I think he was more bound by things of this world when he went electric and started singing mostly about women. Before that dude was off this planet.
My favorite Dylan song is It's Alright Ma'. The depth in that song is amazing, you could get lost in there for weeks.

song is ridiculous.
and 'blowing in the wind' isn't bound by that movement. it's timeless.

I think he was more bound by things of this world when he went electric and started singing mostly about women. Before that dude was off this planet. um...metaphors. my interpretation is that those songs ostensibly about women are really about the folk scene and about other issues. i mean, he did love the blues, and i tend to think that the women in blues songs signify a lot more than just a seemingly unjust romantic relationship.

You make a decent point. I dont really want to argue about Dylan too much. I love his folk albums and the electric ones. I haven't listened to much past that other than blood on the tracks and the live albums.
I have a theory that maybe you can grow old with Dylan, each of his records meaning something too you, when you are at the age that he was when he wrote it. It is possibly just total bolox. If it is to hold true I will become very fond of John Wesley Harding this September. Fingers crossed.

highway 61 revisited is so lyrically deep. but about the women thing. i believe some of the songs were about a lady who got caught up in the wrong crowd (andy warhol) and got involved in heroin, a holly of sorts. and dylan didn't take to kindly to that.

i grew up with Dylan... my point is that he's got such a huge discography that there will be things people dislike. i think most of here consider ourselves Dylan fans but we could still kill an enjoyable afternoon arguing about tracks/live shows/books of his we dislike. dosen't mean we hate Dylan... it just means that he's done things we dislike right now THS has 4 albums, so there's less room for that reaction. if they'd been going for 10 or 15 years it would be assumed that even the biggest fans would have stuff they didn't like

one other interesting point about Dylan - in a streetpress interview Craig Finn talked about basing his style on Tangled Up In blue - the multiple viewpoints, the changing the songs live. i noticed that with THS and Dylan live - they'll both change crucial bits of songs to switch around the meaning i didn't notice it until Craig said it but its obvious in hindsight

blowin in the wind to me is about freedom, it's an ageless concept.
