The question is which is my favourite, and mine is BAGIA. But hell, I'm one of the new kids who loves The Hold Steady for the singalong numbers i really don't know why you find a problem with anyone saying that. it's one of the stark contrasts between the first 2 and last 2 albums. What problem do I have with saying what? I said I like the singalong stuff. I commit the slight THS blasphemy of being more into the singy stuff than the talky stuff... I'm not sure what you think I was saying about anyone else.

Haha! I taught on witchcraft last week. Perhaps I should have put myself forward as an example.

Almost Killed Me. After listening to it the first few times I was distinctly underwhelmed and I thought that it sounded shallow and throwaway. It grew on me so much though, and I think it is the Hold Steady album with the most depth, and as a result is the most rewarding listen. As others have said, the album is bookended by two of the very best Hold Steady songs. It's held together by some musically messy, lyrically brilliant anger that on the one hand is crying out for some structure, but on the other hand revels in its own confusion.
Separation Sunday is growing on me a fair bit though. Boys and Girls in America was the album that got me into them, and it has some good pop songs on, but it's just a bit too straightforward for me. It's the album I would give a friend if I wanted to get them into the band.
Stay Positive sounds a bit overproduced for me.
Oh yeah, I'm new. Hi.

hello! im new and so thought this a good place to start!
i chose BAGIA simply cos it has my favourite THS song on it, First Night. but i recon i rate the first 3 albums equally.
as much as i loved SP, i dont relate to it the same way i do to the other albums. where the first 3 albums have helped me through alot of things and changed me, SP is just a decent rock album.
saying that slapped actress and ask her for adderal truly are kick-arse songs

welcome, cal!
BAGIA seems to be the hook for a lot of people, no matter where they end up. it was a live show on the BAGIA tour that really converted me, for all that i already loved separation sunday

I think Boys and Girls in America has the right mix of anthems with the right mix of pop hooks with the right mix of immediacy that you just don't get on the other albums. Not to mention that Stuck Between Stations is such a mission statement that it's hard not to get sucked in.

cheers for the welcome! you super nice people you!
and yeah i got into the hold steady when i saw them play an all BAGIA set at the latitude festival a couple years back, which did suit pretty nicely. It was big and anthemic enough to convert everyone who saw them at the time, but it still felt really intimate.. oh the joy that is the hold steady

This is like a confusion vortex. Let me add to the confusion. Huh? so it's not just me! polly, i honestly don't understand what you're trying to tell me and how it ties in to my post. was it sarcasm? yours, confused and frustrated, leeds. xo Ah, sorry, I was out of this thread - I was just ribbing you, sorry - I love how you're willing to say and strongly. As in, Stone Roses are crap. Also, it has not escaped my notice that while SP has risen to 4 votes, I'm still the only one willing to say it openly.

Highlight of the whole weekend for me. I remember looking round at the crowd and everybody was leaping about with big grins on their faces. I listened to BAGIA on repeat for the rest of the weekend and it still reminds of that summer. I've always said that SS is my favourite in previous polls just because it had such a huge impact on me when I first heard it but have been revisiting AKM a lot recently and with the exception of a couple of tracks just love SP.

BAGIA started it. SS sealed it.

SS. That might be a sentimental choice because it was the one that introduced me to THS.
Or maybe its just a friggen perfect album!
Either way.

Separation Sunday is the most faith-affirming and comforting. Really resonant for various reasons...

I really love all the records. The Hold Steady is probably one of the only bands that have released four consecutively great records. Separation Sunday, though, is definitely the one that got me into them and is the best balanced. The lyrical content builds on the foundation Almost Killed Me laid down, and enhances it with new elements. I have not officially decided, but I'm pretty sure Almost Killed Me or Stay Positive are my next choices. AKM feels a little too much like a bunch of songs together (unlike Separation Sunday, which was also one of the main improvements) and doesn't have quite that story telling element that other THS albums have.
Oh well.

The favorite albums has been done & not very long ago either. How about a favorite song from each record poll ?

How about a favorite song from each record poll ? that sounds painful. i don't think my brain can take the strain of thinking about that.
