I hope they play more shows, I would really like it if they played some unofficial events.

I've never been to sxsw...how does all that work? hellloooo Hello! I've never been, but from what I have seen you get your badge a.k.a ticket which will let you into events. I guess some events may be VIP only or some crap that prevents just anyone with a badge from walking in. Maybe one year I'll head down, but its too rich for my blood now

I've never been to sxsw...how does all that work? You can buy a badge, or you could cop out and just go to all the free shows you can handle.

When I went, I had a badge and it was definitely worth it--without it, I would have never seen Vanilla Ice, and therefore, would have died relatively unfulfilled. It's expensive and a really good investment, but it depends on where the bands you want to see are playing. You can still have a good time without one.
I haven't been since 2005, but is bands playing multiple shows (especially -four-!) common now? I can't remember anyone playing more than two, max.

It's very common for bands to play multiple shows. I've heard some stories of some bands playing like 4 shows in one day (in 4 different venues)!

Yeah, I think people are sick of it being a corporate event and decided to start playing more shows. A lot of bands play not only official events, but free unofficial as well.

there used to be (and probably still is) a giant Torrent file with one track from every SXSW artist... i've got so much great random music from those thing gotta cheer for the aussie delegation... we've got some good bands going, including local noise guys Naked on the Vague! its amazing that they play tiny werehouse shows and now they're going to SXSW

This is the same week as my spring break this year (the real spring break, not the one I'm creating in order to go to a bunch of shows) but those badges are waaay more than I can afford. Too bad.

get a wristband. you can get into the showcases, just not all the parties (some you can still rsvp for). plenty of free shows on top of that too!

A quick plug: if anyone goes, be sure to check out my friends in Crocodile. Derek, Raechel, and DW are good folks and they've got a rad band (if you like stuff a little synth-y.) Plus, Derek rocks a Gibson Marauder every now and then, which is pretty awesome.

Wristbands, from what I learned last year, can be a real bitch to get if you don't live in Austin. Do you know of some way that we out of towners can score one?

i used to work there, and though it's been a few years if you don't want to be dissapointed you should get the badge, at any show with a line the badges get preference and so if it's a highly anticipated show and a smallish venue the wristband could have you s.o.l.
