What the frick is with the snow?! Aaaah! Well, it's quite pretty. BUT my boots leak. I really need to buy some new ones. It is also just weird because I cannot remember a time we had so much snow in December before...

I live to close to sea level for real snow but the highlands will no doubt be caked in it.

i'm sure this will be me soon enough. the only time it's REALLY snowed up here in the forgotten corner of New York state was when all the poor college kids (myself included) had to drive home and back for/from thanksgiving. saw about 10 cars of helpless college kids off the road and the roads were too spotty to even pull over and help.
but, for now, fingers crossed, we've got no snow. maybe we'll last til winter break (in exactly 2 weeks!) but, with lows in the 10F's any precip and we're toast...

Um, yeah, we need at least 7 inches of snow to call a snow day here in Minnesota. Or have blizzard conditions or dangerous cold. (Dangerous cold is when any exposed skin could freeze in one minute.)
And yes, we think you all are wimps. Except all those people that get the lake effect snow, they are just unlucky. And good at shoveling.
I LOVE winter. Here's to hoping for 6 foot snowdrifts and white-out conditions!

XO WD It's England, thats what they do. "Oooh, it's snowing ever so slightly it's complete chaos" Earlier this year, a council shut a school 'cos the plaground was icy. England is H&S obseesed, they banned fucking conkers.

I was in DC several years ago for a school trip. One night weather forecasters were predicting up to an inch of snow the next morning. Lots of schools were closed that night. For the next day. Cause they MIGHT get maybe an inch of snow. Wimps.

If they didn't ban conkers, then they forced kids to wear science goggles in casethey got hit in the eye. "Conkers is a game traditionally played by children in Britain, the Republic of Ireland and some former British colonies using the nuts of horse-chestnut trees – the name conker is also applied to the nut and to the tree itself. The game is played by two players, each with a conker threaded onto a piece of string: they take turns to strike each other's conker until one breaks."

Yep, as Han says, Britain and "extreme" conditions are non-mixy things. Basically, we have mild weather all year round (by which I mean no extremes of hot or cold, rather than that it's nice;)). It rains a lot but it rarely snows; we aren't at risk of natural disasters except occasional flooding. So any seasonally unusual conditions cause chaos - particularly in winter, because people don't have cars that are prepared to deal with snow, and our very heavily congested roads (what happens when 70 million people live in a small space) go nuts. Woot!

Cause they MIGHT get maybe an inch of snow. Wimps. The first time I saw THS (Baltimore, 15 February 2003), this happened: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_blizzard_of_2003Biggest snowstorm in Baltimore history. I was stuck there for 3 days! I couldn't stop marveling at how absolutely paralyzed everything was. Milwaukee got 100 inches of snow last winter.

We never had a snow day unless we had 7+ inches overnight. Unless it's an inch an hour or more, there was no chance.

I wish the UK got more snow. We had a snow today today, off school and the like. It rained at about 9am and washed it all away. Apparently schools aren't allowed to clear the snow because if they do and it melts and turns into water and the water freezes overnight and causes ice and then somebody slips on it it's the fault of whoever cleared the snow*.
Chaos is guaranteed in the UK - breezes above 10mph are "gale force", a half-inch of hail is "heavy snow", anything above 12C is a "heatwave", anything below 12C is a "cold snap". Christ, what a nation of utter fannies. It really really annoys me, my local bank has shut two hours early because of "snow", so when I arrived at 3pm having walked 3 miles to it to cash my paycheque (that is not only late but should have been paid directly into my account) to find the bank closed I wasn't best pleased. Snow. Just deal with it!
*I might have made that up.

2 INCHES AND SCHOOL'S SHUT DOWN!?!!?!?
We had 14 inches of snow ON TOP of whatever we already had and they didn't even call school off! Most of the students we absent though, they even were closing business! The next day it wasn't half as bad, but school was closed.
