Thought I'd throw this into the forums to spark some discussion.
Which is your favourite, and why?

sometimes separation sunday, sometimes stay positive. depends on the day of the week, the hour of the day, the alignment of the stars, the way the sun strikes my eyes in the morning, and a little hocus-pocus. of course, "separation" is always spelled correctly in my analysis.

I've gotta go with "Separation Sunday". I saw the band twice on the SS tour and credit that record for my current love of the band. My "Damn Right You'll Rise Again Tour 2005" T-Shirt is faded beyond belief.

Everyone always goes for Separation Sunday, but I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Positive Jam & Killer Parties are the alpha & the omega of the Hold Steady for me. It's messy and it lacks structure and I hate Sweet Payne, but though I love Separation, for pure unadulterated affection I gotta go with Almost Killed Me all the way.

Boys and Girls in America. Hands down. No record has had such a ridiculous impact on my life. Certain things wouldn't have happened if I hadn't heard that record. Living proof that rock and roll means well.

It has to be Sep Sunday for me. The stories on that album feel like my life. I love the promise of redemption.

Boys And Girls In America takes the cake, but I will say that the drunken, pissed off ramblings of Finn in Almost Killed Me have become the soundtrack to my past couple of weeks.
I also do not like "Sketchy Metal" or "Sweet Payne (really just the beginning of the song)". Or "Knuckles". Am I a bad Hold Steady fan? There seems to be such great allegiance to that album. It's fun that's for sure, but compared to the others this album -- as a whole -- it is not nearly as good.
As for Separation Sunday I have to be in the mood to listen to it from front to back because I see it more as a book than an actual record.
Just one man's opinion.

My faves are a mix of Separation Sunday and Stay Positive with bagia coming in very close second. AKM is my *least* favourite, but it's still an exceptional album. In my opinion, the band keeps going from strength to strength with every record; they just keep getting better.

I love them all dearly, but it's hands down SS. The first time I listened to it, I was a little creeped out because the story more or less reflected my life at the time. I haven't been able to turn back since.

SS is just an amazing album. All the songs work so well together and flows great. The other albums are great too, but don't flow the same way SS does

I can't choose. If I did I would just change my mind and choose another one, then another one etc. They are all good albums and I'm not just being a dumb-ass fan, they just are!

Definitely Boys and Girls In America for me. I love them all, but BAGIA was not only my first introduction to THS, but it was the first new music that truly energized me in a long time when I heard it.

I'm going to say Separation Sunday is their best album . Boys and Girls in America probably have the best songs overall. But as a complete album, Separation Sunday is a masterpiece. Craig was so ambitious with that record lyrically, and the fact that he succeded immensely makes it that much more amazing. Also it was my introduction to the Hold Steady in December of '05, so that makes it that much more special for me. Next I'd go with Stay Positive, and then Almost Killed Me.

Anyone who votes BaGiA just does not see the Hold Steady the same way I do.
