Hello All, I've been a THS fan since Boys & Girls in America. I just joined the board to make this post to see if anyone else had seen this recently released song that is a blatant ripoff of Sequestered in Memphis. I was listening to my Discover Weekly on Spotify, and this song came on. . . . www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EsmzuFd1t0It is obviously a copy of SIM, with terrible lyrics. I posted a comment on the youtube video asking if THS got a writing credit. They deleted my comment. It can't be a coincidence. I did a search in the message boards, and didn't find anything related to this. Any chance the band already knows and doesn't care/doesn't think it's worth their time? I just hope they are aware. Thoughts?

That's wild. And also a blatant (and poorly done) ripoff. Gross.

Wow.
The comments all seem a bit suspect too :
"Every note feels like a brushstroke on a canvas of emotions. 🎨🎼" "I've officially declared this my anthem. Who's with me? 🏴☠️🎶" "Feeling a deep connection with the lyrics. Music speaks where words fail. 🎤💬" "The beats are contagious – can't help but dance every time it plays! 💃🕺" "This track is the perfect remedy for a hectic day. Pure sonic therapy! 🎶💆♂️" "This song is a time machine, taking me back to some amazing memories. ⏳❤️" "Just added this to my 'Late Night Vibes' playlist. Perfect chill-out tune! 🌙🎵"
They have 8 subscribers to their account, but 42 very similarly formatted comments on this one video. Absolutely no way those aren't purchased bot responses.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. We need to add more honest comments. I would, but they blocked me.

This is hilarious. The video, the lyrics. It must be AI, right? Right?

Would AI delete comments from youtube calling them out for plagiarism? But you are right. It all seems too bad to be real.
The band also has a FB page. They are playing tomorrow night.

Egregious plagiarism.

The band also has a FB page. They are playing tomorrow night. Yeah, I did not mean to argue against the blatant plagiarism nor the questionable Youtube activities. But the lyrics had me laughing out loud. "Like he knows what a strategy is.."

I did reply to the “amazing memories” comment saying “like watching The Hold Steady in 2008?” and they haven’t blocked me yet.

It must already be blocked. I can't see it. The way they block is that the author of comments can still see them, but no one else does. I see all of my comments, but when I use a different account, they are gone.

My favorite comment is:
"Feeling a deep connection with the lyrics. Music speaks where words fail. 🎤💬"
They say they love the lyrics, then imply that the words fail.

Jesus. Sad to see the song has nearly 50k streams on spotify. Yeah, THS should have a claim on all $38.42 they earn from those streams.

Jesus. Sad to see the song has nearly 50k streams on spotify. Mostly (or all) bots. Guaranteed. Their next related music video ‘Charlie Watts’ has under 100 views and has been up for three months. They’ve obviously paid for a bunch of views and comments from a bot farm. There are a bunch of services that advertise that sort of thing. But all they do is use fake accounts to jack up views.

I read somewhere recently that Spotify is monitoring stream counts for false inflation by fake accounts. They will withhold revenue on songs that have been falsely inflated. (Not that the revenue would be that much) I hope it's true.

I'm incredibly sceptical that this is a real band - at least in the sense we'd think of it. And I'm very bored at work so I think I'll be spending the next day or two Googling to find out more.
The one thing I've found to lend any credibility to them being real is an interview from an old HTML site called In Music We Trust - which if it is real, puts them in an awkward spot with the plagiarism angle as their answers to the very first question - "What are some of your musical influences?" mentions bands that I struggle to believe musicians who are into them never heard of THS.
Foster (vocals): Elvis Costello, The Cars... Doug (guitar): Replacements, Husker Du...

I found a website that lists bands/songs that have been in movies and TV shows. This band (can't even type their name) is listed as having 2 songs on One Tree Hill in 2003. But those songs aren't in their Spotify catalog. You make an excellent point about their influences. Doug's two bands are both from the Cities.

The music is a clear THS ripoff. The lyrics sound like someone without wit or humor tried to copy a Fountains of Wayne song.

They have now removed all comments from their youtube video. Must have gotten enough pushback. Now to get them to take the video down!

I did some digging back when this was posted and again last night...
The entire album is up on soundcloud.
It looks like they must own the record label - no official website, but discogs lists 3 releases, all by this same band. I saw a CD on eBay.
Track 3 opens with "fell in love in the backseat / of a big yellow taxi"; in addition the music is a complete ripoff of Radiohead's "Creep". I had to stop.
Release date is March 1, 2024.
So anyway...

Nice detective work Ansible! I wonder which song rips off the Replacements, which one rips off Wilco, which one rips off Springsteen, . . . . The "Creep" ripoff is exactly the same chords, but different enough melody line that I'll give them that one. There are only so many chord progressions. The thing that bothers me is that the Sequestered ripoff isn't even subtle. They even copy the drum/vocal only chorus near the end.

If they’ve ripped off creep (I can’t listen I’ll get more annoyed.) then it might be they ripped off the song Radiohead ripped off for it. They had to give the hollies a writing credit for the air that I breathe.
There’s a part of me thinking some of this might be AI. The lyrics feel weird. I don’t know, the only thing that makes me think it’s not is that it’s such a blatant rip off.

It's almost exactly "California Stars"!
