Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower - Even Dylan prefers the cover. But of course. My criterion for a great cover is "has this band/performer made this song their own", so Jimi wins with that one. Along the same lines, some more of my favorite covers: Devo: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction The (English) Beat: Tears of a Clown Elbow: Independent Women, part 1 Anthrax: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Aretha Franklin: Eleanor Rigby The Beatles: Twist and Shout Billy Bragg: Jeanne (The Smiths) Napalm Death: Nazi Punks Fuck Off (Dead Kennedys; actually, the Virus 100 collection has a ton of great DK covers) Black Flag: Louie Louie Fishbone: Freddie's Dead (Curtis Mayfield) Uncle Tupelo: Effigy (Creedence Clearwater Revival) Faith No More: Easy (Lionel Richie) Jawbox: Cornflake Girl The Clash: Brand New Cadillac (a cover so good, you don't even realize it's a cover!) Johnny Cash: Hurt Flaming Lips: Can't Get You Out of My Head J Church: Planet Earth (Duran Duran) ...and I could keep going... ...but I can't stop without my all-time favorite, already referenced in the "Worst Covers" thread: Jeff Buckley: Hallelujah

I love Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah too.
I also love David Bowie's Cactus. I do like the Pixies' original, but Bowie makes it all sexy-like, the way he does.

anything elbow and THS have ever covered ever (not together, if that happened i'd cry). the national's cover of 'mansion on the hill' by springsteen. the clash's cover of 'brand new cadillac'. jeff buckley doing 'hallelujah'. nick cave doing pulp's 'disco 2000'.
oh my, there are tonnes more. i'll come back when i have thought of them.

The eels are great at covers.
I like unexpected and weird covers where you can't really tell if it's 'good'.
Paolo Nutini - "Rehab" Katie Melua - "Just Like Heaven" Arctic Monkeys - "You Know I'm No Good" Nelly Furtado - "Crazy" Rock Plaza Central - "SexyBack"
I'm a cover addict, actually.

No one going for what is surely the greatest cover ever? Aretha's version of Respect. Remember, Otis recorded it first.

I guess its technically still a cover even if hardly anyone ever heard the original. I that vein, Afghan Whigs' "Mr. Superlove" (by the very stupidly named Ass Ponys) is one of my all-time favorites.

China Drum - Wuthering Heights The Afghan Whigs - Lost In The Supermarket Goo Goo Dolls - Never Take The Place Of Your Man Foo Fighters - Baker Street Heartily agreed, though I think Foo Fighters do a better "Darling Nikki" than "Baker Street." China Drum is one of those amazing bands that just kind of vanished, too. Also... Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen) The Black Crowes, "Hard To Handle" (Otis Redding) The Replacements, "September Gurls" (Big Star) Coheed & Cambria, "Sister Christian" (Night Ranger) Ted Leo, "Since U Been Gone" (Kelly Clarkson) Thin Lizzy, "Rosalie" (Bob Seger) City On Film, "Come On Eileen" (Dexy's Midnight Runners) Deadsy, "Brand New Love" (Sebadoh)
