, which features a list of virtually every version of "Stagger Lee" out there.

Just some of my favorites... Pixies -- "Winterlong" Posies -- "I am the Cosmos" Johnny Cash -- "The Mercy Seat" White Stripes -- "Jolene" Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit -- "Into the Mystic" (although they did a great version of "Jailbreak" to close the night when I saw them) The Gourds -- "Gin and Juice" Ryan Adams -- "Wonderwall" Sonic Youth -- "Superstar" Mavericks -- "Hot Burrito #1" Gary Jules -- "Mad World" Husker Du -"Eight Miles High" This Mortal Coil -- "you and Your Sister" Hindu Love Gods -- "Raspberry Beret" Cheap Trick -- "California Man" My Bloody Valentine -- "We Have All The Time in the World" Pearl Jam -- "Rockin' In the Free World" Sinead O'Connor -- "Nothing Compares 2 U" George Harrison -- "If Not For You" Rod Stewart -- "Reason to Believe"

BUT, Devo covered Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones and their version is almost entirely different, musically. Is that a cover? Interesting.

Nick Cave's is my favourite, although his spin on it says more about him than anyone in the story Other favourite covers: Johnny Cash - Heart of Gold (also, just about anything on disc two of Unearthed) Manic Street Preachers - Working Class Hero (Lennon) Dead Kennedys - Viva Las Vegas Tom Waits - Goodnight Irene (Ledbelly)
